iPhone 4s location wrong... Why?

My location on my 4s is completely out, it says I'm about 30 miles away from where I actually am. It does this 90% of the time! And I'm not sure what I can do to fix it. My iPad 2 and other family members iPhone 4 on the same wifi etc. doesn't have any prOblems with this.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5

Hi, I am in Paris and find half the questions I ask on the 4s get a reply" Sorry, I cant look for places in France" or along those lines...even when I ask "What is the best Bordaux?" or "what is a good restaurant in Paris" "Sorry, I cant look for restaurants in France," Why cant she? i.e. google that question and zip to an internet site? Would someone at apple kindliy explain what's up...and why you havent warned purchasers of the 4S in France about this limitation.

I hate to burst everyone's bubble. I did not read all 19 pages on this discussion and I don't know if there was similar conclusion... No matter how much I would love to blame it on Apple and iOS, the problem is caused by something else. Try google search without 'iPhone' and you'll see that android users are having the same problem...and they are blaming google (maps, services, ect.). If you look closer, you'll see that in all discussions wifi somehow figures out.

Now, I do have the same problem and it happens only when I visit my relatives in Serbia. There my phone is mainly on wifi and location is mainly showing China. Anywhere else in Europe, Africa, etc... if I stay off wifi my location is fine.

I said I would love to blame it on Apple, but in a way it is partly their problem to solve. The code in iOS is pointing iPhone's GPS to use wifi as a shortcut. It seems similar code is used for android OS. I'm sure that problem can be fixed in future OS updates... The question is when :-(

Anyway... It is all explained here

Apparently determination of precise location depends more on wifi provider (no matter if wifi is spoofed !?!?!) than on actual GPS. The excuse is that not all devices can obtain GPS signal (iPad wifi model, iPod...) and in some cases GPS signal from satelite is unavailable. The upside down logic is that is better having completely wrong and useless location than no location at all (when accurate one is not available). Well, let's be positive and hope that Apple programmers will stumble upon a same problem on their personal iDevices and decide to do something about it in the next update.

this worked for me on 4s

take sim out.. then

1.reset location warnings

2.reset network

3.reset all content and setting whilst it was wiping i inserted sim. iphone shut down i booted up,,, entered all the jargan

then on my pc "the home hub /router" hub manager page set the iphone a static ip address and place it outside the hub firewall. (DMZ) also changed the wirless channel

So i just got my new 4s upgrading from 3gs

and was having the same issue as everyone here, got a replacement 4s still same problem gps way out

so i tried my old 3gs again and gps was fine.

I posted this earlier, but I still think it explains this problem.

This may help to explain the problem".....

Crowd-sourced Wi-Fi and cellular Location Services

If Location Services is on, your device will periodically send the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple, to augment the crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations. In addition, if you are traveling (for example, in a car) and Location Services is on, a GPS-enabled iOS device will also periodically send GPS locations and travel speed information in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple, to be used for building up a crowd-sourced road traffic database. The crowd-sourced location data gathered by Apple does not personally identify you.

So if Apple made some mistakes with this system then this would account for the gross error locations, remember that my tests showed that the gps worked, but we mainly use the assisted gps system that includes the crowd sourced wi-fi and cellular location services.

This is also happening to me. I live in Raleigh, NC (USA) - AT&T - and for the past 2 weeks my phone has been telling me (and all my friends using the Friend Finder app to track me) that I'm in Kings Grant, NC - which is over 100 miles from me. Nothing I do seems to change that - reset network settings, hard reset, etc. Once in a while it'll correct itself and have a correct location, but for the vast majority of the time it's wrong. I have an iphone 4 - not the 4s. Hope a fix comes down the pipeline soon - this is really annoying.

ETeam -

I am also in Raleigh and experiencing the same issue. It just started within the last day or two. My location says that I am in Kings Grant. Ocassionally, it will say Wilmington. I have had the phone for a month or so and the issue has just arisen. My wife has an iphone 4 and I still have my old iphone 4. The location services on both of these phones operate perfectly.
