iPhone 4s: No sound keyboard, alerts, music without headphones

Anyone else out there with these same/similar issues:

  • No sound without ear buds or Bluetooth ONLY for
    • Alerts
    • Music
    • Videos
    • Keyboard Clicks
  • Lock Screen Not Locked, it changes or is blank

Brand new 4s, and there’s no sound with keyboard clicks, alerts, videos, or music without ear buds or Bluetooth headset. Ringer works, and Siri works, speaker phone works. And it does record my voice on the videos. I’ve done about six hard restarts, one restore, sprayed the plug where the ear buds plug in with canned air, and inserted and re-inserted the plug about fifty times as recommended on various threads so the phone doesn’t “think” ear buds are still plugged in.

I called Apple and they said because the ringer/speaker phone works but the alerts, music, clicks, don’t; it is most likely a software problem not hardware and they recommended a restore through iTunes.

I also took it to my local AT&T store (I bought it online through AT&T) and they were also stumped.

I did the “restore” and now my “lock” screen photo won’t stay in place even though when I check the “Wallpaper” setting’s it is still there, but does not show up when I unlock the phone unless I keep doing a hard restart.

Bottom line: Apple is saying to wait for a software upgrade in the next few weeks and if that doesn’t fix my issues I need to return the phone (which I’d rather not do) because it is guaranteed for a year…

This is my 5th iPhone (plus other 4 iPods) and NONE of the other Apple products had any issues. This is very disappointing. But I also waited about 3-6 months before purchasing them after a launch… maybe all the bugs were already resolved. So next time I will not rush to get one in the first 30 days…😟

Same thing for me. Tried that solution and still have the problem. Called 1800MYAPPLE and because my 90 day window is past will not help you without a fee ($69 or $29 depending on the option). Not paying to hear them tell me it's a bug! They know it's a bug, we all know. Guess I'll just go to an Apple store and let them replace it.

I thought my problem was my Lifeproof case: I thought my sound "on off" switch wasn't responding properly so I took that off. Of course it didn't help and I worry I'm compromising the water proof capability of the Lifecase by taking it off more than it's designed to be removed. Drives me nuts to not have keyboard clicks, even when fixing Siri's mistakes so I'm typing with noise cancelling headphones- freaky.

I'll try docking- once- maybe. No, I'm just going back to AT&T to get the phone replaced. I'm afraid if I do a temporary fix by docking the problem will just stretch out, will happen again and it will be harder to deal with. I just got the phone last week so I think it's easier to trade it out immediately and hope the next one doesn't have this problem. Luckily it's not a problem for me to get back to either AT&T or the Apple store because they're quite close to me and they're very close to each other. I'm sorry for all of you who aren't close to a store and have this problem on your hands.

Cleaning the docking port seems to have resolved the issue for me. I'd tried resetting, rebooting, restoring, etc, and even had cleaned the headset jack, but for some reason I didn't think to clean the docking port.

I pulled out a year and a half worth of pocket lint and now the sounds seem to work all the time. Keeping my fingers crossed this was the issue, thanks bigboibryan for pointing me in the right direction, this was driving me nuts.

Same thing happened me last week and I spent many hours over a few days restoring, updating, messing with settings and even tried plugging in and out headphones many times but nothing worked.

However, a blast of COMPRESSED AIR into the headphone jack and it was fixed immediately!

I'm absolutely amazed at how gimmicky the iphone can be!!!!! Was very frustrating to say the least....

Don't know if this helps but had problem for several days now but got it to clear. This is what I done: kept blowing into charging port and then went to settings/ sounds and switched off lock sounds and keyboard clicks and then exited. Switched off phone, restarted and went back to sounds and turned items back on. Don't know if just lucky but sound came back.

Good luck as done my head in.

My iphone has been doing this crazy sound stuff too! I don't get it because sometimes it will randomly make a noise when I get a text or email, and sometime it will even stop halfway through. Most of the time it just doesnt work though. Only works through headphones, unless I get a phone call. I don't even have a dock, just a charger so I don't see how it could get stuck on that. I do use my headphones regularly at the gym though. I have tried everything that all of these posts and forums suggest and nothing works for me. I guess that I will just have to make the long drive to the nearest Apple Store ( an hour and a half away) and wait for three hours for the genuis bar. Sigh...
