1st Gen Nano Recall Notification

Finally! I got notification from Apple this evening that they will be replacing my 1st gen nano. I had to verify serial number, but other than that they said they will send me packing materials and instructions to send it back and they will send me a replacement. They didn't say what they would replace it with (refurbish 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen...). Anyone have an inkling?

They are not making ANY 1Gs. I seriously doubt that the above poster will actually get one back, but if if does happen, it will be one that somnoen returned that they just replace the battery in. I still doubt it, though, since I talked to them on two separate occasions (speaking to three different people on ONE of those occasions) and the answer was that, no, they were not sending any refurbished units back out no matter how upset people were that they sent in a 1G expecting a 1G back.

cicerogirl they told it would be a new 1st gen nano. Apple is a huge company and any muilt billion dollar company always has there original products in there archives not for sale but to keep for sentimental purposes. this whole switcharoo they pulled on me really upset me and i just kepted pushing them for resolution i didn't actually think they would relent. i figured they would do what Corporate America does whatever they want and not care about who they hurt. this whole matter is not over yet for me but i'm trying to be hopeful. as i was saying well see what actually happens. i got my fingers crossed

Could you please list all the huge companies that keep "sentimental" products and how you officially know this?

So give me a range, do you think Apple keeps between say 1 and 10 sentimental models? And you, out of the millions of people who responded to this and get one?

My guess is they might keep one prototype (but not in all cases due to Apple's vaunted secrecy), one for any museum they maintain, and they might send one to the Smithsonian or other museums.

I suppose they could ask the Smithsonian to return theirs to send to you.

The 6G units they are now sending out are probably new since their stock of refurbished ones would have been depleted quite a while ago with so many people responding to the replacement program. NOT every huge company just retains old stock for "sentimental" purposes. As Deggie said, maybe a couple for historical purposes (and, yes, probably one to the Smithsonian), but I was very specifically told that the refurbished 1Gs that they had in stock we sent out first and were gone. Personally, I think the person you talked to was just tired of the ******** and told you what you wanted to hear to get you off the phone. (The next time you call you will be someone else's problem!) They also know that if they relent and somehow keep one of the returns, put a new battery in it and send it back to you, there will be LOTS of people (like me) who will call and ***** because we, too, were VERY upset and felt mislead... And we will complain that if they did it for you, they should do it for us as well! So I will be VERY surprised if you get one back. You can always do who I did and buy a couple of 1G units of eBay for about $50. It might also be eligible for the recall, of course (the first one I bought was, but the second one was not)... But at least you will have a 1G.

Received my replacement today. 5 weeks and 6 days after they received my 1st generation ipod nano. It is an 8gb refurbished sixth generation ipod nano with a 90 day warranty.

Am I happy? Absolutely. I sent a piece of equipment that was recalled because of a potential fire risk to me (tbh though I've not heard of this actually happening) that was starting to show signs of wear and tear and in its place a smaller (in size and ideal for running with), larger (in memory), easier to navigate when on the go item at no extra cost to me.

Yes the 1st generation ipod nano cost a significant amount of money at the time but is now worth a fraction of that amount (look at the effect on the cost of ipad 2 following the announcement of the new ipad). Electronic equipment rarely holds its value.

What were Apple to do then? Leave the 1st generation ipod owners with a potential fire risk at home or at a signifcant expense provide a more modern unit to the owners of them? ****** if they do, ****** if they don't.

Stevie306, or anyone else who knows, how do you tell if it's a "refurbished" 6th gen Nano? The 6th gen Nano I received looked brand new with plastic protective stickers on the front and back of the casing. Just curious to know how to tell a refurbished unit from a brand-new one. Also, happy to hear you received your iPod. 😀
