I can't send an sms/text from iphone 4S (iOS5.01)

I can't seem to send sms text messages to a specific VALID contact from my iPhone 4S (iOS 5.01). I get a "message send failure" indication.

I have inserted the full area code, and try everything listed from Apple Knowledge Base support.apple.com/kb/HT1337

I have also tried restoring my iPhone 4S, attempting to send an SMS from a fresh phone without restoring my back up and nothing seem to work?

Its definetly not an issue with my carrier, as I tried inserting my sim card onto my old iPhone 4 (iOS 5.01), and I am able to send the SMS.

Does anyone know what could be causing it? Is anyone having the same issue?

Please help. Thanks.

My version of he problem is this. I can of send SMS messages to only one contact and only when I am abroad. The problem is that contact is my wife!

I have an iPhone 5. Contacts were synced from iCloud from my old 3 gs. All numbers have the UK country code. I can send messages to all other contacts I have tried from abroad.

I can send a message when on wifi but not without. iMessage is on, data roaming is off. All his just used to work with my 3GS.

I mon t mobile in the uk if that is relevant.

Help?

I used this with the proviso that actually the phone was trying to use the wrong Service Center. It was an old UK O2 pay monthly phone that had been put on a pay as you go simm, after reading this the service center number that the phone was trying was +447802000332 I did the above but no luck, after a bit more digging I found this page

http://www.o2.co.uk/support/generalhelp/howdoi/texting/devicesettings

Message service centre settings

  • +447802000332 for Pay Monthly, or
  • +447802092035 for Pay & Go

and substituted the latter for the former in the above method and the phone now works fine.

My guess is that is if peolple do a web search for their correct SMS Service Center (depending on carrier) and do the above method to log it into the phone it might work for a lot of people.

Sorry what I used was

Hi,

Apparently the reason you cant send texts is because your Service Centre number is wrong.

Go to your phone number pad and type

*#5005*7672# and press the call button

a number should come up on your screen, make a note of the number then

Go to your phone number pad and type

**5005*7672*the number you have been given# and press the call button

Now try sending your text again.

Hi Shibani yes as per

Go to settings, messages, make sure imessage is on. Once you have done that check that at the receive at icon it has your mobile number. If not go back into settings then phone and in the my number field type in your mobile number starting with + and your country code. Don't type the first 0. That worked for me. Good luck, seems to be a common problem that different people resolve in different ways.

Mine seems fine now. The Subject box has gone which seems weird, but seems to have sorted it.

I am on ios 6 by the way.

'Thank you' to linesh and North Stones about "not to fill in the subject field"

It works without having to do the other options.

May be it is not a problem of "a bug in the subject field", but rather be due to difference between MMS vs SMS. In our country MMS is not yet available, and sending message after filling the 'subject' field brings MMS "error". Now I just hide the "subject" field via message settings. ...

Best wishes...

I was able to send and receive pictures perfectly thru SMS & MMS messaging until Feb 27, 2013 when it stopped sending pictures abruptly. Soon I realized I was not receiving them either.

My phone number appears to be formatted properly, I think...

I am in the US, it shows:
+1 (XXX) phn-nmbr

where it says: "Send & Receive" in Settings>Messages, it says "2 addresses >" when I view iMessage it shows my phone number (checked) and my email address (also checked).

I've tried:

removing/replacing the SIM

making sure my phone number appeared in the Settings>Phone section (both with and without the +1)

my phone number is also correct and listed under mobile phone under my Apple ID account information and in iTunes

Removing/replacing/changing the email address

turning on/off SMS, turning on/off MMS, turning on/off iMessage

shutting the phone down and restarting after each change.

friends report that this happens and then just starts working again without having fixed or changed anything, I've been down for 3 days and now I am here looking for help.

unsure whether related or not, but I can no longer access my home wifi network either.

I just replaced an Android with this iPhone one week ago, and I'm feeling like it was a rather expensive mistake.

Pretty much the same issues here! I didn't just switch tho, and mine has been going on for over a month... I was having service problems, had the sim replaced at AT&T, didn't fix it, went to the apple store, they did a software wipe and said not to restore from a backup in case it's a software bug, I didn't, didn't fix it, got a new phone... Still didn't fix it. I can't text, send pic msgs, now my email is messed up. Tried all the tips in the thread other than calling that number, everything was already set up as it should be. SO. ANNOYING. Apple has gotten too complicated for its own good.
