1TB LaCie d2 Quadra after upgraded HDD inside to 3Tb Hitachi 7K3000 (SATA3 / 7200rpm / 64Mb Cache) could recognized 800Gb ONLY by Mac OS X Lion!?!

Hi, I have a big problem!

MY SPEC:

- Mac Mini Server "Mid 2010" / Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 + Windows 7 Ultimate / Core2Duo 2.66Ghz / 4Gb DDR3 /...

- 1TB LaCie D2 Quadra enclosure which include: 1 X USB 2.0, 2 X Firewire 800, 1 X Firewire 400, 1 X E-Sata.

- HDD 3.5" Hitachi 3Tb (7K3000) SATA3 / 7200rpm / 64Mb Cache.

MY STORY:

- After my 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra is out of warranty, I decide to upgrade the HDD inside the enclosure from 1Tb (original) to 3Tb (I bought by myself). Ok, the way to open the enclosure is not the problem with me and I replaced the HDD inside on successful.

- After upgrade HDD to Hitachi 3Tb, my Mac OS X Lion and Windows 7 Ultimate now could see ONLY 800Gb partition instead of 3Tb! OK, no problem, I plugged my 3Tb HDD to SATA port on the normal PC running Windows 7 Ultimate. The PC could see whole 3Tb through Disk Management tool. I used that tool to format the 3Tb HDD to NTFS (just 1 partition).

- Everything running well.

- OK, I put back the 3Tb HDD into LaCie D2 Quadra Enclosure then connected the enclosure to my Mac Mini again through USB 2.0 port. But, so straight, My Lion 10.7.2 still could access 800Gb ONLY!!! I boot to Windows 7 Ultimate through Bootcamp on my Mac Mini. Now the Windows 7 on my Mac could see full 3Tb as the normal PC did. I tried many ways to force my Mac Os X Lion to recognize full 3Tb, but NO Luck! (Try to use Macdrive 8 on Windows 7 Ultimate to format the 3Tb from NTFS to HFS+, NO Luck! Tried the difference ports like Firewire 800, Firewire 400... NO Luck!).

- I really need to use that enclosure on my Mac OS X Lion! Please give me the solutions! Like a software or firmware update... to do it. I saw you have the 3Tb LaCie D2 Quadra - USB 3.0 / Firewire 800 is similar with my device, so that I think I could use some methods from that device to apply to my device!

Sorry for my bad English and have a good day!

^^ Thank you so much in advance! ^^

I couldn't get this to work with a Mac Mini running Mavericks. I did eventually; here's what I did wrong:

* I had the old D2 daisy-chained off a new one, and the update tool wouldn't find it. Plug the old one in directly.

* The update tool fails to do anything on Mavericks, due to permissions. You need to open terminal, and run:

# sudo /Applications/LaCieFirmwareUpdater.app/Contents/MacOS/LaCieFirmwareUpdater

Then the tool should update the drive. It should take about 30secs, then I had to eject and physically unplug/plug back in the device.

Then it works like a charm! 3TB upgrade!

When I did this on my Mac mini, I just had the one, old hd that needed upgrading connected via FW800. I don't remember exactly where it was mounted on not, but try all the different combinations.

If you run into future problems, please copy and paste the output of the command line. Also, ensure when running from terminal that you don't have the updater running elsewhere

Hi Amacuse,

thanks for your reply. I think I have the answer. I tried to unpdate another D2 Quadra but this time was a V2 and with your advice all worked well. I think the problem is in my D2 Quadra V1 (or V0? who knows?) that does not allow the update. That's strange because it supports at least up to 1.5 tb (that was the size of the original disk).

At least one of them works... For the other I need another enclosure or another solution. Thanks again!

Hi guys,

I know nothing has been posted for some time but I am giving it a go.

I have the same issue here, upgrading from a 2x1TB to a 2x3TB but only seeing 1GB (using safe mode ie RAID 1).

I downloaded the firmware updater mentioned above and also tried the terminal instruction but I keep getting the same message in the updater "no compatible LaCie device were found. Please plug a compatible LaCie device".

I am running OS X 10.9.2 and tried to connect via firewire 800 and USB

Any idea on how I could upgrade the firmware? How could I check if it is upgradable?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Problem solved by LaCie Customer Service, who turned out to be extremly responsive and helpful.

Simple answer: reset the LaCie by setting it to RAID 0 and then back to RAID 1.

This means however that the data will be lost and therefore has to be temporarly backed up somewhere else for the time of the reset.

Hope this helps
