ipod nano recall - time to respond from apple

I input all the information for the nano recall in Apple's website, but it is just sitting there. I've heard others got their new nanos already, but we haven't even received a box to send the old one in yet. It's been 16 days. There doesn't seem to be a way to contact Apple to find out what the timeline is or if my case just got stuck in no man's land.

Anyone else waiting a long time for a response?

It seems like a lot of us submitted our requests at the same time (or even on the same day). I put in for two replacements on the 13th of November and started to get concerned that it has been 3 weeks with no box. I've spent the last half-hour trying to figure out who, if anybody, I should contact to see what's up but, as everyone seems to have noticed, there is no clear point-of-contact for recall-related issues so you end up lost in the fog of which online support link to follow or whether to call someone. Thanks for the replies on this thread, it saved me from wasting time on the phone tomorrow, I guess the wait continues.

  1. I was chatting with someone on the apple online store chat about this. hope it helps!
  2. You are chatting with Dan T, an Apple Expert
  3. Hi, my name is Dan T. Welcome to Apple!
  4. Good afternoon!
  5. How are you?
  6. I need info on the iPod nano recall
  7. Oh okay, I see.
  8. Do you have an iPod you'd like to check today?
  9. I filled out the request on november 11, got the box on november 23rd, and it got to the facility on november 26th. what model will be the replacement. and why did the box take so long? i am still waiting
  10. We've had a very large response, so we're working hard to accommodate all the iPods that are being shipped.
  11. Have you already contacted AppleCare to find the current repair status?
  12. yes. i looked on the repair status page, and it says "product replacement pending" What will the replacement be?
  13. We're sending you a new iPod nano, which will be the same model you sent in,

  1. but with the new battery.
  2. We definitely apologize for any inconvenience.
  3. You should get an email when it ships to you.

Why does it say "if you have a personalized unit, you will get a non-personalized unit back?

Oh, if it's engraved, we're not able to re-engrave the iPod.

Why would you need to re-engrave it?

We offer a free engraving service for all new iPod purchases at Apple.com.

So, if you are just going to replace the battery, why would you need to replace the back?

  1. Oh no, we are replacing the entire iPod.
  2. Did you have an engraved iPod?

No, but that is good news, because my nano had a broken screen, and was pretty banged up. Will the replacement come with new earbuds/cable?

Oh no, it's just the iPod.

OK. Will it be the same color/capacity?

  1. Yep, yep.
  2. Same color and capacity.

OK. will it be new, or refurbished?

They'll be just like new, but with a 90 day warranty.

So when you say "just like new", I'm assuming that means it's refurbished?

  1. Oh no, it's an all new iPod.
  2. We rebuilt them with the new battery.
  1. Did you really have that many in stock?
  2. Or were you somehow able to restart the production?
  1. I'm sure we had to remake a few, but I really wouldn't be the one to ask. AppleCare would know better than I.
  2. If you'd like, they would be able to check your replacement request to see if there's any more news, as well.

How would I contact apple care if i don't know the new unit's serial number, and the old one is out of warranty?

  1. They can take your replacement request number.
  2. And check on it all that way.

Why did the box take so long to get to me?

We just had a lot to send out. To be honest, I didn't even get mine yet.

How come it is taking so long to get back to me?

  1. I really don't know! They may have had to build a few of them.
  2. You might be able to call AppleCare and check.
  3. Would you like their contact information?

I know their contact info.

Getting the empty box wasn't the issue, I sent it back and over a week later still no confirmation email they received it. I got proof of postage and all. Just hope its due to a delay in the system. When I go online it just says empty box shipped nothing about diagnosis etc. Let me know if, when you send yours back, you get a confirmation email receipt.

I submitted my request Nov 14th. They shipped me an empty box on Dec. 6th and I recieved it on Dec. 9th and mailed it back via Fedex the same day (Dec. 9th). My fedex tracking number says they should receive it on Dec 15th (to Elk Grove, CA). The email said "You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen)." so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I'm surprised at everyone freaking out about not getting their boxes yet. Does anyone have one of these that they are still using, or even works? Mine has been crap for many years now and thrown in a box of junk electronics. I can understand if this is something you use everyday and won't be able to listen to music without it, but I'm pretty confident that's not the case, so just relax and be happy when you get a working unit back in 3 months.

No one is freaking out. We're just irritated at the lack of information from Apple. It's PR is really lousy with this recall.

To answer your question, yes, my mother was still using her iPod Nano. She wants it back to play her music. As it always ran so hot, I don't feel it is safe for her to use now that we know it could catch fire.
