Really surprised that the voice recog. is linked to a server or such...considering Siri seems to be "phone" based. Odd...but hey, I'm no guru to this stuff...there must be a reason...just can't quite put my finger on what that is when you type or speak "locally" before "sending"...I thought it was derived from the phone and not the network connection, if you follow my drift.....

Siri is entirely server based. The phone has no internal voice recognition capability other than Voice Control, which is disabled when Siri is on. That's why the specs say that you must have an Internet connection to use Siri.

The phone does not have the power to do speaker independent voice recognition on the device, which falls in the "extremely hard" category in computer science. Also, the system is heuristic - it uses the huge database of speech samples to improve its recognition over time.

Oh, and I am a guru on this stuff. My first speech recognition project was 15 years ago.

For what is it worth to anyone, you can send email and text messages via voice dictation using the Siri app, (hit the big button at the bottom twice). Specify contact information and dictate your message. The voice to text will work. The problem is with the email and messaging apps are not connecting to the servers. No voice to text dictation will work unless the information can be passed on to the servers, translated and downloaded back to the phones. Apple Support has not been provided any useful information as to what happened or when it will be fixed. For those that wonder why the voice recognition software is not kept on the phone itself, check out Dragon Naturally Speaking and you will see that the files and hardware required are beyond the capacity of smartphones. Keep in mind you did not have to train the software to understand you. So, the trade off for functionality is server side storage of the software. Not making excuses for Apple, but I can apprecieate what they have accomplished and the fragility of the process. Having said that, the longer I wait for it to work, the less appreciation I will have.

"No voice to text dictation will work unless the information can be passed on to the servers, translated and downloaded back to the phones."

Actually, this is not exactly true. Dragon now has capability out-of-the-box to do 90%+ generic-level accuracy. Per David Pogue: "The accuracy is so good that you no longer have to begin by reading a four-minute training text, as in years past. I installed the software on my PC, skipped the training, and dictated one of my old columns, 1,300 words. It achieved 100 percent accuracy, even correctly nailing toughies like “LinkedIn,” “Twitterific,” “freebies” and “twentysomethings.” (It made one error, but I’m letting it off the hook for not recognizing the Web site name Bebo.)"

I can only assume that the part of Siri that is still working is the generic part. Why Apple has to send the apps-initiated speech to a server may perhaps relate to another Pogue comment: " Back in December, Nuance began offering a free iPhoneapp, Dragon Dictation. You speak; the company’s computers in Boston analyze your snippet; within seconds, the converted, typed text appears on your screen. But this was no altruistic move; Nuance had an ulterior motive. Its computers keep copies of those hundreds of thousands of dictated messages (no names attached, of course), creating an amazing central archive of American voices and speech patterns. Nuance engineers later exploited this gold mine, using it to test out new recognition algorithms to improve Dragon’s accuracy. Sneaky, eh?"

Shouldn't Apple be paying us for the data? Especially if what they promise, and what we paid for, doesn't work?
