Another 10 iMacs have been upgraded, started at 4PM here GMT, not one issue, have a few more to go.
Still been doing the Permissions Repair / software Update method.
How many here that are experencing issues actually repaired the permissions beforehand?
In fact I haven't yet updated because I don't currently have any backup (my old external hard disk broke down few days ago and I should make my mind up to go to buy a new one). I repeat I agree with you and I know there's always the possibility of some huge problem, but I also believe that they should have realized about this problem before releasing it or at least they should have removed the update from servers until the cause was found.
Probably I'm expecting too much.
Just finished a Repair Permissions and still NOT having any of the issues.

Maybe we should concentrate on nailing down the problem? 😕
It really seems to me that some users got a faulty update file from one of the Apple servers. Software Update selects the server depending on what locale you're using and what your timezone is (sort of). So maybe only certain people that grabbed the file from e.g. taiwan servers are affected? Software Update seems to ignore checksums could be a guess.
Second. I've formatted my harddisk case sensitive. Some silly apps don't like that and crash. Others won't even install (Canon Camera software for example, but there's a workaround on the net for that). Maybe the installer struggles with case sensitive file-systems. It happened before on Panther 10.3.x (can't remember which update that was).
For what it's worth, I do think this was a decent screw up. Apple's history with updates through Software Update have been pretty good. Anecdotally, I've never experienced an issue using Software Update before this. With that said, I'm impressed with Apple's response thus far, as this morning I got a call from an Apple engingeer wanting to talk about the issue, what I was doing before hand, and also gather what information they could from my Mac mini. I think that speaks well of their desire to find out what's going on and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Re: Repairing disk permissions, I generally think that's voodoo. I was able to get to the Recovery partition, repaired the drive and repaired permissions on the broken 10.7.3 update, rebooted, and still got the same errors. Clearly, repairing permissions is not a fix all and likely wouldn't have helped before or didn't help after, in this case.
This is not happening to everyone, clearly. But it's happened to enough people that Apple is taking it seriously. Maybe not at the pace we'd all like, but they're trying. In the mean time, there are lots of good solutions for people who are currently experiencing the problem that don't involve Time Machine. Let's stick to the subject at hand and continue to help people in need of it.

So you are here in an Apple Support forum, ranting about an issue about which you have no experience and more to the point not affected by it. Hmmmm
Tom - all complaining and ranting aside...in situations like this one - various updates of version 9 and version 10, when Apple is made aware of the issue and in their privacy make a fix to a previously distributed up date - both the delta and combo - do you or others following this discussion know:
if Apple makes an annoucement, or upon fixing the bug makes a version extension (e.g. 10.7.3.x), or do they simply repopuate the distribution container and say nothing?
I would assume (not a good bet) that even if the problem is related to only the delta or only the combo, both would be fixed?
Is there anything else to be done by us users, but to guess, and give it a couple of days for Apple to silently do their thing and then hope one is not too early on applying the download.
I have deliberately held off on updating my one machine (MBook Air) that was purchased with 10.7 on board. For safety and reliablility my other machines remain at 10.6.8
Finally, for all those who try to keep up with the pace of version changes put out by Apple for any ot their software and as alluded to by many other contributors to this thread - repair persions, make a clone, repair permissions after upgrading and keep the clone close to you until you are assured that no surprises are lurking out there.

Camel,
What to type in Terminal if 'Macintosh HD' isnt your maindrive? I have a Crucial M4 SSD.
installer -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.7.3\ Update\ Combo/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD <--- Doesnt work for me
All i can say is I freaked out with the issue because it rendered my machine a $2500 paper weight. I never had a reason to doubt the update, cause in my experience with Apple I have never had too. I have backups, but at home, not in my pocket, never had a reason to carry one around.
I appologise for that.
"So you are here in an Apple Support forum, ranting about an issue about which you have no experience and more to the point not affected by it. Hmmmm"
I don't. One of my best friend WAS affected by this problem and so he called me (he's very new to apple's world). I have been able to solve the problem by forcing the combo update I installed on a usb key via terminal opened in HD recovery (as I read on the internet). Now his system works but I spent half a day working on it not having ever experinced anything like that. I do not want to lose so much time again.
Anyway it is a matter of principles.
PS you haven't experienced any problem therefore you should not criticise people who talk about it.
Hope this conversation is ended considered that you do not even want to try to understand my point of view and my considerations.
And as I can see you neither listen to anybody's consideration. This is not the right place to start quarreling.
Bye, hope you will never have this sensation, loosing a Mac you ha paid so much money.
......Hope this conversation is ended considered that you do not even want to try to understand my point of view and my considerations........
I feel your pain, of course. You must be willing to hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Let this be a learning experience for your friend. He was lucky to have you.
I am sooo disappointed! Not only because this never happended with mac before, but because there is NO SINGLE COMMENT from apple yet! I had the same issue, but for me NO APP, not even terminal worked. Same in safe mode. Such a kernel error crashing the whole GUI, how can that happen? It s severe!
I installed the combo update from the recovery mode and this resolved the issue as far as I can see, but still, I am not sure if I can trust this version of my iOS now!
APPLE, SAY SOMETHING, what kind of customer service is that for a high-end product??
My safari doesnt work annymore.
When i open safari i got a white page and he stays searching.
Everything other works fine.
Mail Msn.
No i download chrome thats works also.
I installed the combo but safari doesnt works.
Can some one help me ?
That's what he told me. They are all over this problem trying to figure out what is causing the problem. I'm assuming the software update version now rewrites the folder that is causing the problem. Let me try and clear up my statement. They know what folder is messed up that causes the cui issue. But they don't know what third party program is corrupting it. The combo update rewrites the folder and files that have been corrupted and that's why combo updates aren't affected and are fixing the problem.
Aside from TimeMachine, I run weekly backup sets to a Drobo. Thursday I have Carbon Copy Cloner set to Clone to a drive I keep off-site and Friday a clone runs that I keep handy in case the HD goes or something catastrophic happens.
A backup is essential (it's never IF your drive will fail but WHEN) and if you can afford it (1 & 2 TB drives are relatively inexpensive these days and CCC is free) make a bootable clone in case something like this or a drive crash happens.
However, I too agree that something went wrong with this update. In all the years I've owned Apple computers (since 1980) this is the first time I can recall something going this far awry. Fortunately, while inconvenient it was still fairly easy to correct and I don't think too many people actually lost data.
