ecotecit,

Just looked at disk utility in the First Aid section, non of the options are availible. I am a Windows IT engineer by trade, and am still in a learning curve with MAC OS, so , I am just so, mad I have a system that will not run even a finder window....

Had to select Macintosh HD instead of Disk 1 Mac OSx Base system. Running repair now, Got The volume Macintosh HD apprears to be OK.

Running Repair Disk Permissions -

StevoSr,

First, I assume you have a working network connection available. Boot the MBP while holding the Option/Alt key. Select your Lion Recovery partition. Once it's up, select the Re-Install Lion option. Depending on your system and your network connection it may take anywhere from 1-3 hours. Mine took an hour and forty-five minutes.

This recovered my MacBook and also updated the system to 10.7.3 in one fell swoop. It's been running over a day now with no issues.

Hope this helps.

This is the just of the Repair disk permission issues it listed when I ran Repair disk Permissions:

user differs on"usr/share/collabd/webauthd" should be 94 user is 221

Group - Same thing

Mutiple User and group differs

Perfimissions Differ on "Library/Jave"; shoube drwxr-xr-x theyr are drwarwxr-x

multiple permissions differ on different system/library....

Got a few more group differes to, long list of permissions differ.

Going to restart now and see what happens.

Has anyone reading this used Software Update to update to 10.7.3 THIS MORNING (Friday) and do you have the problems described in this thread?

The 10.7.3 update is still showing up in Software Update for my 2011 MacBook Air. There's no way I would use it (as compared to the standalone combo updater) but I'm wondering why it's still available in Software Update unless Apple has quietly fixed it.

Who cares? Just use the Combo-Updater. Why apply an incremental update, which may conflict with user preferences and corruptions in the current system, when a complete integrated update is available? Apple incremental updates is a well worn path. Take updates seriously, prepare with comprehensive bootable backups and apply the combo-updater when you feel compelled to update.

No, it's never the Users fault. I will say one thing. It's Apples fault for successfully creating the illusion operatng systems are an 100% guarantee. "Most" is not 100%, so take that for what's worth. There are steps for a User to learn which would bring one closer to 100%. But thats asking a lot, so we'll settle for the least common denominator "most".

I don't like getting involved in these discussions typically, but this is a pretty bad foul up on Apple's part. I had the issue as well, and I could even launch a web browser to go download the combo update after running 'Software Update'. At that point, my only real option was restoring from a Time Machine backup, which cost me quite a bit of time and I was working towards a deadline.

There absolutely is the expectation that software delivery through Software Update be vetted prior to posting and distribution, especially if it's causing such extremely deblitating results such as not being able to launch applications and causing the finder to crash and log out (as happened to me in addition to the CUI errors).

I'll be holding off even on the combo updater at this point until there is some notification and acknowledgement from Apple of the issue. It will be nice to know, once they have gathered all the crash logs, what subset of users and/or systems are actually experiencing these issues. I for one am on a 17" 2011 MBP and was running 10.7.2.

There is the absolute expectation you have a bootable clone of your working system for mission critical systems. I have had no issues updatng my computers. You are wise to take heed of issues relating to updates. Which is why you have a cloned backup of your system when you do update, published fix or not.

I totally agree with you that everybody should have a copy of the OS in order to be able to solve any kind of unpredictable problem.

Anyway a huge and experienced company like Apple should not make such big mistakes, causing problems to many users. I believe it's their duty to inform us about the situation and about any kind of (official) fix.

If it was my fault I would behave that way.

Hi All,

After installing 10.7.3 update yesterday I find that my xcode is no longer working. I crashed after exhibiting strange behaviour and I have a error window which says "Restore Windows The application “Xcode” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?". I phoned apple support who could offer no help other than there are problems with the 10.7.3 update and I should look on the forums , So here I am looking ? Any help here would be great !!

What mistake did Apple make? No company can guarantee 100% compliance. I have no issues with this current update. This forum serves as a canary in the mine. It's an Apple support forum on which you are free to learn and and within limits rant. Prudent, inexperienced Users would do well to wait untill the smoke clears. Meanwhile there is much to learn about the process. I was secure in the fact I was prepared in the event of some misque. Cloned backup of existing working HD.
