I have the same problem, but I cannot use the combo updater because all my browsers immediately crash. I could restore from my Time Machine backup, but ironically, I cannot get into the restore mode on my late 2008 MacBook. I hold the cmd key after start, but after like 2 seconds it shows me the login screen with my account and the guest account – and nothing happens. What should I do? Thanks
Thanks! This worked.
Instead of mounting the dmg in Disk Utilty, I just did it via the command line in Terminal as a shortcut. Once the comb-updater applied successfully, I shut down the MB Pro and restarted. Everything came up clean. Looks good.
I created a Lion recovery USB stick (although, I proabably could have just booted from the Recovery partition on that Mac, now that I think about it) to boot the machine that had the fatal UI problem. From another Mac, I downloaded the 1.3 GB combo update DMG file and copied it to an external USB drive.
Once the failed MB Pro booted into recovery, I plugged in the USB drive, went to Utilities -> Terminal and performed the following:
1) Used hdiutil to mount the combo-updater dmg:
-bash-3.2# hdiutil mount /Volumes/USBDRIVE/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg

installer: The upgrade was successful.
Shut down the MB Pro. Rebooted from the hard drive. Everything seems to be working fine now. It's running 10.7.3 successfuly.
Thanks again.
Unfortunately I'm one of those who installed 10.7.3 (on the iMac - early 2009) and now can't launch any apps apart from iTunes (can't even open the System Configuration). Do you think this approach will work:
Over at OSXDaily.com they're saying that downloading the Combo-Install file and installing that file on top of the existing, corrupt 10.7.3 installation gets rid of the problem. Since I can't I open any apps I don't see a way to download the Combo Install with the iMac.
However, I also have a MacBook Air which still runs on 10.7.2. How about downloading the Combo-Install on the Air, saving the DMG file to a USB stick, then copying the DMG file from the USB stick to the iMac and then running the installation? Would that work?
I guess this would save me the trouble of either using an older Time Machine backup or completely reinstalling Lion, which would probably take considerably longer than my approach ...
Do I have to go into the Recovery partition and use the Terminal?
Can't I just boot up the iMac, insert the USB-Stick with the Combo file, drag the Combo file from the USB-Stick to the desktop, double-click the DMG-file and install and after finishing the installation reboot?
Is there any pattern to those who have run into this problem? Last night I thought everyone had the problem and am surprised to learn that it works for most.
I did not have any issues downloading.
I do not have any external devices attached or special drivers installed.
My affected system is a late 2011 MacBook air running 10.7.2.
I did the install from an account that is not an administrator.
What else could be pertinent or remotely related to this problem?
On my 2008 iMac the update appears to work fine. I did a Repair Disk Permissions immediately after the update and there were two permissions that needed to be repaired as I remember. I just ran Repair Disk Permissions again and nothing needed to be repaired. I used Software Update to download 10.7.3.
I crashed with 10.7.3 Apple support very helpful even if my iMAC is 6 years old.
Now rebooting with Lion as the recommended fix
Cold start, press option key, select reinstall OSX from recovery disc
download from Apple app page
good luck
Special thanks to Camel_PL. I really freaked when this happened to me as I am about to travel (and time machine takes 10+hours to restore).
Then I found your thread and followed your steps. I am back in the game!!
Apple should really step up here. In the meantime, I'm really glad that Camel_PL did.
Scanned through most of the posts on this and did not see an what I am looking for. Went to Software Update this morning and it came up as no updates available. I then went to the App store and it showed an Update available. I started the update and it says the file size is >4GB.
People here are talking about getting the Combo from the Apple website or the Software Update. Does no one else use the App store? Is anyone having the problem with the update from the App store?
I have installed the 10.7.3 update on my iMac without problem. I have been using the Lion OSx since the day of its initial release as well as the first two maintenance releases, so far, I have not encountered any problems.
my problem. had no time machine backup at work, but this solution works with an usb device 😉
Same problem here, worked no problem on my i5 iMac, but I updated my Macbook Pro using the software update feature; machine is pretty much INOP. Apple? When are you going to take this BS update down?! I hope you have a fix for this like now! Let me guess, you are going to act like there no problem until 90 percent of the community complains right?
Same problem for me here, on my Air 2011. Had to restore from TM (at least I did a backup before the update). After restoring to 10.7.2 and getting the combo, it worked like a charm. All apps and extensions are working without additional upgrades, so the error does not seem to be a specific extension (like Total Finder or Moom).
I am not buying the explanation to install from Combo. Most people, being used to "It Just Works", will dully upgade from the online package as advised by the System Upgrade utility, not go download things from Apple and mess around (they would be Linux users if they would like doing that...).
This was simply poor testing and it is another lesson not to jump on an update right after the release...

Hi,
but if the system are not able to start slow ? it stops immediantly after crash message.
I got no influence at all to do anything!
The backup was installed, I got some connections via firewire with my iBook, just to see if it is everything on the HD. it looks perfect ;-)
But how I`m able to install a combo on this system or anything else ?
Thats my first time that I`m confuse about Apple....
If you have any idea, dont hesitate to tell me.
By the way both of my iBooks updated as usual without any problem
Ciao
Gerhard
Combo is a solution, but I have some problems still where I need to repair windows in email and safari. And some stuff loads slow now. Even after running Utilities repair program on HD. Apple made a serious mistake.
