For those unaware of how OSX Works. After a System update, OSX reindexs the file system ( Spotlight )
or MDS activity in Activity monitor under CPU. Indexing is CPU intensive and will take 30min or so to complete.
In the meantime, if you jump right into a productlivity regime you will notice a slowdown in tasks until the System completes indexing. That's why some users use a utlitltiy such as iStat, which loads in the menue bar and provides disk, CPU and network information.
If you do use the Recovery partition, it will now download the latest version from MAS and so you will have 10.7.3 installed.
BTW I have updated using the combo and also done an erase/install using the MAS download, both with no problem.
Unless you really need this update for some reason, I would hold off for a week or two. From what I can tell there are no new features to speak of, just fixes and additonal language support.
One of my 15" MB Pros updated through software update just fine. The other encountered this problem and was a serious pain to fix. Not as bad as actually having to do a restore from Time Machine, put painful enough to wish I had waited a few days to see if a problem like this surfaced that impacted more than just a handful of users.
The combo update I downloaded from the Apple support site (referenced in this discussion thread) did fix the 15" MB Pro that was 'bricked' because of this issue.
So if you must upgrade now, download the full combo updater for your best shot at success.
I did NOT install the update yet.

Gruesse, Carsten
Another victim. Perhaps some useful stats for the Apple people reading this thread:
o 2010 MacPro (Late 2010)
o 10.7.2 Server
o Updated Delta Software Update
No errors on install, rebooted, logged in, most apps crashed/CoreUI errors.
Read forum threads, restored TM backup from about 20 minutes before my update (timing is everything) - installed Combo update, rebooted, logged in, all mostly good.
Things in ~/Library got pretty mucked up, Dropbox preferences gone, Mail.app having to re-import all mail, mds running (spotlight) and a few other things broke in that area, but most things are back to normal and working.
Same problem here on my 2009 i Mac.
Updated last night, cui cui cui and nothing worked, lots of swearing then I restored from an earlier time from my Timecapsule. Works ok again after a 4 hr restore!! Grrrrrr
Now, I'm not going to attempt a work around solution, I'll wait for Apple to get their act together and fix the update.
Question:- isn't there an "auto update" function somewhere in the OS? Shouldn't we turn it off so it doesn't automatically update to 10.7.3 ?
Talked to Apple did some diagnostics and still no results. I am running iMac 27' i7 Core 3.4 GHz & 12 G Ram August 2011 Model OS X Lion. Did upgrade to 10.7.3 on two of my iMacs. My iMac Intel Duo Core 20.5' 3 G Ram upgraded fine and is running better than ever. My new mac has actually crash on the operating system. Lost all volume control, internet disconnects randomly, OS X Mail not working and everything is lagging big time. Anything related to operating system is either crashing or lagging with the spinning wheel of death. After talking to Apple, I was told it is probably my hard drive crashing. I am taking it in to have it looked at by the technicians where I purchased. I am not getting the CUI crashes most of you are getting. But I am getting the crashes with anything related to the operating system.
I just updated my wife's 13-inch, Mid 2011 MacBook Air using Software Update and I do not see any problems. Again, as with the 2008 iMac, I immediately used Repair Disk Permissions after updating. It repaired two permissions. I also used Repair Disk Permissions before applying the update (I believe I also did that with the 2008 iMac).
I've been following this thread all day. There are enough people who have reported here that applying the combo update doesn't solve this problem. It does for many but it doesn't for some.
Given that, unless you have a lot of time on your hands to do a Time Machine or bootable clone restore, it doesn't seem to make much sense to install this update unless you are affected by the small number of problems that this update is supposed to fix.
If you do, make sure that you have a current backup (TM or bootable clone). I would also boot first into your Recovery HD partition and do a Disk Repair and permissions repair on your Mac Lion boot volume BEFORE doing the update.
As for me, I'm waiting to see what happens over the next few days.
My advice for what it's worth. Relying soley on Time Machine, except for day to day data retrieval is a mistake. I know Apple tries to keep it simple but a relaible bootable clone of your existing working system can truly save you. If something goes wildly wrong with an update or an upgrade, you can immediately boot from the clone in 5 minutes with no loss of productivity. The benefits of bootable external clone of your drive are many. When booted from the external, your can manipulate and restore your internal drive with fresh system installs, plus any updates. Migration Assistant, in your Utiliies folder offers a seamless and much more reliable transfer of Users, Libraries and Applications. "Most" of the failures here are the result of applying updates on already corrupted systems.
A four hour reinstall from a Time Machine back up is rediculous. A clone of your system would have had you up and running in 5 minutes. Take the time to clone your working system to an external drive. You can still use Time Machine for emergency back up of your cloned HD. Use the clone to reformat and do a clean install and update/upgrade of system.
I 100%+ agree with Tom. In my post above, I included Time Machine with a bootable clone in terms of having a useful backup. I must practice what I preach. I tried Time Machine a while back. I went back to cloned backups using Carbon Copy Cloner set to archive any changes between backups. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion. Being able to boot from a backup is worth so much. You can do a faster restore as compared to Time Machine and you can run other disk repair utilities (such as Disk Warrior) from the bootable clone.
I have a cloned backup that is wireless to a sparse bundle disk image on a disk connected to a Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a bootable clone on a portable hard drive that a carry to work and back with me each day. I have a third bootable clone in my desk at work. I backup my home folder twice a day (morning and night) to the wireless backup at home and update my full clone backups every two to four weeks depending on how much new software I've installed. The disk image clone isn't bootable but can easily be restored to a working Mac using Disk Utility.
CCC is free donationware. If you try it and use it, please consider a donation. I donate at least once year.
I understand what Scott and Tom are suggesting but cricky fellas could it be more complicated?
Most of the users out there like myself don't have the expertise or time to do all this!!
Keep ot simple.
KISS method......
Kiss Method:
One external 500GB FireWire hardrive. One free copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. 1 hour of your time.
Plug in the FW Drive. Boot your Mac. Start Carbon Copy Cloner. Choose Source Disk ( your exsiting system disk) Choose Destination Disk, your External FW Drive. Select Clone. It's that simple. If you have questions, you know where to come for help! 😉
I had the same problem and had to do the Combo Update trick and it worked! However, I am now unable to connect to the internet without manually assigning an IP address.
I had to install from the restore partition using terminal and it produces these warnings:

I am a little concerned that there appear to have been some networkutility and airport files that wern't installed.
