I spent a fair amount of time (couple of hours) on the phone today with Apple support and Apple corporate headquarters.
With respect to this issue: at least 2 senior support analysts have reported this problem as a 'high priority' problem to Apple engineering. Once they report the problem to engineering, they wait until engineering analyzes the issue and: a) fixes it with a software patch or release, or b) issues a statement or report. During this analysis time it is apparently corporate policy NOT to comment. Once engineering figures out what's going on it is apparently their decision on what information/fixes/etc. they release.
In my opinion, sometimes a statement acknowledging that a problem exists/may-exist/has-been-brought-to-our-attention goes a long way towards informing a large user community and keeping people happier while bugs are being sorted out.
