Updated to 5.0 and now TV shows are out of order

I just updated to software version 5.0 and now the TV shows in the Computers section are listed non-alphabetically and not even numerically by season. Has anyone else noticed this?

Ok raised an issue on AppleCare and spent some time Friday and Monday with Applecare investigating this:-

I can confirm

TVShows is in reverse date added order, the same as Unwatched, for AppleTV2s - latest iOS and previous iOS when connected to an iMac running latest Lion with iTunes 10.6

I can also report when the same AppleTV2s connect to an iMac running latest Lion with iTunes 10.5.3 (3) the issue does NOT occur and TVShows are correctly listed.

AppleCare have escalated.

Just for clarity, I have wiped, reset and restored AppleTV2 with latest iOS and it continues to exhibit the same problem.

I am using my iPad to find TVShows we want to watch until they fix iTunes, because finding a TVShow out of 880 random order sorted TVShow Seasons is tough going.

Applecare promised to get back to me and update, I'll share when they do.

Still not sure all people are getting same results.

Caprica, S01E05 (my newest episode of this show), added 2/17/10, aired 1/29/10

Lost S06E13 (Listed immediately after Caprica), Added 2/12/10, aired 2/2/10

Spartacus, S01E01 (way down the list), added, 8/14/11, aired 1/22/10

iMac, latest Lion, latest iTunes (10.6). Sorted "By Show"

Confirmation on other: Macbook latest Lion, iTunes 10.5.3 - all is right with the world.

I don't totally understand what order these are being displayed in relation to your other shows, but given the episode numbers you have mentioned, would I be correct in suggesting that the first episode of Caprica series 1 was added before the first episode of Lost Series 6? If so, then I would expect the order you have as it seems to be sorted on the added date of the first episode added.

I assume that the Sparticus episode, being episode 1 was the first spisode added to that series, so I would expect it to be further down the list.

Sorry, tried to edit mine to add some info, but the site dumped me and lost the edit.

It was stated that they were in reverse order, and that (if I understood correctly) that the most recently added episode of as series/season would bump that up the list. Here's what I have for Caprica and Lost, since they are sequential in the list, along with more (sorry so long - just trying to get a handle):

  1. Jericho, Pilot S01E01, only episode I have (iTunes Purchase), added 9/18/2008
  2. Wood Works Season 3, 13 episodes (PVR), all episodes added 6/18/2011
  3. Caprica (iTunes purchase - which did NOT put it as Pilot in Season 1), added 12/05/2009
  4. Caprica, Season 1 - iTunes
    1. S01E05 added 2/17/2010
    2. S01E05 HD added 2/11/2010
    3. S01E06 HD added 2/11/2010
  5. Lost, Season 6 - iTunes
    1. S06E05 added 5/23/2011 - this is my earlier episode of 2 (5 & 13), but added 2nd.
    2. S06E13 added 2/12/2010 - a year earlier
  6. Wood Works, Season 4, 13 episodes (PVR), all episodes added 6/20/2011

Other Wood Works seasons 4, 6, 1, added 6/18/2011, 6/20/2011, 6/18/2011, respectively - but 6 and 1 are separated by another series - iTunes purchase - added 5/13/2011

...

11. Firefly, iTunes purchase, all season 1 added 7/14/2011

12. Spartacus, iTunes Purchase, all Season 1 added 8/14/2011

I haven't got time to go through that lot at the moment, but I will have a look later if I get chance.

A couple of quick comments though:

The date added lists that we are seeing have the newest additions at the bottom, not the top.

Also, how are you getting the date added? I haven't been able to determine that exactly. My original observation was based on the fact that they were in roughly the order that I had remembered adding them (i.e. I originally put them on near enough alphabetically and others that showed up made sense in their positions based on when I purchased them). I know that it is currently in date added order, because I've just re-added them, but I can't find a date in the metadata anywhere.

Mar 13, 2012 9:26 AM in response to KeithJenner

The added date I'm currently getting from ATV2. That appears to be pulling from iTunes - checked a couple for sanity. I'd assume iTunes library XML is managing that.

I've tried to differentiate between my iTunes purchase/downloads, and DVD rips or PVR from TV recordings, that were then Handbraked for .m4v format before importing to iTunes.

But even among just iTunes purchases, where Apple is supplying the metadata, 2 relatively new purchases - Terra Nova and Castle, are not in the order they were added.

Mar 13, 2012 9:48 AM in response to ShouldaboughtaZen

It MIGHT be the XML library file.

Mine has the following in order:

Spartacus Blood and Sand, S01E16 (last one) - TV show - <key>11957</key>

Wood Whisperer Guild - Podcast episode - <key>11959</key> (obviously not in TV Shows)

Castle, S01E01 - TV Show - <key>11961</key>

All XML <key></key> for the content "episodes" or songs are incremented by 2 - based on a spot check of the XML file.

Mar 13, 2012 9:55 AM in response to ShouldaboughtaZen

Confirming - my next ATV2 item is a RIPPED DVD subscription that I classified - using Meta-Z - as a TV Show, is the NEXT tv show in my XML FILE!

There are a few movies and songs between them. But based on what I'm seeing, ATV2 is finding:

<key>TV Show</key><true/>

Then adding it to its own list UNSORTED beyond that <key></key> number - or maybe ignoring that altogether, since it's seems to be just compiling a list as it goes.

Mike -

Yeah - and there's a bit more to it, I think.

I have Terra Nova, Castle, Last Man Standing in order

There are several TN and LMS episodes mixed together, so I'm looking to see if it's "something" like:

Series/Season -> HIGHEST KEY of series (meaning last episode found of the season) "sort by" ordering.

I'm looking to see if Castle S02 actually is complete in the XML before the last LMS episode...

But I did find a couple instances that helped this theory along.

Additionally - I have Terra Nova with both SD and HD versions. There is quite some separation between some of these. So I'm anticipating that if the very last (hd or sd) item from Terra Nova is before the very last Castle, then my order is correct.

The odd thing so far is that I've gone through quite a bit of TN and LMS before getting to ANY of the Castle. To hold the theory, ALL the Castle episodes (SD & HD) will have to complete before the last LMS item.

I'm a bit confused now.

You say that you don't think that they are displayed in order of date added, but they are in order that they feature in the xml file. Is that correct?

I've just had a look through my xml file, and the order they display there seems to be the order that they were added, so I don't see how it can be one but not the other.

Does the order in the xml file not go along with date added, or am I missing something?
