For Microsoft computers (Windows 7):

-Go to Control Panel

-Go to Network and Internet

-Go to Network and Sharing Center

-On the side bar you will see "Change Adapter Settings) click on it

-Right click on the internet connection you are using and click "properties"

-Under "This connection uses the following items" click on "Internet Protocol Version 4" and then click on "properties"

-Click "use the following DNS server addresses" and type "208.67.222.222" in the first one and "208.67.220.220" in the second one.

-Then click ok and try updating.

I also temporarily turned off my firewall while updating.

Hope this helps.

I was finally able to download iOS 5.1 to my iPod Touch after several days of trying. Your helpful hint pointed the way. I went to the "DNS" settings of the "Network" of the "System Preferences" and found a short number there. Then I searched Earthlink Support for DNS settings and found 3 long numbers which I typed in its place. Re-attempting the iOS download from Apple worked right away. The original short number in the "DNS" page still appears on the "TCP/IP" page but a long number for an "IPv6" address there disappeared and I don't remember what it was. Still, my email and internet work. But they worked before except for this download. I don't know how the original numbers got on the "Network" settings in the first place. It may have been Apple's own set up when I installed AirPort Express. I guess Apple doesn't know everything, but neither do I. Thanks for your suggestion.

i know what the problem. everyone that said to turn off the antivitus is wrong. you have to go from your iphone and i have the iphone 4S and you go to general>software update and then it will either tell you that your phone is up to date or there will be option ot download the lastest update. for my phone, it says i have the option of downloading and installng iOS 51, and i tried doing on my computer and it had the same error, but on my phone is says clearly that you need Wi-Fi network connection to download.... so yeah that basically it.
