New iPad/iPad 3 charging time = 12 hours+

At first I thought the battery was draining extra fast on my iPad.. that combined with the heat was really worrying me. But I realized it wasn't chewing through poiwer all that much faster I just wasn't letting it charge all the way up. 6 hours to charge is still pretty poor. I went from an iPad 1 to a 3 and the iPad 1 definitely charged a lot faster than this... 1.5 hours 19% 😝

only 4.5 hours for me, not much longer than iPad 1 I just had....

For some reason my charging time is much better. Maybe it was the first charge or something. Don't know but I'm happy. It's still slow but due able.

It charging slower is actually more of a blessing in disguise honestly. Slower charging actually promotes your overall battery life. The faster the you charge batteries, the quicker overall capacity to hold a charge diminishes. Whether this was done purposefully though... That's up for grabs.

I've just started charging my new iPad (for a 2nd time after the initial charge...but I never paid attention to that one.) So far, from 21% to 28% has taken 23 minutes which, assuming the charge rate is relatively linear, it works out to 3.28 minutes per percent.

Therefore, my iPad should be fully charged in 4.3 hours (from 21%.) So it should theoretically take 5.5hrs to charge from 0% in my case. My charger is warm, like every other charger I've used, but the iPad is cool to the touch still.

I'm starting to wonder if the people suffering from long charge times also have overheating problems.

I've had my new iPad for three days now and so far I'm impressed. The retina display is pin sharp and it is fast.

It is a UK 64GB wifi/4G model and had an 80% charge out the box. I set it up and got almost 7 hours use before it switched off. The first charge from 0% to 100% took almost 8 hours. The unit gets slightly warm during charging and use but it is much the same as my iPad 2.

The second charge gave me nearly 10 hours use, mostly web browsing and installing apps. It is still charging and after 6 hours is showing 85%.

All in all a good buy and my partner is happy as she will get my iPad 2 to replace an original iPad

No problem. I usually do this over night to ensure the quickest charge. My new iPad charges overnight on this basis and doesn't seem to heat up.

Similar to my experience. It's really important to give these devices a bit of time to bed in, unlike most other electrical devices. It's a bit like cars in the old days!

But with a bit of care in the early days they perform well for a long time!

I am yet to receive my ipad 3, but thought I would take a peek at any potential issues on here!

I read in an article somewhere that the ipad 3 has twice the battery size of the ipad 2, to help power the retina display screen and also keep a simular usage time.

So surely, you cant compare charging times between older ipads and the ipad3 as the battery size is not the same.

Also one would think that due to the battery being twice the size, then yes the charging time should be longer!

But 12 hours does seem abit too much!

When I get my ipad, in early April, I will report back my findings (by then, apple will prob have an update already released! )

Longer charging time should be normal. Remember that the new iPad's battery is 42.5 Watt vs. 25 for the iPad 2. It has 70% more power and the charger is still 10W so it should take quite a bit longer to reach a full charge.

This is a repost from another apple forum I did https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3813401?start=30&tstart=0: I just got mine yesterday and used it until it reached 17% then I started charging while surfing Safari with maybe 6 apps running in the background and it took 20+ minutes to charge it up to 18%. I also did this while using only 1 app open (Safari) and still it took 20+ minutes for the charge to go up by 1%. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! My bluetooth is off and so is my cellular services. I'm going to close all the apps and let it charge while the screen is locked. Hopefully by 5pm today it will be fully charged. If not, I'm going to light Apple's a** on fire!

If you had read everything about the new iPad you would have find out that the new ipad was going to take longer than the other to charge because it has a bigger battery.

Quit whining and enjoy it.

Like that whiner that is concern about retina display when the ipad is off!!

The single biggest power-consumer in the new iPd can be the display. Displaymate just finished their tests and at full brightness, the display alone consumes 7 W! That's not counting whatever gets used by the other components. Bluetooth and wireless are minor players compared to this.

Your charger only puts out 10 watts. If you're using your iPad while it's recharging, you can expect recharge times to be 2-4 times longer than normal (5-6 hours). Run everything at full max and it'll probably just hold even.

BTW, Displaymate also reports that if you want to absolutely, positvely top off the battery charge, leave it on the charger for about an hour after the gauge hits "100%."
