iPad personal hotspot (uk)

I also don't have the hotspot feature on my new iPad in Belgium on the Proximus carrier. On my iPhone 4S also with an abonment to Proximus, I have the hotspot feature so I don't think it's blocked by Proximus. Another issue with the iOS 5.1 firmware in more than 3G network issues?

Ok, have it sorted:

You need a SIM from a 3G modem. Cut it down using a microSIM as a template (if 3G modem SIM is not a microSIM already). You need to google the APN settings for your carrier, then:

1.) Settings>Network>APN Settings

Enter your APN settings for the 3G carrier under BOTH a) Celluar Data and b) Internet Tethering

2.) Settings > General > Network

You should now see a "Personal Hotspot" option which you can toggle on

I had this happen before with a non-iPhone approved SIM in Ireland. The hotspot option doesn't appear unless you input APN settings.

In my experience a 3G modem SIM on a 12 month contract is the best way to use 3G data on an iPad. You get way cheaper 3G and more data than you could get through (€10/m w/ 10gb for me) and also you get hotspot functionality without the worry of having to top up ever 30 days. If you buy and "official" iPad SIM you'll get neither of these benefits and also you won't even get the option to input a custom APN for Data or tethering as the official SIMs are locked into this 30 day top up rubbish.

I have no Internet Tethering APN settings with a 3 UK Sim

Have you the option to input APN for both Cellular Data and Tethering in the APN settings of Cellular Data in Settings? The personal hotspot toggle won't appear unless you input the APN for Internet tethering in network settings.

For me, I don't have the field to input Tethering settings, only for cellular. I have the option on my iPhone 4S but not on my iPad. I will see with my carrier if my abonment is compatible with tethering.

I have only Celluar settings.

What Sim are you using to make it work b-dogg and have you used a modified IPCC file?

That's what I was getting at: Some "approved" iPad carriers hobble their SIMS to deliberately block that tethering APN settings field on iPads/iPhones. You're better off choosing a carrier that doesn't have an iPad plan. I know in Ireland Vodafone and O2 (official carriers) don't give you the option, but meteor and eMobile do. It would ruin their existing plans. It's strange how your iPhone allows it though. I can say from my first day with the new iPad that my experience is the same with my old sim and my previous iPhone: ie if it allowed it on the iPhone the iPad also allowed it.

Perhaps try with a carrier with no official plan and see if the field appears? Maybe borrow a sim from someone?

I have tried the following Sim Cards:

- Three UK phone Sim (i.e. a Sim with a Voice Plan but also umlimited data)

- DidaMobile (uses Three network) Data only Sim with 3GB pre-loaded

- TalkMobile (uses Vodafone) phone Sim (i.e. a Sim with a Voice Plan but also umlimited data)

None of those work and none of these give me a Cellular data APN settings section.

The first 2 (Three and Didamobile) work in a iPhone 4S (i.e. Personal Hotspot works 100%).

No modding done. I'm on eMobile (Eircom (The national landline's mobile (like BT) provider). I was with Meteor before (another carrier with no official iPhone/iPad plan). Seems to me if they have a plan they block access to the APN tethering field to protect their data plans which are a rip off.

Do these guys have and iPad SIM plan?

To be clear; this is not an apple issue. The hotspot option will appear if you've a tethering APN. It's the sims that block the input field however they do it.

Three said it will be done with update via apple in April ...

Who's fault and why or when I don't care, as long as it,s done soon.

Tmobile uk also seems to prevent the inputing of a tethering apn, therefore not allowing me to use personal hospot.

A carrier update has just been made available which has enabled this to work on my new iPad on the Three network in the UK
