iCloud Mail Down (12:30PM eastern, Apr 17, 2012)?

I was in the middle of responding to an email on iCloud.com's mail interface, and all of the sudden the "Send" button grayed out. I see I have 1 item in my drafts folder, which must be the last auto-saved draft of the reply I was typing up, but I cannot get to the draft. On iCloud.com, the loading spinner just spins and spins and eventually I get an error saying the folder can't be loaded. Same thing happens when I try to go back to the Inbox. I tried to load up the draft on my iPhone 4S, but it also just keeps spinning and never loading the draft. The fact that the problem is occuring on two devices (on separate network connections, one PC on my office's wifi and the other my 4S on AT&T's 3G network) seems to imply that the problem is server-side. Is anybody else seeing these problems?

I'm located in Tallahassee, FL. Not sure if that matters, but I suppose it could be a regional outage.

Mine seems to be fixed... I possibly had two problems.

One... The Apple Sever, as you all are also suffering...

TWO... Possibly, in the upgrade to Lion... a problem was created...

In Mail, go to Preferences... In ACCOUNTS, go to "OUTGOING MAIL SERVER"... Click on the drop down menu and select "EDIT SMTP SERVER LIST" and a windows drops down... Select the "ADVANCED" button... Verify that your password is present... If is is not, type it in. Close all and save.

This resolved MAIL.APP hanging up when trying to send, which was also happening during this outage. The timing made it seem as though they were related, but it seems that they were not.

THANK YOU TO THE SENIOR ENGINEER WHO HELPED... AND Thank you to Tim Cook's Liason Officer who got us together...

I confidence in Apple has been restored.

I'm really glad to hear it's slowly coming back up for some people. 🙂

Unfortunately for me, it's been over a week since I contacted AppleCare about issues getting into my e-mail and still no word yet on whether or when it will be fixed. The random authentication issue has been going on (in my case) since February as a random issue in the mornings, now almost a daily issue. It's now April.... I have started using Gmail as an alternative so I can send and receive e-mail again. I hate to change my e-mail address but oh well...

Frankly, I just haven't the time to wait for Apple's engineers to figure out how to run a reliable e-mail system anymore.... Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, et al. don't seen to have a problem running one. 😕

John P.,

I was having the same issue. Finally resolved it by accident by going to Settings/Mail, Contacts, & Calendars/iCloud and unchecking Mail & Notes. I then noticed several of associated mailboxes were renamed to iCloud instead of MobileMe. Its been working ever since.

Interestingly, if I now go back and check Mail & Notes it won't "stick". When I leave Settings it automatically reverts to unchecked. I can explain none of this, but I'm no longer having the authentication issue.

I'm running Lion 10.7.3 BTW.

Hello everyone, I am in New Jersey and the morning of March 30th my email went down. I have spent hours on the phone with apple, gone through 5 senior advisors, been told that I can't be compensated for the down time until the issue is fixed. Today is 3 weeks. The guy who was the only one to get back to me, told me that engineering is working on it. This is my business email ALLOVER my website, business cards, etc. I would give anything to have only 2hours or 2 days being down. What recourse do we have?????
