iPhoto email - "Your email did not go through because the server did not reply. "

In iPhoto 11 (9.2.3), I cannot send emails through iPhoto as designed. I keep getting the error, "Your email did not go through because the server did not reply. Check your Internet connection. If the connection is working properly, the email server may be down. Try sending your email again later."

1. My internet connection is fine

2. I have entered my email account information correctly (and in multiple different accounts)

3. I have no firewall running

4. I can choose to send via Mac Mail (although I prefer to use iPhoto) and it works with no problem

From my Google searches, this seems to be a VERY common problem. However, I have yet to find anyone with a solution.

So I am going to "the source" here on the Apple forums. Does anyone know how to fix this obvious bug?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPhoto 11 (9.2.3)

Hmmm...I have three email accounts associated with iPhoto now, one of my own domains, gmail as well as iCloud. Of course as mentioned I had to completely wipe them all out in iPhoto and start fresh to get them working.

I have an old Yahoo account that still works and tried setting it up for iPhoto just now and guess what...like yours, it doesn't work! I know the settings are exactly right, but I get that same error...

So I've no idea what the problem is, or who's to blame, Yahoo or Apple. I'm just glad it's working with my other accounts. It should work with Yahoo mail of course, but ???

Indeed, no idea. To be honest for all of the years that I've used iPhoto last week was the very first time I ever tried to send an email using the built-in templates. I'd always just used Mail before. That's why I started hunting for an answer and ended up here.

I had changed a number of my email settings since installing iPhoto this time around so I'm guessing that it searches for email info during the setup but never updates it. Since I've changed passwords and other settings in the meantime I can see how it might have issues.

Of course that still doesn't forgive the fact that even after updating the email settings to exactly what they should be in iPhoto it STILL doesn't work...and it took wiping them completely and starting over to resolve things.

Why is Yahoo mail problematic? Still no idea. If it is Apple I'm pretty sure it's a bug and not on purpose. Here's where to complain...I know I did!

Alas the solution highlights a bug!

So I am using Gmail with two step identification. Tried all the obvious add/delete/try again combinations but this was the only thing that worked:

1. Delete the email account in iPhoto

2. Quit

3. Re-add the email account (using the application specific password)

That's it.

Frustratingly the 'Quit' step is required. I did this multiple times with multiple settings and it all just ended with an error about my internet connection (which is fine) - until the Quit step!

For reference, the smtp outgoing is 'smtp.gmail.com' and the port it '587'. Your username is your full email address e.g. name@gmail.com and the password is the one generated by your gmail account (if you are using two step).

This is definitely a bug, 100% Apple at fault. It can happen with any email account regardless of vendor. Also, though it may be necessarly to delete with some email accounts (I can't vouch for all of them), most do not require a deletion. Everytime I've had this happen (and it's happened A LOT), all I do is quit iPhoto, reopen it, and try again, and it works fine.

The annoying thing is if you had put a lot of work into the email, because it doesn't save a draft, you have to do everything over after restarting iPhoto.

Boo Apple! You really failed on this one, and it has not been resolved over a year now.

richsadams,

I tried that, but it wouldn't let me. I even tried selecting all, copying and pasting into an email in the real email program. Also a no-go. Great idea, it just didn't work.

Interesting. I just tried it and no problem. You can only copy/paste the text of course, not the image, but it works fine for me.

Guess if it doesn't work for you, you could try composing in TextEdit or Notes or something. A pain, but at least you wouldn't have to start over...I know how frustrating that can be.

Best of luck!

Terence, I always do. Nothing has been done about this, and no reply. I think that is just a "feel good" menu item; I don't think that anyone really reads the feedback.

I can assure you that Apple does in fact read the feedback. I've been contacted by them twice and participated in a couple of trials to resolve things (not this particular issue though).

I wouldn't expect a response though...for all of the reasons you can imagine.

Hang in there.
