IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

The fact that deleting a plist file solved my problem completely indicates that for MANY PEOPLE this is merely a software issue.

Same problem as you guys.

No volume slider

Sounds menu works fine

Volume buttons not responsive

Tried cleaning dock port

Works with headphones

I deleted the plist file and voila. Everything was back to normal. So I highly doubt that this is a hardware issue. Maybe it's the software making the hardware over sensitive?

OK. I was told by the guys at the Apple store that moisture had got in to the phone causing the docking tabs to oxidise and a short has since happened. I use my iPhone lot when jogging so it's a possibility. Just wondering if any of you listen to music whilst working out?

They are telling me that i need to apy to replace the phone. i live in Bangkok and it's more than the $149 you guys are being quoted!

This *****!

All because deleting the plist file solves the problem doesn't indiate that this is merely a software issue. The removal of the plist file also removes functionality of some accessories (as mentioned in the tutorial videos on YouTube) and it would be my guess it will specifically removes audio functionality of accessories that route audio away from the phone. Deleting the file most likely simply disables this functionality.

It maybe that something in the 5.1.1 update has changed something so this problem can occur more easily, but the fact that so many have reported that throroughly cleaning the dock connector resolves the problem shows that it may well be a hardware issue as well — or indeed dust or water damage which has shorted something.

My guess it maybe a combination of the two.

For sure. Apple store told me water damage yet nothing was wrong until that update which I coincidentally updated at apple store! Glad I didn't buy a new one like they tried convincing me too and I am finally getting some answers here! Same thing I've heard in all these posts, no sound, no volume bar and no ringer up/down bar!!! Grr

5 day old iPhone 4s brand new out the box. Came with IOS 4 speakers worked fine. Updated to latest IOS 5 as you do, and speakers do not work!!

Tried all the things people mentioned including the toothbrush and no luck!

iPhone has Definatley not had any water damage!!

The is clearly a software fault in the latest update!

Apple please investigate and resolve, otherwise this iPhone will be changed to a Samsung Galaxy!!
