IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I have been having this issue way before the version 6.0 updates came out. The volume bars would disappeare completly and go silent by itself. Not something I could stand to deal with anymore after this continued happening for several months now. So I finally decided to go to the Apple stores genius bar. First thing the Tech noticed was the corrossion on the docking chip. Any damage to the docking chip that is not manufacture damage is not covered by warranty which I had to find out the hard way. That being said he told that it is more than likely the cause of all my issues but told me that he would try to restore my 4S to factory settings and push for a more thorough Firmware up date. It took all of 10Mins. This solved my volume issue for about a week now. Then i decided to not pay attention in my car and place it in a cup of coke. So my phone is now perm. on silent which *****, but I will be getting the Iphone 5 here pretty soon so it doesnt even bother me anymore.

Hope this helps.

Go to settings, general, accessibility, assistive touch (turn on). A small box will apppear with a white circle on your home screen. Click "Device" and You'll be able to control the volume using the touch screen. You can drag it and movd it around your screen. You can also go back to settings and turn it off after you adjust the volume if you dont want it there anymore.

I just got a brand new can of electronics duster with the long red plastic nozzel the kind they sell at Staples or other office supply stores). Using the can I blew directly into the port on the bottom on my iPhone 4s. The volume control came back! This was my second time trying the canned electronics duster. This time I had to stick the nozzel fully into the port. I also went back and forth across the entire width of the port several times. I must have dislodged some dust. I don't think there was any corrosion in the port, just dust. It worked! This is worth a try if all you have is some dust in your port.

SOLUTION FOUND *FOR ME!*

hey guys! i came in this thread about 30 minutes ago with my sound not working

i read up and found out that YES cleaning your sensor on the bottom of your phone, does help. although it didn't work for more than a second for me (the sound problem would return). so i blew in the headphone jack really hard then i blew into the bottom of my iphone! it helped for probably 2 minutes then it returned. i just kept blowing on the bottom REALLY hard! like youre blowing up a balloon.. i'm pretty sure i drooled a little bit in there and it started working again ahahahah. now i'm listening to music on my iphone 🙂 GL! probably will have to get some cleaning alcohol or a little bit of water (LITTLE BIT! LIKE TINY DROOL SIZED LITTLE BIT!!)

If you do not have a dirty headphone jack as suggested in previous posts, I can tell you with all certainty that this is a a docking connector issue.

I was given my 4S for free from someone who upgraded to a 5S and it came with the same issues everyone is describing. No volume bar, rintones worked, nothing else did. The problem would go away intermittently, but never reliably.

The 2 right pins of your docking connector are either dirty, or damaged, which is making the phone think it is in "dock" mode.

I did all the cleanings recommended but the "fix" wouldnt stay "fixed", so I bought a new dock connector and just this second replaced it...works 100%.

So if your issue isnt fixed, and you are comfortable around very very tiny screws, that is the real fix.
