IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I also had this problem on my 4s running 5.1 , after trying all the Credit card tricks and docker swaps with some luck for a few seconds the volume come back. But then I try blu-tack , just a small pea sized piece gently pushing it in the charger slot and pulling it out quick. Not smeering it right in. And now it works like brand new. I don't know if this method was posted previously, cbf reading 20 pages of posts

Blu tack for the win!

I had the same problem origionally described. I tried a full restore, and it didnt work. I was fiddling with the SD card reader for my iPad and plugged it in to my 4S, I got a "this device is not compatible" message. Then I went into music and te sound bar was back and adjustable once again. The phone must think that something is plugged in until it actually has something plugged in and recognizes its an error.

Hopes this helps.

I'm having the same issue. I have a 4s and a little over a month ago I updated the software to 6.0. Yesterday while watching YouTube, the volume just shut off and I thought it was just an error on the video. Then I realized that my music wouldn't play either, but my ringer still worked so I knew there couln't be anything wrong with the speaker. I also noticed that when I tryed to play my music, there wasn't even a volume bar to adjust (and appeared when I put my head phones in), so there had to be something wrong with the software or maybe my phone was just having some random freeze/crash kind of thing. So I reset it and everything worked fine. But this morning it happened again so I tryed to reset it, and that time it didn't work at all and I noticed the clicking on the keyboard stopped too. I read and tryed a few different stradegies to fix it on here, including the credit card, tooth brush/pick on the dock sensor, sound on/off...pretty much everything and nothing worked. So I finally decided to try resetting it again....this time it worked. I'm going to see how long it lasts, but I really think its something to do with the software. My dock connector wasnt especially dirty either. I never got the message "device not supported" or whatever. Also, if the the phone thought it was docked, the ringer shouldn't have worked and the volume bar would still appear too right? So, yea. I think its a software issue, especially since the problem didn't start until after the update.

After very long agonizing hours I have figured out a way to fix it it is nothing to do internally. At least that's not the situation with my phone. The quick fix solution is to go to Setting>General>accessibility>Assisstive touch>on From there you have to click the Assisstive touch icon that appears on your phone screen tap device volume up or down. That was the solution for me just let me know if that helped.

I really wish people would stop posting here whout reading all the messages above. You're only making it difficult for everyone else solve their problems.

THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED, AND FIXES HAVE BEEN FOUND

...and they are nothing to do with Accessibility or any other settings... or bad karma... and voodoo won't help you either!

Please read previous posts.

Please people, do not post any more comments, not even "thanks it worked". If you read only a couple of pages and then post your own comment you're only burying the solution and hiding it from others who need to find the answer. This issue has been done to death!

Summary:

There are actually 3 issues identified in this thread. Two are a hardware problem, one is a software problem.

Hardware issues

Either a dirty or broken connector. Solution: gently wipe inside your phone's connector socket (or possibly use a compressed air canister, or just blow), or replace your dock or docking cable. These posts may help you:

Software issue

A bug where some apps (including some alarm apps that use "background alarms") do not hand back proper control of the music sound channel to the iOS system, which in turn thinks there is still music playing and therefore assigns the volume hardware buttons to music volume. Solutions: either wait and see if it clears itself after some time (hours or days), reset your phone (hold sleep + home buttons), or open a game or app that uses sound, use it for a while, then close it. This post might help you:

Come on people, leave this thread alone. Please.

I'm glad that the thread has managed to resolved your issue, but I still have this problem and none of the previosuly advised fixes have worked for me. So please bear with me if I still want to try and find a solution to my problem

As previously posted, the behaviour of my phone seems much more like a software problem than hardware, since it can be consistenly triggered and cleared, plus no ammount of connector cleaning has made any difference. But having wiped my phone and then rebuilt it as a new handset with a different itunes account and apps, I still have the problem. So I'm at a loss to what to do next.

In that case, please consider posting only if you have found a different solution from the ones already mentioned above. There really is no point in having 1 million "I have this too" or "I cleaned it and it works" or "yes I agree" type posts, when the one golden solution for someone will get lost in the middle of it. If you have tried the solutions above and nothing works, consider looking elsewhere or taking your phone to Apple. If you solve it in a radically different way, hopefully not involving voodoo, cleaning or Accessibility settings, then please post to help others with this problem.

PLEASE PEOPLE, FOR THE SAKE OF FELLOW SUFFERERS, SEE THE SOLUTIONS ABOVE FIRST

If that doesn't help, search elsewhere. If no luck, go to your nearest Apple Store.

Please don't post anything else here other than a very different solution that you have proved works (hopefully repeatedly).

On behalf of all solution seekers, thanks!

It isn't the update. It is a bug in iOS it self. What I did initially thinking that the device had water damage was a liquid damage clean up on the device. Which did not fix the problem. I thought that maybe the Audio IC had some corrosion and was shorting out. It seems to be a short in the charge port though. What I did was took a charge cable that wasn't plugged in to anything and while the phone was playing some music I plugged it in and then unplugged it. And low and behold it works. I got all volume and volume control back. If you need any more help on stuff like this please visit my website or send me an email to get the web address if this doesn't post.

Okay, so I didn't finish reading all 350+ posts, but I am having the exact issue! I can't be 100% sure when it happened, but I can only assume that it was after the latest software update - IOS 6.1.3. I called and all they could tell me was that it was a software problem and I should restore it. I've tried that 3 times to no avail...did anyone get it to work again or do I have to by a Blackberry?
