IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I just encountered this problem as well, on a 4s running iOS 6.0.1

Searching a few hours for a solution, and trying everything without any success, I was just about to give up.

BUT...then I found a small tip somewhere, that solved my problem completely: Go to Settings --> Music, then turn 'Sound Check' on, then off. Voilá, speakers working again, volume control working, everything as normal!

I must admit that i'm not completely convinced this is all you need to do. I have really tried anything else described in this thread - except from the jailbreak/deleting file, that was my final solution. But resetting the phone, cleaning headphone-jack, cleaning dock connector with a toothbrush (it really needed it I admit!), free'd the 'sensor' under the docking pins and so on - nothing helped until the very simple 'Sound Check' fix! Wether it's a combination of fixes or not, I just enjoy my phone working again :-)

For anyone interested, I'm pretty sure this problem began when I started using a new set of AirPlay speakers. I was playing a game on my iPhone shortly before using the speakers, with sound from the phone. Shortly after, I 'paired' my phone with a new Bose speaker via Airplay, and listened to some music for a while. During this, I connected my charger for the phone, as I was running low on power.

When I turned off the music, I wanted to play the game again, but then realised that there was no sound - either from the phone or the Bose speakers. I quickly realised that I only had 2 different output in my 'airplay' menu: the Bose speaker system and the 'Docking Port'.

For that reason I think the problem is indeed a software bug. I have yet to reconnect my phone to the speakers again, but will update with additional info if the problem returns.

I don't know about all of you but I actually had this problem too with my iPhone 3GS and I was just having it with my iPhone 5. I know this may sound like I am stupid and you have all tried this already but it just fixed my problem which it sounds like everyone else's. I've found when I pull my phone from a docking station my finger hits that button above the volume buttons. Although it looks like its going the right way it was actually in the middle. I clicked mine back and forth a few times at my sons direction and I now have my volume back. I know I never touch that button for anything but It worked for me! I was blaming everything and everyone for this issue but that's all it was. Hope it helps you!

Sorry to rain on your parade folks, but the 'sensor' identified in the earlier posts isn't a sensor, it's the water damage detector sticker. If you get water in there it turns red so as to tell Apple that your warranty is invalid. There's one in the headphone port as well. That's why someone further up this page reported a red 'sensor', they must have got the phone wet sometime.

I expect it's actually what someone else reported, random bit of conductive material on the connector, and in getting down into the sticker you are dislodging that at the same time. Either that or there is some component beind the sticker, but that seems unlikely.

Anyway, I have this problem now on my iPhone4S with IOS 6.0.1 and none of the above fixes solve it. I'm pretty sure it's software related as well, as if I leave the phone locked for a while the problem goes away. But exactly two seconds after I open the music app it re-occurs, with the time delay being consistent each time.

That doesn't sound like a flakey bit of hardware to me.

Well I can confirm that clearing out the connector doesn't fix my problem (although clearly it does help some people). My issue is defintitely software.

I don't actually use a dock, only my apple power lead (no cheap third party leads) for charging. But I do have an Apple compatible amp with a USB socket (I don't normally use it as it also does Airplay). So last night I plugged my phone into that, played a song, then unplugged the phone. Bingo, problem solved and 'dock connector' mode had vanished. I played around with it for a while and it stayed fixed.

Sadly though, I then plugged it into the charger, and the problem immediately came back, but I was able to clear it again by plugging it back into the amp. I left the phone overnight and it was fine, but the problem came back again when I plugged it into the charger this morning (and was cleared again using the amp).

Crucially, I'm using the same Apple supplied USB cable both times, i.e. I'm taking the same cable out of my charger and plugging it into the amp. It consistently clears the problem when plugged into the amp, but creates it when plugged into the charger. So it's nothing to do with the cable, or my dock connector. I've also used more than one charger, so it's not that either.

I'm 99% certain that my issue is in software somewhere. Something has become corrupt and is somehow mistaking a charging lead for a dock, but then not recognising when it is unplugged (as there is no dock to remove!). No idea where this has come from, I never use plug in audio devices, only bluetooth or airplay. Still, I have a workaround of sorts for the time being.

Next step for me is to reset the phone, but I'm holding fire on that as I upgrade to an iPhone 5 next week anyway, after which I was already going to re-build the 4S as a new handset. So there seems little point in mucking about with it now. Once I've rebuilt it though I'll report back on whether than cleared the problem permanently, for assistance of others who can't fix this problem with a toothbrush!
