Retina MBP - visual glitches after returning from sleep

On the new Retina MBP (using the highest res setting), I'm noticing that there are significant visual glitches (ghosting, persistent blocks, lack of redraw, etc...) upon returning from sleep.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Well, setting some suspect apps to 'open in low res' made things better, but not perfect.

But, I have found that setting energy saver preferences to never put the display to sleep solves this for me.

This significantly cuts your battery time, but it's better than constantly dealing with the glitches.

BTW: Here's how I can make it happen almost every time:

Set energy saver preferences to put display to sleep in 1 minute.

Open all my 'normal' apps, one or more of which - I suspect - cause the problem.

Put the MBP in screen saver mode and wait the 1 minute, till the display turns black.

Wake it up - voila: the glitches are almost always present.

Note: I'm set up to require password for screen sleep and screen server. Not sure if that contributes to the issue.

This is a cross post from:

This is happening to me too. Once the macbook goes to sleep with the lid closed for a few hours, upon waking, I get this everytime. I dont have to reboot though since it seems to be resolved (temperarily) by toggling the resolution in the "displays" system preference.

I sure hope this is a software issue because taking this thing back is such an inconvenience. Is there an Apple engineer on here that can comment if I should hold tight for a future fix or return the laptop?

> they're blaming it on "apps that haven't updated to support the retina display".

Yeah, they asked me to remove a Tuxera NTFS driver.... Really???

They were also suspecting VMWARE stuff, and wanted me to remove/uninstall VMWARE too. I haven't put VMWARE to use yet, so its not a big deal, but it is something else to do.

But I have needed to switch screen resolution a few times today, and that seems to work around this screen problem.

I too faced the same burn in/ghosting problems along with the glitches and artifacts displaying after resuming from sleep. I talked to an Apple Care rep yesterday about the problems. They had me reboot my computer and do some other tests, and nothing seemed to help the issue. So, they set me up with a replacement product that should ship to me soon. I sure hope some of the problems with the new rMBP are software issues that will be resolved with Mountain Lion. This is my first Mac so I'm disappointed to some degree. But glad the rep I spoke to was very helpful.

Having exactly the same issue.

I was just demoing it to some friends and waking from sleep gave exactly the same sort of glitches that are referenced here. To be clear, i'm not talking about ghosting, burn-in or anything just seemingly software graphical glitches.

The only things I'd had running that time were Chrome Canary (could be the issue I suppose) and Safari and iTerm2.

I was running in the highest selctable resolution setting but moving to the 'retina' setting cleared it up for now. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time in a week I've seen the issue so it's definitely not every time.

I'll track this thread for a bit longer but will contact apple care if I don't hear anything. I'm also going to try leaving it in the retina mode for a bit to see if that helps...

Dear neiled

I know exactly what you are talking about ......why and how ......

the reason being there seems to be software drivers issues between Nvidea and intel , this issue occurs when the system in sleeping mode ( meaning when the system in idle mode and shift from nvidea to intel graphic )

the temp solution : disable automatic graphic switching and you won't have this problem anymore

could you please refer to this link and report the manufacture date of your machine ..

I also have the same problem of screen tearing (or "a blocky display if you will) when the rMBP wakes from sleep. I did a clean install and did not install any third party applications. The problem still persisted and can be repeated consistently when I let the screen saver to activate and then the screen go to sleep.

Not sure if I should return the machine or wait for an software update. Naturally I would prefer the latter. I can be contacted by Apple for further information.
