One last thing, I've been reading about the Chrome bug with the HD4000 driver, and it seems related to the graphics acceleration.

So one thing worth trying if you don't need any graphics intensive apps is to switch 3D graphics acceleration off in your parallel VM's video configuration. You'll end up with a basic desktop (no Aero) but productivity apps should work just the same and it might be more stable as it's unlikely to call much of the acceleration features of the HD4000, so hopyfully will avoid the call(s) that causes the bug/kernel panic crashes.

I'm trying this (with Flash installed in the VM) and will report if it seems to be an acceptable workaround until the bug is fixed.

Hi Manni,

I've uninstalled Flash this afternoon and had no crashes since (tempting fate) then.

I used to use BootCamp but it had it's problems as well, I really am sold on the VM route now and for me Parallels is king - I'm going to try and get away with removing Flash for now, what do you do in terms of Parallels setup:-

Processors = 1 or 2

Memory = 2GB or 4GB

Graphics = 256MB or 512MB

What surprises me is the pure lack of other Parallels users with the same issues, don't you think ???

Thanks

Mark

As I said, Flash is not the culprit, it's just one of the common software likely to require graphics acceleration. This is why the issue happens with Chrome on the MAc even if you don't use Parallels.

So although not using flash in the VM makes it less likely to happen, it can still happen if you launch any software using graphics acceleration (this means part of Windows itself, like Aero). So even with Flash disabled it is likely the VM will crash again.

I use 2 CPUs, optimise speed in Windows, I set aside 8GB of RAM (I have 16GB), I suggest you use about half of your available RAM so that you don't run into issues with OS X itself.

I have set aside 1GB of RAM for the GPU, but you'll be fine with 256MB if you don't use games of graphics intensive apps like photoshop etc.

The main option to switch off is 3D graphics acceleration, because that's what allows parallels to access the GPU directly, hence cause the crash.

I have disabled it, and even with Flash enabled I have used the VM all day without any crash.

So my advice is to switch 3D graphics acceleration off in the parallels video config until Intel/Apple provide a new HD4000 driver, and use all your software normally including Flash.

I'll report if I experience a crash, or in a couple of days if I haven't.

I guess there are less parallels users with a new Mac than Chrome users, which is why it's been reported as a "chrome bug", but Google has done the same (disable graphics acceleration in Chrome) to solve the issue until Intel/Apple release a new driver.

Also the Parallels users are probably going the "uninstall parallels/repair permissions/reinstall parallels", reinstalling the OS, replacing the hardware and expecting help from the Parallels support...

You can't from Apple, but you can buy a 16GB kit from Crucial (UK) for about £135. They are very good, and it's easy to select the right kit (just enter you mac model and they will show you the available upgrade).

As you can sell the original 8GB on ebay, the cost of the upgrade is minimal and the performance gain is important if you use more than one VM, or if you do lots of graphics intensive work (photoshop, video editing) on large files.

Otherwise, 8GB is the sweet spot as 4GB for OS X and 4GB in the Windows VM is plenty for most apps.

Just make sure you do a complete memory test with Rember and a full hardware check with the Apple diag - I think it's command D (for Diag) while booting - to make sure the RAM is working as it should. Crucial will replace it with no questions asked if it's defective.

Yes it is, this is why we are trying to find workarounds until Intel/Apple release a new driver for the HD4000.

Google has released an update for Chrome/Flash which doesn't use graphics acceleration

Disabling 3D graphics acceleration in the VM configuration in parallels seems to work as well for VMs if you don't need too much GPU power.

All the native MAC graphics app (like games or video/photo editing apps) are likely to be affected until a fix is released, which hopefully will happen soon now that Google has confirmed the issue and logged a bug with Apple. Hopefully Parallels will do the same to put more pressure on them.

Hi Mark,

Glad it helped. Your crash might be due to something you were running on the Mac side if the mac app was calling the faulty HD4000 driver. Make sure you update Chrome if you use it in OS X. I haven't had one single crash since I disabled the 3D graphics acceleration in my Bootcamp VM config, even with Flash installed, so it seems to help re stability even if it's not ideal (performance hit & eye candy).

The parallels support team are hopeless. They kept trying to get me to reinstall parallels and repair permissions... When I mentionned this partial workaround, they marked the case as resolved and I had to insist to ask them to confirm if their developpers have filed a bug report to Apple (like Google did for Chrome) to make sure it puts a bit more pressure on Apple/Intel to release a fixed driver. I haven't heard back from them, but I won't let them close the case until they have confirmed they are taking action with Apple, which is the only way to solve this (unless they release a version of parallels which doesn't access the specific graphic routines causing the crash, but that's unlikely).

I'll let you know if I find any better workaround/solution, but hopefully Apple with provide a fix soon, unless they are enjoying causing embarrassment to Google...

Regards,

Manni

Just to let you know that Apple has released today an update for battery life and USB issues. Although it's probably not connected to the HD4000 issues we're having, I have re-enabled 3D graphics acceleration, and even with Flash installed I haven't had a crash since.

By the way, if you can, try to raise the video memory up to 1GB, it might mitigate the issue. I have allocated 8GB of RAM to my VM, and 1GB to the video memory, so if it's a memory leak it might take a bit longer to happen.

Worth installing the update anyway, I'll report here if/when I get my first crash...

Bad News !!!!! 😠

I didnt get round yet to enabling the 3D in Parallels, I was going to do it later..... however I did install the MacBook Pro update thsi morning, well 10 minutes ago see below....

As well as crashing the Windows VM Blue Screened, its seems a fix has created another break maybe as there is no mention of HD40000 now 😟
