Macbook Pro retina squeaky noise

I've just noticed a squeaky noise in my Macbook Pro retina. When you press the bottom lid you can hear it. It sounds like rusty small springs. My old 13" MBP never made this sound but I know there are springs on the motherboard to keep the distance between the lid and the board. Is this something someone else is experiencing? I mean if my old $1199 13" Macbook Pro didn't have this noise although the same type of springs, shouldn't my Macbook Pro retina $2199 be free of this noise too? I know that this will probably not give me any problems in the future but imo a computer for $2199 shouldn't squeak when you have it your knees and it's quite annoying.

Here's a picture of the springs on the motherboard

I experienced the same problem, and found that the OP was exactly right - the springs were the culprit. My first rMBP had an overall creaking, cracking, popping, grinding sound when I would pick it up and move it around. It was very unsettling and felt cheap. I had the bottom cover reseated, but the problem went away. But after a couple days, it was back. I exchanged it for a new computer, and found it had creaking/snapping sounds in different places, but still present. Frustrated, I ordered a pentalobe screwdriver online and did some investigating of my own. After removing the bottom plate, I pressed on the springs (as seen in the image on the first post) and could exactly replicate the sound. I mean, exactly the same noise. It seems as though the springs were rusty, grinding, not oiled, or simply malfunctioning. Nevertheless, the problem was absolutely caused by the springs and nothing else, without question. I returned that machine and am now typing on my third rMBP. No problems whatsoever thus far. This thing seems rock solid, unlike the previous two. I wonder if the manufacturing process is getting slightly better with time, and if the first ones off the assembly line were simply....less good.

This computer has a premium price tag and you should accept nothing less than a premium product. I encourage anyone experiencing the slightest issue with their computer to take it in. Apple customer service is top notch, and if you are not 100% satisfied, my experience is that they do their best to make you that way.

I have the exact same problem !!! It's really upsetting, I just got mine and been treating it like a newborn. To pay so much money and have it sqeak when moving is really unsettling, it seems like a tiny issue, but getting a new car you don't want it to rattle !

I may wait a week to see if it settles as the it's brutal going into the apple store after Iphone 5 came out...

Hey Guys,

Here is the real reason for that squeaky noise, its the battery, YUP I am 100% positive its the battery, there is that black shrink wrap that covers all the battery cells, and apple uses glue/adhesive to stick that cover around the battery cells. What happens is that the corners of the battery cells at the bottom sides on the right and on the left are not sticked perfectly so they contact with the bottom lid cover of the MacBook Pro Retina and whenever there is any kind of presseure against the bottom cover then it touches that plastic battery cell cover and voila comes that noise, its not the springs, its not something serious, its just the battery cells plastic covers exactly on the botttom parts ( right side and left side of the trackpad towards the bottom ). There are 4 battery cells covers with black plastic and when the cover adhesive gets loose then you hear that noise if you carry / push against the MacBook Pro Retina. I took my 3700$ machine apart myself to verify that issue 🙂 and I hope that helps you guys. Thanks

Mine does it, too, but only at certain times. The first half dozen times I noticed it I couldn't recreate it, so I thought it might be in my head. Now, though, it does it pretty regularly. It also doesn't recognize a great deal of my trackpad input, especially multi-touch gestures and two finger right click (and yes I am up to date on all software, including the trackpad fix).

I still love Macs and hate PCs, but it seems that without the obsessive attention to detail that was a defining characteristic of Mr. Jobs Macs are becoming more and more like PCs; i.e. they are not that well made and do not "just work."

Oh well, the Apple Store gave me a discount so I got a rMBP15: 2.7Ghz, 16GB, 768GB flash with AppleCare for $2,201, including tax. I guess I shouldn't b**** too much, as they have the best customer service of perhaps any company, and if I didn't dread the idea of reinstalling everything I'm sure they'd exchange it.

i've got the same problem again with my second rMBP.. I'm really frustrated because i paid so much for it.. so im going back again to the reseller because i'm not happy with this at all.. that noise under my trackpad when there comes a little pressure on it is so frustrating .. and when i press a little on the bottom left or right side it makes the same noise

I have the same problem, expect my resellers are not really useful. They claim that apple has not set up responses to this problem yet. I was told unless and until Apple annouces the solution they cannot do anything to this. My crackling sound occurs when I

-Move my Laptop

-open close lid

-rest my palm on the right side

-carry my laptop

-click on the trackpad (that is quite rare)

This is really upsetting and quite disgusting, the fact that a problem like this would be ignored. Its not for all

MBPr's though 2 of my friends have ones which are solid as the air, no sound. MBP's before this were rock solid, even abused mbps aren't loud as my brand new MacBook Pro Retina.

I have had the same situation as you. I have had my own replaced 5 Times. its ridiculous. The laptop creaks like crazy from even the slightest touch. i dont understand why apple hasnt recalled the item. Its ridiculous that a 3000$us machine makes these kinds of noises. And yes people you have read that correctly. This is my 5th replacement macbook pro retina display. i am typing this on it and its creaking as i even type this message.
