Retina Macbook Pro WiFi and Bluetooth issue

The number I posted are if my Bluetooth is off.

If my Bluetooth is on and transmitting:

Signal / Noise: -72 dBm / -81 dBm

My internet at that point is completely sporadic. Loading google takes 20sec when it reaches.

WiFi:

Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.81.22)

Router:

Apple Extreme Base Station (mid-2007 version), Channel 11,

Bluetooth:

Being sceptical, I don't think Apple is going to fix that issue anytime soon.. Can I ask you if your Apple Extreme Base Station is dual-band? If yes did you try switching over to the 5Ghz band? If yes, does it change anything?

No Magic Mouse:

Signal / Noise: -18 to 19 dBm / -82 to -86 dBm

Transmit Rate: varies b/w 48 and 54

10.6 Mbps

With Magic Mouse:

Signal / Noise: -20 to -22 dBm / -79 to -84 dBm

Transmit Rate: varies b/w 24 and 36 and 54

7.0 Mbps

(5 tests; both Mac and Magic Mouse 2 feet from router)

@tinnnou: your S/N ration is not good, hense the extremely slow speed

how far are you from the router? Are there walls b/w you and it?

Yes, it is dual band and yes, switching over to 5GHz did appear to solve the issue when I use the higher channels so that's an option if Apple doesn't address the issue. However in N only (5Ghz) the AEBS was then unavailable to several other devices on my network so I set it back for the time being, until I have time to debug the system and figure out the best configuration for the whole network (The AEBS is currently set up in bridge mode, extending a 2Wire router that's broadcasting only in 802.11g)

Hello all, while I'm not as techy as all of you seem to be or have read every post, I may have some insight. I have also went through 2 previous MBPr (for various reasons), both with no issues regarding disconnects from my magic mouse, not even once! The first day I received my new MBPr (about a week ago) the multiple disconnects started happening. That's why I knew it wasn't the battery issue that everyone seems to claim it is. On another post, two other users realized it started happening after the most recent ML update. This would coincide perfectly with my issue, because while I did still have my old MBPr during the latest update, I held off on updating because I was sending it directly to an Apple Engineer who wanted the notebook in the same exact state as when the problems arose (screen flicker issues). Obviously when I got the new notebook in the mail a week ago, I updated to the most recent ML version and the disconnect issue started happening. First I thought it was the computer, but now feel it must've been the software update, due to the fact that two other MBPr user's had the same computer throughout the software update, and the problem started happening afterwards. It also seems to work for the original poster's story, that his previous models worked fine with the Magic Mouse.

I'd like to hear everyones thoughts on this.

Also, if there's issues with the tracking speed, you can download Magic Prefs to speed it up and also to more w/ your magic mouse. I personally use a 3 finger swipe down to bring out notification center.

won't be just ML version. I've updated the previous two I had (which had no slow WiFi due to Magic Mouse) with all updates immediatelly as the updates showed up.

The only difference with my 3rd (current) one I noticed is that it did not show any EFI update. Previous two did and I have updated that too.

Some significant relative improvement achieved changing my router (WRT54GL with Tomato 1.28 firmware) from channel 6 to channel 3.

Why channel 3? Using iStumbler, I found that it to be the most "quiet" channel around me.

(I am in an appartment building and iStumbler detects a whole 31 WiFi networks in 2.4 GHz bandwith around me!!)

- there are only 3 other networks on it, all with very weak signal (13-15% signal strength in iStumbler)

- there are fewest networks on the neighbouring channels 2 and 4.

- is the farthest from channels 6 and 11, which are overcrowded (60% of the networks around me in those two channels).

Before - on Channel 6:

9 Mbps: with Magic Mouse

13 Mbps: no Magic Mouse

Now - on Channel 3:

15-16 Mbps: with Magic Mouse

18 Mbps: no Magic Mouse

(position of my Macbook Pro is the same: 2 feet from router)

I advise you use either this method, or the one where you switch to each available channel and do 5 speed tests against your default closest server in speedtest.net.

Again, this does *not* solve the interference problem b/w MBPR and Magic Mouse, but at least might improve your speed anyway.

I also had like 6 rMBP over past months and none of them had any problems. Lately I received two new (same batch) and both are struggling a lot - I had to change the chanel to get any 'workable' speed. It has the firmware with *98.81.22. Can anyone verify that this was not a problem on previous firmwares?

Hello guys I have the same problem with my MBPr, internet over WiFi don´t work if I connect the MagicMouse over Bluethoot! This should be not normal for a 4850€ LapTop !!!

Does anybody know the reason for this problems???

What I can say you is my story about that (same problem of yours):

after many days of trying and searching on the web I spoke with an Apple care technician that said to me: "Frankly if you ask for a substitution it's not guaranteed that it will work since the problem is on the wifi board, and a software update will not make anything more than a patch that will only slightly minimize the problem)".

He also said, (and it's confirmed by my tests) that the problem is hardly reproducible since it depends on variables like the distance from the wifi router, the wifi routers in your neighborhood, your house etc etc.

I tried changing the wifi channel with only temporary relief from the palguing problem.

What you could do is switching to a 5Ghz wifi channel, but this way your MBPr would be the only device in your house to be able to access the wifi connection since all the others (iPhone, iPad etc) work only with 2.4Ghz.

You could link with an ethernet cable

What I did is refusing to accept to have paid 3200 Euro for a machine with such a nasty problem and giving it back to Apple (on the last day available for returning it)

I ordeded a non retina MacBook Pro.

It's quite sad that Aple is not saying anything about this, allowing a lot of faithful customers to spend their hard earned money to buy such a piece of crap.

It's like purchasing a Ferrari (I'm Italian), paying for it, and then discovering that the engine shut off at random time during the day...

And at Apple care (before I managed to speak with that sincere man) they say you something that sounds like, in the Ferrari metaphore: "Well you could use it just between 7pm and 9pm", or you could go along with a pair of cows to pull the car when the engine shuts off.

The wifi - bluetooth (magic mouse) problem is now global issue. Wat the Fcuk Apple is doing?? I know Apple is reading every single danm post we are posting now..

I as well called to apple help line in Singapore. I suppose I dont need to mention i too have linksys WRT54G router with 2.4GHz.

What apple staff advised me was that asked me to move the laptop using spot to the nearest to the router. LoL

also suggest me to buy the apple airport extreme base station for dual freq band. (Holy Cow)

Would that apple extreme base station really solve the problem cos I have other windows laptop only can operate at 2.4GHz?

I switched my (single-band) late-2007 AEBS to 5 GHz only and it solved the issue for me (my workstation is upstairs probably 30 ft and 2 walls from my router, not a strong signal), but had to switch it back to accomodate a couple of devices on the network that can't handle 5Ghz. I'm considering upgrading the AEBS to dual-band, but am holding off to see if Apple addresses the problem via a firmware update.

Yes an apple extreme will solve the problem and it solve it for me at home, my Retina is connected on 5ghz bandwith when other computer or wifi peripherals (1 powerbook 2009, on smart tv samsung, nokia lumia phone, iphone, ipad and galaxy tab) are connected on the 2,4 ghz. Everthing is working fine.

But it only solve the issue at home... I'm working 80% of the time abroad and personnaly i've never seen a public wifi ressource on 5 ghz, every hôtel, restaurant, airport etc. are providing connection through 2,4 ghz....

Imagine the dialog:

- "Excuse me Sir,"

- "Yes?"

- "Can I go behind the bar?"

- "??!??"

- "In fact i bought that marvelous retina laptop, and i've to be less than 2 meters from the antena, to be able to work with that marvelous magic mouse, and your antena is there just behind the bar"... :-)
