'Magic' mouse does not scroll

This so-called 'magic' mouse came with my iMac. It simply does not work; I've followed every piece of advice & guidance - have gone into the settings & ticked all the relevant functions - but the 'scroll' function does not exist. I roll my finger down the mouse, exactly as in the guidance illustrations - and absolutely nothing happens. All this does is bring up a scroll bar on the right-hand side, so I then have to move over & use the scroll bar - something I've not had to do for years with my Windows PC & wireless mouse with a wheel. Is this seriously how this mouse is meant to work? I.e. it simply activates a 1990's style scroll bar?! If so I think this is a bit of a cheek; Macs are not cheap; they could at least have supplied it with a proper functioning mouse. Especially given that it also comes with tiny stunted keypad with some crucial functions missing. I will now have to replace both of these - at additional expense!

Hello:

is it supposed to actually scroll down the page like a wheel would do when you rub your finger along the top;

It scrolls up and down when you rub your finger vertically. It will do the same for horizontal scrolling when you rub the finger horizontally.

Sorry about the acronyms - I sometimes "assume" things - and you know what that does. 😉

SMC=system management controller - reset like this:

PRAM=parameter random-access memory - reset like this:

Both of those sometimes fix odd problems. Neither operation will harm anything.

You last responders slay me. It doesn't matter a cluck what Apple calls the mouse, the one with the *trackball doesn't always work. Cleaning the *trackwheel, trackball or whatever you want to call the giz is a good idea, but other than shaking it upside down while manipulating the *trackwheel, trackball or whatevermI don't have an idea HOW to clean it. At least I can spell "rinse."

I followed the suggested route ---- thru library to extensions, and thru systems to library to extensions, but there IS NO USBOverdrive.kext file for me to trash --- it is NOT listed! Now what do I do? I have had this mouse for 5 or 6 years, never had an issue at all. Just malfunctioned today --- no scrolling at all. Tried all the fixes listed here. Running OSX 10.9.5

Hi all,

I tried everything suggested above (except delete the overdrive file) and nothing fixed my 3yo magic mouse, which had worked without issue until it all of a sudden decided to stop scrolling. Setting were fine etc.

I just disconnected it through the Bluetooth menu, left it on and gave it 10sec to reconnect itself. Voila - scrolling works.

T'was good reading about all these other potential fixes... I've not tweaked my mouse settings.

I found this post because it was happening to me. I realize this sounds like a ridiculously dumb solution, but it worked for me. Someone had suggested restarting your computer, so it made me think to restart the mouse at least. I shut off the mouse (blew a little dust off in the meantime) for a minute or so. Turned it back on and it worked. Not saying it'll work for you, but it did for me.

Good luck!

Much like the original poster to this topic - my mouse was not scrolling with touch but I assume because he was able to scroll with the 1990's scroll bar as I think he referred to it then his mouse was being recognized by the computer but the touch scrolling wasn't working. I am certainly no IT expert - however for those searching for an answer to this - I did not find anything that might explain why it used to touch scroll and now would not but yet i could still move the mouse with it. When i opened the system preferences for the mouse I noticed that the battery indicator said 14%. Ironically my keyboard was already popping up a low battery warning. I simply changed the batteries in the mouse and now it works. So there is obviously a low battery level that will at that point no longer accommodate touch scrolling power needs. With new batteries, mine is functioning 100% now.

My magic mouse is now working as expected. In addition to the plist file mentioned above I had to also remove the plist file "com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse" on the same folder. Obviously I am not sure if this is what fixed the issue, but after I removed it and rebooted my macbook air my magic mouse is now back with all its advanced gestures. In addition, the mouse that is show on the screen when the mouse connects/disconnects resembles the magic mouse. Previously, I would be shown a representation of a much older Apple mouse. I hope this helps somebody out there struggling with these annoyances.

I've been experiencing all sorts of issues with the bluetooth connection of my magic mouse to my macbook air since the update to 10.10.2 .

I've tried a number of different approaches but the one that did the trick was turning Wifi off.

Sadly, for some of us, the 10.10.2 update that was supposed to "solve bluetooth issues" actually brought problems that weren't there before.
