How long will it take for apple to respond to my request for free mountain lion?

I have emailed Apple and waited a few hours, am wondering whether I filled out the form wrong and wasted my chance? Wondering how long anyone else had to wait?

Thanks!

I want to thank all you people for a very entertaining thread. It reminds me of that old Saturday Night Live skit with William Shatner, where he tells the Trekkie Convention attendees that they need to "Get a Life".

Seriously, all this waiting and agony for an operating system download certificate that seems to be ruining so many lives. And all for the cost of a large pizza. Just pony up the $20 and save yourselves such a heartwrenching tortured existance. Big DEAL. How did you afford to buy a Mac in the first place if $20 is such a chore to come up with?

Yeah, I know, "It's the principle of the thing", right? Meanwhile, I'm happily running Mountain Lion on my two Mac Pros, while so many of you are ready to call lawyers and staring hopelessly at your mail inbox. CHILL!

I know I'm going to catch heck for this post, but I just couldn't take it any more!!

I would estimate that Apple servers are trying to serve up a few million copies of ML right now, so it's understandable that they might bog down for quite a bit. Maybe that should have doled it out by first letter of last name. But I don't think Mr. Zimmerman would want to wait 26 days for his update.

And think about those poor Asians!

Think about how lucky you are to have a Mac in the first place, while all those poor starving people in 3rd world countries are only able to run Windows Vista on their laptops. It makes me want to cry.

For those that bought their macs from places other than the apple store, I can see why it might take longer. However! you would think that apple had figured out a way to detect when the serial number matches a purchase after June 11th and automatically gives you the code. How much time is wasted in somebody reviewing it! Perhaps they are trying to throttle downloads so the app store doesn't crash. Either way, I'm one ****** off monkey.

I guess what amazes me is that they are having issues getting out codes. They know how many computers that they have sold in 45 days. They should have been prepared for a code with each one. I know not everyone who bought a computer as applied for a code.

I think that they are trying to see how many people they can trink into buying instead of waiting.

So, I called apple yesterday, about 16 hours after i applied online... The guy said 'oh i see you're approved, check your spam folder, etc, etc, so after he decided that i did not receive the email, he said hes going to send it again, and i should receive the email within 1-3 hours, and if i did not receive it, to email uptodatesupport@apple.com..

So i emailed them saying this...

Hello,

Early this morning I requested my free upgrade to mountain lion, I called apple support, a little over an hour ago, and they said my code was resent. I still have not received this code, and I am really itching to try mountain lion. (along with millions of others i assume)

They instructed me to email you if it has not arrived, and i am doing that now.

<name>

Serial Number: <numbers>

<email address>

MacBook Pro 13 (2012)

Hopefully thats all the info that you need.

Thanks,..

So, i receive this email back, about 16 hours later

Thank You For Choosing Apple

I called apple back, and said somethign along the lines of, did you guys actually read my email, or did you copy some random answer from a script, and he assured me, apple does not use scripts.

This support fellow, told me he did not know why the previous tech told me it would arrive so soon, and that i should expect to wait 72 hours for my email to arrive, because the 'servers are getting slammed'

I then asked, if their mail servers and file servers are on the same machine, and he told me no.. ( i dont understand how it takes 72 hours to receive an email )

So i guess i join the countless others who are waiting...

This is my first Mac, and i've already been through the 'google chrome kernel panic issue' and now this uptodate issue ;(

Pretty bad first experience..

It's been 36 hours now. The OS X update website said it would take up to 24 hours. The Apple Care rep – who confirmed that my registration had been approved – said that it could take up to 72 hours. My fear is that they will close shop over the weekend and that we will get the code Monday...

Yeah, it is not the end of the world but it is very annoying, since I'm waiting with a bunch of installs for my new computer, and actually want to start using it.

I echo your sentiments. I just bought my first Mac too. First, I had a mild panic attack about getting zapped by static electricity whenever I used my MBP when charging; and now I'm mildly worrying about why my content code is taking so long to get to me. I know it's not a huge deal when you think about it.. but for someone who hesitated for ages before shelling out big bucks on their first Mac, it's a disappointment.
