Forgive me if this observation has already been made but I have managed to get the ethernet port working - after a fashion...

It seems ok if the connection uses afp... Here is what I have found in sequence:

From cold start:

  1. Attempt to connect to a NAS using the "connect to server" facility - NO JOY
  2. Attempt to connect to a NAS via the built-in browser - SUCCESS (falls off chair)
  3. Makes second attempt to connect to NAS using the "connect to server" facility - SUCCESS

This was on Sunday. I have been using GoodSync successfully since then to synchronise files...

Regarding the connection to the Windows desktop, there is something going on... I discovered that Mountain Lion has a built in FTP server... After enabling it, I can connect, using ftp, the PC to the Mac but all I can see is the root directory of the currently logged in user. I am unable to navigatge deeper....

In the vain hope that Apple are even awake enough to hoist this in, I hope there is somthing here that may help others that are dealing with this Apple cockup :-))

Cheers

Steve

Connection to my desktop, however is still only a dream :-(

It seems these are dark days... I suppose this whole issue makes the old addage "the higher they come...." horribly true... This does not help you much but I hope the ethernet / usb work around is enough to get you going.

I did have one small "oh bugger" moment after installing the SMBup app... it still did not work! Until I remembered something about having to set permissions (goodness know why) on the hard drive - now it does work. This was not something I had to do before ML..

I am very new to the world of self employment but what I do (photography and videography) will mean servers eventually... I was thinking Mac....but now I am not so sure.

Here's hoping for an enlightened change of attitude from (maggoty) Apple :-)

Cheers

Steve

Well boil my bunions.... Maybe Apple took a leaf out of Oracle's book and decided to allow common sense to rise above a more arrogant attitude...

Judging by the occasional use of the eponymous 'smiley', I gather you are at least a happier bunny now ? 🙂

As for me, all things Apple took on the appearance of a farce... SMB may now work on my Mac... It is a shame that the silicon coil of my Mac has just exited this world 😟 so until my new one arrives... Still, I can't complain - It has been in continuous use for the 6 years I have had it...

Here's hoping to no more Apple faux pas....

Cheers

It's all too late for me... I've made the switch to windows!!! All my mac pros now default to windows through bootcamp and I'm shocked how much better C4D and AE work... These will be our last macs.

Really sad but you'd have to be blind not to see the writings on the wall for Os x pro users...

SMB fiasco, leaving ethernet out of a major update, out of date Open GL support, QuickTime API issues with AE and the general lack of any clear intention on Apples part to support us. I'm trying to run a business in the most difficult business climate in living memory... You just can't rely on Apple anymore.

So sad as it is... After 20 years... We have turned our back on the mac! And we're not the only ones...

Bloody ****... Some things, it seems, never change. The capacity to learn from our mistakes (as well as those made by others) is a virtue that seems to have blind spots in the corporate world... There must be countless examples out there of successful businesses that have begun to tread the slippery road of "we know best" and "only give half an ear to the customer".. Apple, I suppose is just the latest example.

What beggars belief even more, is the capacity to disregard the writing on the wall... in Apple's case on their own forum!

Having a foot in both camps has been a valuable asset for me... I hope your venture into Windows proves to be no less advantageous...

I guess I'll be much more eagle-eyed when my new macbook pro arrives... There are some elements about its construction I do not like but I am happy to ignore them if it serves as well as the last one... I use it primarily for the photography.. The Windows 7 platform is for the video work...

AE? As in After Effects?

At least they don't remove any critics of Apple from here as they used to...

Yes After Effects, you can't export quicktimes over a network when using mac os x. It gets to 2gb and stops! This has been an issue for over 2 years and they have done nothing! Adobe tell me it's the API apple have given them. Apparently even Disney have complained about it... Causes havoc with our workflow... This is computing issue that's from 10 years ago which reappeared in the 64bit build of After Effects...

Cinema 4D is a 3D package and uses Open GL to increase the speed of the viewport as you work... Even in Mountain Lion Apple have only implemented 3.2!!! 3 years behind the version available on windows... Runs smooth in windows...

They can lie and boast about the new MacBook pros graphic performance... Fact of the matter is, it uses old graphic drivers and old open GL support. No direct x11...

I used to be the biggest supporter of Apple and their hardware. No doubt they are well built machines and I have always been willing to pay for that premium. But when you see the operating system start to lag behind windows that's when you have to question whether your willing to continue to pay!

Sure windows is a massive pain in the butt, but there is no doubt it is a better platform for pro apps now. We just bought an over locked i7 workstation, with a 4gb graphic card for £2500 and it wipes the floor with my 12core £5500 mac pro... Just look at the prices Apple are trying to still charge for the completely outdated mac pro!

One thing I just couldn't stomach anymore was being taken for granted. They think pro users are suckers and won't bother to vote with our feet...

They couldn't be further from truth, I'm pretty well connected into London's post production and design industry and everyone I know is making the switch now...

It seems I have 'bumped' into someone operating in an industry I have just started in... or at least part of what I do is allied to it...🙂

To have your insight into these things is hugely beneficial.... so thank you for your insight so far. My previous engineering career ( 35 years of electronics and allied with IT) has proved seriously useful to date but it lacks the detailed knowledge of the industry I am now in... only experience can remedy that!

So far, the work I have done has been reasonably straightforward on the video fron and has not excercised the hardware too heavily. As far as the PC is concerned, I have always built my own.. So far, the current one is doing me proud... I had to do some tweaking with the hard disk arrangements to suit Premiere and a recent graphics card replacement but that is about it.

Well, if a Rubicon has been crossed, I guess you have done it.. with many of your following if I read you post right... I suppose I should could my self lucky that my albeit nascent business uses both platforms so using Windows has never been 'scary'..

"Most difficult business climate"... I think I can go along with that! Still, it is early days and as difficult as it is, I love what I do and can't imagine going back...

Sep 20, 2012 2:30 AM in response to Stennes

There is no more satisfying job... I love what I do also... Been doing it for 13 years now...

And Apple had been at the forefront when I started back in 1999. The released FCP and bought Shake... Had render boxes... Servers... Fast machines... Great graphic cards...

Now there so called Pro machine is two years out of date and the Macbook Pro is not a 3D or video machine! They killed Shake and the least said about FCPX the better...

Windows is no doubt harder to use and administer especially coming from a mac background, but it does work! Mind you I used to have terrible trouble with Vista! 7 has been great and I have found it a pleasure. Not sure about 8 though... Looks like they are making the same mistake of trying to implement mobile device functions into an os!!!

Microsoft will still have the pro version on 8 though I assume, and this is what Apple need to do. Have a pro version of os x that gives us the freedom we need to create. We should be able to have the latest graphic cards, network with whatever we want and use the full power of the machine we have paid for!

I know at least two of the big 3 post house in London are moving away from Apple, and it won't be long before everyone else does.

Think of a very practical everyday situation we find ourselves in. We have a big project starting, we need an extra work station... Do we A, buy an expensive out of date workstation with an operating system that does nothing to help us create the work we require... In fact it does nothing but hamstring us... Or B, spend half the money for a machine that lets me freely create whatever I want and frees my hardware to its full potential? Easy answer isn't it? As long as they are well built PC's with 3 year warranties they are fine. Don't download **** and torrents and you'll be fine...

Their ridicolous paranoid nature offers no long term planning to a tech lead industry. And Tim Cooke seems to be a bean counter not an innovator...

They should just fess up and admit they are a consumer electonics company now... Let us all move on...
