Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

Here's a cut'n paste of the answer I got from an engineer today:

"Hello,

engineering confirmed that there may be unresponsiveness with Logic Pro 9.1.6 and 9.1.7 in Lion and Mountain Lion when plug-ins displaying meters or analyzers are used.

Usually closing the plug-in windows or turning off the analyzer will improve the GUI response.

You can also use a single plug-in window, and use the Show Channel Strip and Show Insert drop down menus in the plug-in window to choose that is displayed.

The issue will be more likely fixed with the release of a software update.

For now there is not any other work around or solution to apply".

Great to hear from Apple on this but it's a band-aid. Unfortunately the fix is kinda like talking to the sales guy after upgrading the engine in a Ferrari... "Trust me it runs fine when you turn off the air conditioner, stereo, headlights and any other electrical... Don't go over 30mph and be gentle when you push the gas pedal.....It runs just fine."

At least we know there's real problem. Sounds like Apple knows there's a real problem. We'll just have to hope and wait for a real fix. I should hear back from the Logic department in a week or two. After my 5.5 hour ordeal yesterday they've recieved and have sent my working files and tons more of my info. A senior manager is taking the info to the "engineers upstairs" ...as she put it.

I'll be sure to post any revelations when and if they contact me.

Here's what I heard back from the senior support person at Apple's Logic department:

"I got a response back from our engineering team. As of right now they are currently investigating this issue. I will let you know if I get any other updates or workarounds. As of right now it was just suggested to make the adjustments then close the plug in window before playback."

Judge for yourselves...I'm speechless.

I guess they're trying.

Keep calling in and report the Logic Lag Lion complaint folks. They don't use these discussion groups as a benchmark for when something serious needs to be fixed. Call and keep calling. No change ever happens when your only b***hing to your buddies. I'm just as guilty in the, "would you like some cheese with that whine" department. This has flat out become a problem that is affecting my daily productivity. Which in turn affects my paycheck. Not fun.

Yes, I wonder the same things. And MadDog15, you're right. This is a horrible bug that truly should be taken care of as quickly as possible. It is avoidable only by limiting software usage. That's not acceptable. My big fear is they are going to roll out LPX and consider THAT the software update. Personally speaking, I don't update to any major new version of software until it's gets to two or three revisions. And actually I am not sure I will want to update to LPX.

It's great that they say they're working on fixing the problem but why can't they be more approachable with their end users on their Pro software?

There's no need to have to send emails to their company chief and go through the exective relations departments, or multiple numbers of users having to go through various support people/engineers etc like a mouse in a maze to prove that there's a major particular issue with Logic. Considering this has been an issue since Lion came out last summer, it does show how important the pro market is for Apple yet they continue to sell the product in the App Store.

I guess no one in Apple actually uses Logic Pro on their laptops/desktops in the office otherwise the chances are they would have noticed the problem. I couldn't imagine them doing the following (taking a good 5 to 10 minutes to complete):

1) Apple Support enginner gets a brand new MBPr laptop from the special store cupboard with new toys.

2) Switches on laptop.

3) Log onto network and find the network share with Apps installed.

4) Installs Logic Pro then updates to 9.1.7.

5) Open Project, load a couple of channels.

6) Put the EQs into high res mode.

7) Hits the space bar.

8) Tries to stop playback by hitting the space bar numerious times before getting angry.

9) Sends meeting request to Logic engineer mate who he bumped into at Brunch to pop over and check out this bug.

Fingers crossed...

/just saying. 🙂

You're absolutely right. Apple has a very odd way of doing their work. For the most part it works, but in the case of professional apps (which they have acquired from companies that had been totally devoted to their software) I think they need to develop a little more flexibility and better communication with it's users. That said, it HAS gotten better. I remember back when I was trying to install Logic 8 I misplaced the booklet which had my special purchase number, but of course did have all the other packaging AND MY EMAGIC DONGLE! Speaking to tech staff was a miserable experience. I was treated like a thief. Now things are much friendlier and the tech staff, in my opinion, is 100% better. I'm grateful for that.

Hey guys. So my gift certificates came in and I was finally able to purchase logic. After 2 days of messing around with it, I think I can honestly say that I have NOT experienced the bug.

I'm sorry to ask this, but does someone have a recommendation on how to recreate the bug? I'd be happy to try and recreate it and send that data to Apple.

Thats why I was pushing so hard to get everyone to complain to Apple- because I'm certain that the bug exists, it just must be really insidious. Let's keep pushing and we can make Logic nice and stable so we won't have to keep hearing about Pro Tools! haha

I'm on a new Macbook Pro (pre-retina), running Logic 9.1.7 and Mountain Lion 10.8 (not 10.8.2)

Thanks,

Sabin

(Please note, that I won't update my OS to 10.8.2 to try and diagnose this, because I don't know how to go back to 10.8 without a big hassle, and from what I've read, the bug exists in all Mountain Lion versions)
