Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?

Hi,

I've just completed my first session in Logic 9.1.7 on a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 2.6 after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8. I got through it, but experienced the following new bug (as compared to running in Lion 10.7.4:

I noticed that if Logic is currently playing when I double click on a plugin in the channel strip, and then try to stop the playback (keyboard or by clicking the transport in the arrange window), I will get from a 5-45 second lag before the app responds and actually stops. No mouse or keyboard commands seem to work while it's hanging up.

Workaround: Only open plugin windows when playback is stopped, and then playing and stopping works fine (although maybe a little more laggy than in the former OS still).

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any better workaround ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Quad 2.66GHz, 16GB, 18TB HD / RAID

Okay guys!

I've also called Apple now and the guy that I talked to said that "Yes, I've heard about this problem and we have our engineers looking over this issue and and update/fix will be ready soon."

He wanted me to do some steps just in case and blablabla.. So I'm gonna do that just so that he will forward this even higher...

I'm also gonna e-mail him this forum thread so that Apple themselves will start looking here aswell.!

Cheers brothers and sisters! 🙂

"Will start looking"... :-)

If what you are presenting there actually is the theory that the Logic guys in Apple aren't even monitoring their own support forum re. the most discussed Logic issue in Logic's history.... well - it's an interesting theory which I'm 100% sure is wrong. Of course many - if not most/all - members of the Logic team visit their support forum, either from work or from home, to see how their work is received.

Remember, this issue was introduced not with a new a new OS version - not with a new Logic version!

Respectfully, ZXC, this problem first appeared with the release of Lion. If you read through the forums there are many folks complaining about it at that time, over a year ago. And yet every single tech person I spoke to in the last week (there were 4 or them) had no clue about this issue and needed me to prove it to them. Obviously they are not monitoring the forums. If they are, they aren't taking them seriously enough. Furthermore, it's a problem so basic and easy to replicate that it's pretty shocking that it wasn't discovered by somebody on the Logic Pro team first.

I know you meant: "Remember, this issue was introduced not with a new OS version"

Between the time it's taken for a fix (two operating systems and counting) and the notorious lack of communication from Apple.. no one know's if they're being heard, clear communication would've made all the difference in the world.

The new operating systems have nothing I need, fortunately my 2.5 yr old Mac Pro runs Snow Leopard and Logic 9.1.3 just fine, others aren't so Lucky, new machines will only run the latest OS and the App store only has the most current Logic, some customers have no choice.

Most new users of Logic won't see the problem, I would be concerned about some other problems showing up with new machines.

There have been several errors of this type showing up over the past few days.

Well said Fredo. Well said.

I personally believe the disscussion groups are simply viewed as b***ch sessions by tech folks. As you said, this is not a brand new issue AND if you just launch Logic on Lion/Mountain Lion, start building a small composition, it'll take about 10 minutes to notice something is not right.

Frightningly, while on the phone with one of the five techs I spoke with on Sunday we were waiting for a process to finish so I casually asked, "So how long you been using Logic?" They replied, and I quote, "I don't use Logic Pro. I just trouble shoot it." That's probably not a good representation of the entire tech team but I probably wouldn't have devulged that information to a consumer calling for profressional help. Just sayin'

On your other post:

Lucky you Fredo! It takes a 60 track file to create the lag?! (Keep in mind I'm on a Brand New Mac Pro, Runs perfectly, Two 2TB hard drives, 32GB of RAM, 3.2GHz processor etc. etc. etc.) The lag starts for me with just 6 tracks (3 midi, 3 audio) and 1 EQ, analized in high res. This also was the file that I was asked to create while on the phone for the Senior Logic support person. Emailed her that Logic file also. She was forwarding the working file on to the engineers. I kept trying to reiterate, "The problem isn't with the working file." Even one of the demo files "The Numbers Game" from Apple, that installs WITH Logic, creates the Lag problem..

I know some people got it with Lion, some with Mountain Lion. Bt it came with an OS, and of course should not have been existing for so long, for those who have it. I can't recreate it here with 10.8.2 and 9.1.7 anymore. But others can. Apple needs to fix it, and if some of the tech support guys aren't are aware of the problem, they should improve the tech support routines. Several others have mentioned, weeks ago, that they have called tech support about the same issue and that their case has been escalated.

If tech support isn't good, or is good sometimes and not good other times, there should be a market for a 3rd part company to offer paid, proper tech support for Logic.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!

My new method helped!

I removed Logic Pro 9 from Applications and then emptied the trash bin!

Then I rebooted, re-installed Logic Studio 9 and selected ONLY Logic 9 to be installed and continued.

I then installed 9.1.7.

Open Logic Pro (32-bit at first), then remove all the unwanted plug-ins like all the Apple plug-ins... (I removed them).

Now, make a duplicate and right click, click on info and now uncheck "Open in 32-bit..." etc etc.

MAKE SURE, that Logic is set to Open in low resolution mode there aswell, right under 32/64-bit selection.

Always open in 64-bit now that you've made a fresh Logic installation.

This method helped me TREMENDOUSLY! 🙂

Make sure that you don't run the equalizers on high res mode. Don't push your luck!

Also make sure that you're only running LOGIC itself and preferable nothing else, that is not necessary for your project such as Re-wire ofc) and you should not be having this issue anymore.

There's still something clogging the full acceleration of RAM and GPU, but now I don't experience the problem until I open a super demanding project with a lot of metering stuff in it, but then I adjusted my settings in the EQ(could still do that) and pressed stop(nothing happened here though), right clicked on the Logic icon and clicked on the project with the little "tick" on, and every setting was done and the track stopped and everything was back to normal again! Try not to have the analyzation on when you don't need it and make sure that you don't mix plug-ins on the screen.

This should help you all, at least it did for me. I can finally start to catch up......
