black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

Jep, always after typing password and hitting enter.

One static i can observe is that it happens randomly, it takes different amounts of hardresets but it always works when os x asks if it should reopen all previously opened programs.

As soon as this box appears im sure it will load properly and it does not matter if i tell it to open the old programs or start fresh.

Well, since yesterday, I reinstalled GFXCardStatus and my Wacom drivers...

Strangely my machinew has not done this since, and I still canot nail down exactly why, there is no set of variables that seem to have a discernable effect. Hmm.

Well, I will report back if I find anything, but for the time being, it seems (temporarily) resolved. However, I also submitted a bug report to Apple linking to this forum post.

I do take comfort in that its a fairly common issue so likely nothing wrong with my spanking new machine 😝

Cheers guys.

this morning I had exactly the same trouble after a normal shutdown last night: black screen logging in my user.

I'm using an new mbp retina with ML installed as upgrade of Lion: I was NOT plugged in AC power and my default resolution in 1920x1200. I logged in my account many times before having this issue.

I do not now what exactly solved my probem but here is what I did:

1. plugged AC power in

2. logged into guest user and immediately logged out

3. shutdown

4. boot doing a PRAM reset before

After this steps was performed, I was able to log into my account even after 2 more reboots

Hi guys,

Exactly the same problem here. It really seems to be a software/firmware problem, because, when I get the problem, I log in my MacBook Pro from SSH, delete the "com.apple.CoreGraphics.plist" file in ~/Library/Preferences, the log in from my MacBook Pro and all work well.

Now, waiting for M.Lion or firmware update to get this fixed ...

Same problem here - brand new MBP with Retina, all working fine with Lion, updated to Mountain Lion a little less than a week ago and about 30% of the time get a black screen after logging in. Running at 1680 x 1050. I did think it was a HD problem as the first time it occured I had to repair disk via disc utility and then was fine. However still ocurring so obviously a grpahics issue - awaiting update.
