black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

thats how first level support works. They dont know anything and send you away. Only if you are persistent and can convince them of a problem they let you through to second or third base 😉

As i stated on the first page of this thread: everyone with the problem should submit a problem and contact support about this. Only if it "hurts" they will notice and not just send users away with a generic message 😉

if you have time to spare you could also contact computer news sites (maybe mac specialized ones) about this issue so they take it up with apple.

I got the BSOD immediately after upgrading my late 2007 MBP to Mountain Lion. Immediately took my laptop to the local genius bar where they diagnosed my problem as a nvidia card failure. Told me I could purchase a new laptop or fix my old MBP for $310. Wrote to Tim Cook. His assistant called me back to inform me that according to their technical staff it was just a coincidence and that there was nothing Apple would do to take care of me because it was out of warranty. I got him to check again only to have another call telling me that it was my responsibility. Looking at these other issues, Apple may be facing a class action lawsuit or at least a lot of lawsuits in small claims court!!!

Hmm, that *****. However, it may just have been coincidence that the card happened to fail at that exact moment, I think it's unlikely that a software upgrade caused the failure. Im sorry to hear it though 😟

I think the Black Screen after login on the Retina is a seperate issue though, it's definately not a card failure as the machine is still outputting, and upon restart is fine. From following this thread, it looks like a software or card switching glitch.

As a note to everyone else, I cannot understand why, but my Retina hasn't done it for about four days now, through multiple restart/shut down cycles. I have GFXCardStatus installed and the Wacom drivers I thought caused the issue, and auto switching is still enabled. Stopped just as quicly as it started. Odd.

To those who have Emailed/got support, do keep us posted 🙂
