black screen after login, Mountain Lion on Macbook Retina

I've been using Mountain Lion for a while, and regularly I get a black screen, right after the login screen (after entering the password).

Often I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.

It is not clear when or why it happens: it could be some 3rd party code (gfxCardStatus, CUDA 5.0 sdk, steer mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse driver?) or something else.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?

Just hang up with the Apple Support and it seems that it's really a software problem, but the laucnh of Mountain Lion is too close to have a known bug referenced to their knowledge base. I gave the case number of smartRaddish to the hotline too.

They advise me to make a reinstall of ML via the Recovery partition... I'll try this tonight, but, I really don't think that it will eliminate the issue.

To be continued...

I haven't seen it for a few days now, but the problem is I've done 2 things...

Did the boot into safe mode and changed the auto switch thing - and did the update from apple.

So, really not sure which one sorted it, but *touch wood* it seems to have done the trick. My laptop is usually off overnight, and seems to log in fine in the morning.

I'll report back if I see it again though.

The people who have this problem, are you using the program setresx?

I've restarted the computer 10 times without changing the resolution with setresx. Only in system preferences

--> No problems

I've changed the resolution with setresx to a higher res., then back to a lower res and changed the resulution back to best for retina in system preferences.

When I restarted then, I've got a black screen after the login screen 2 times.

I have a 15" Mid 2010 MBP and, after installing Mountain Lion, I'm getting the same black screen issue a short while after logging in. Disabling gfxswitch did not fix the issue but deactivating the automatic graphics switching in System Preferences eliminated the problem. It seems that the black screen symptom appears when the system switches from the Nvidia video card to the integrated Intel.

Apparently this problem manifested before for some 15" Mid 2010 MBPs like mine (I've got mine in June 2010). I never had this problem at that time. Hopefully Apple will fix it again quickly, as running only on the Nvidia card drains the battery too quickly.

I cannot agree with you more on the release date aspect.

Surprisingly I installed and updated OS X ML on the 30th and I don't recall this patch.

I reinstalled on the 31st (trying to get rid of the black screen).

Today (1st) I updated with the referred path and have not seen the black screen ever since (around ten restarts).

I can only say that apparently (and only apparently) it worked for me :-?

Hopefully this mistery will be solved soon ;-)
