I think for now you have to use some other software. If you have wifi, AirDroid is free and does a lot more (also reads and sends SMS messages from the Mac).
- Just search and install AirDroid from Google Play store on the mobile and click start.
- Open a browser on the Mac and go to the address specified on the phone screen (you can bookmark it in the browser).
- Click the small camera icon inside the app (on the phone) and point the phone camera at the Mac screen.
The camera recognizes and reads the large dotty icon, and automatically connects the two.
It is very quick and handy. You will see messages, videos, pictures.. all the contents of the phone (even the clipboard if you want to do copy-paste between Mac and phone).
If you are an advanced user you can also setup Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/ free for Mac Os) to create a web App for the mac that opens AidDroid. Just tell Fluid to open any link inside its panels in the preferences, type the AirDroid address in the "URL" field and you can even add an icon (you can download it from the Play Store web page of AirDroid, just drag the icon to the desktop and choose it in Fluid preferences).
Oh, and you can also setup the Mac to open the newly created Fluid app for AirDroid every time the phone is connected. You can do it inside Apple's Image Capture application. In the bottom left corner of the window (when device is connected) there is a small "triangle in a box" icon tht shows/hides opening preferences for your device. You can choose any app there. Just select "Other.." in the menu and browse to find the application you wish.
Yes, that's supposed to happen, but it's not for many (all?) of us on Mountain Lion. Thus the reason this discussion just keeps going and going.
This post is has so far been the best to outline the problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread/4152261?answerId=19965311022#19965311022
Just wanted to chime in here with a different datum...
I have a new Samsung S3, GT-i9300 Intl'l version, running an (unrooted) stock version of the Android OS (ICS 4.0.4).
Unfortunately Android File Transfer does not & never worked for me on Snow Leopard (Macbook running a stable longtime 10.6.8 system) -- I get either the "No Android Device Found" or "Could not connect to device" error, depending on whether PTP or MTP mode is selected on the phone. I tried all the various combinations of connecting phone first / running AFT manually, USB Debegging mode on/off etc.
I wonder why your setup works on SL & mine doesn't... My MB won't run ML, so can't compare it on the same HW.
As further data, Kies (version 2.0.0.12095_7) does work fine for file transfer back & forth (both external SD card and internal storage), as does Eltima's SyncMate (V4.0) utility to sync iCal & Address Book data.
Reason I don't simply use Kies & forget about AFT is that Kies interferes with another useful utility, Easy Phone Sync, a Samsung-sponsored that seems to be the only game in town for fully syncing music (including the playlists themselves) from iTunes to the S3 (the utility works for me only if Kies is not installed on the Macbook).
I'll look into the various wireless options, like Airdroid everyone's been recommending; if I do find a solution, I'll report back to to this thread.
Incidentally, anyone know what I need to do to cleanly UNinstall AFT from my Mac? Beyond the app itself, what other files does it install were?
Hi guys
I've just downloaded the latest version of Android Transfer from the link : http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
and installed it on the Mountain Lion then connected Xperia Mini and it worked very well.
Good Luck
You can also use Backup & Transfer application on your Android mobile. Take the Backup of your files. Its going to store in SDCard/data/backup/.sbf.
You can copy these files into your PC using a Cable or using Bluetooth.
Anyways I prefer Android Transfer which syncs your contacts, SMS, photos, songs, Call Logs, etc with your computer.

Sorry Intion, but no, Android File Transfer does Not work, and the link you sent no more than another one.
My Mac is running Mountain Lion and I am stuck with my HTC One X+ which I cannot update. Yes I know that most of you in this thread have a Galaxy or a Nexus but other Android phone do have the same issue!
I found several "solutions" on the net but none worked so far for me and I do not want to root my phone for that, not geeky enough! However I am ok to download some miracle maker software if needs be and do some extra manipulations on my phone (sorry english is not my mother tongue, I am from Europe).
And Mac is not likely to fix any problem with anything related to Android soon! I do like my Macs but sometimes, this "I am the king of the (IT device) worl and I **** on you" becomes really ...annoying. One of the reason I quit with Iphone too.
Ah yes I forgot the "politically correct" from the US and the do not use some words...Hope you got my meaning !
So back to AFT issue, only solution I found is to use Snow Leopard again on my Mac to use AFT: fortunately I have it on an external disk.
At the moment, if you are using Mountain Lion it won't work.
Not sure about Lion, but Snow Leopard and older cats should work.
I'll check it out. You shouldn't need an app, though. I've always just connected my Android phones to my Mac using the included cable. They appear as (usually) two external drives, one is the phone and one is the SD card. I've been using Android phones for years and never even knew this app existed. I just drag on or off anything I need to.
I have the same problem with Galaxy Nexus 4.1.1
It worked fine when I still had lion, but as soon as I upgrade to mountain lion, it no longe recogize the device
On the Android device it keep blinking from "Connected as Media device" to "usb debug mode" and it keep repeating as long as the ubs cable is plugged in.
My big issue is I cannot access the external sd, something Nexus users can't experience since you don't have one.
I can get the internal one to mount using Android file transfer.
It crashes every time I try to access external sd.
The problem is within the Mountain Lion OSX, but as expected we are getting the usual Apple banter..."Its something with the device, or the cable, or something, its impossible for the Apple product to be the issue."
Meanwhile, everything can be accessed just fine on every other operating system, including OSX Lion.
Please fix this Apple, so your products can have the same function as your competitors.
Some extra observations:
- Google Picasa and Image Capture recognise my Samsung S3, connected as Camera (PTP), but show no photos to import.
- Kies no longer complains that my phone is locked when screen lock is activated, it just shows "Connecting.." indefinitely.
- After a few minutes of Kies sitting on "Connecting..", the S3 eventually displays message "Unable to find software on your PC...". However, Kies recognizes when I unplug the USB cable.
MacBookPro8,2; Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M; Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 (USB debugging off)
thank you, I can now lauch again android file transfer, but I still cannot create a new connection with SYNCMATE, this sync app was working fine. Now that I uninstalled KIES I can use AFT again, but it will be nice if I could use SYNCMATE, and understand why it is not workiny.
My usb cable is on, usb debug mode on (check), but when I want to create a new connection, syncmate still ask me to activate this usb debug mode. I think the usb cable works because my samsung is charging.
any idea ??? 😉
I use SFTP myself. But all theory aside, as a practical matter USB is still much faster for me.
I used Android File Transfer until updating to Mavericks broke it. I now use SFTP. The USB connection was not just a little faster, it was much faster.
That may be because the wifi hardware in my phone (Motorola RAZR HD) was not made optimal. But more likely it is simply the overhead of transferring data via wifi packets, while USB has no such restriction.
Regardless of the reason, transfers worked better and faster via USB. It is that simple.
I appreciate that we are all trying to solve this issue.
Yes, the maximum speed of 600Mbps on a 802.11n network depends on the capacity and number of antennas in a WLAN architecture.
We have to take into account the speed of read/write of the shared folder. If MicroSD it is pretty slow, with a maximum of 10MB/s on a class 10 card.
Why you do not use FTP instead of SFTP? Your machine loses his time to encrypting and decrypting files.
There is an app called SAMBA FILE SHARING at google play, have you already tried? I didn't because it requires a rooted device.
QuicksiteUSA
Your device is a Sansung and the issue is solved by the Kies solution. Unfortunately my device is not a Samsung, and there is no fix for me to use Android Fite Transfer, it simply does not connect my device in MTP, only in PTP.
For you, is better to use Android File Transfer, according to Lonny Eachus, it is faster.
I'm just doing it by FTP because it is the only way available to me.
