MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously

My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

gfxCardStatus will definitely help but I am afraid it will not solve your problem unless you are happy to work with the Intel GPU.

You should definitely get a Genius Bar appointment and ask them to run a video test (issue TS4088).

I assume your Macbook is not under warranty unless you have Apple Care but the "replacement program" will be free if your computer is positive at the test they have for that specific problem.

Here's summary of my problems:

1. Snow Leopard OS no problem.

2. Lion OS problem of occasional panic shutdowns with no message and a lot of tinkering to get it shutdown and restarted.

3. Mountain Lion OS frequent shutdowns at startup, every program and eventually made MacBook unusable. The only good thing was I was now getting error messages...

Here's summary of visits to Genius Bar:

1. Offer to fix for $400 and suggestion to reoad OS. I reloaded OS and it worked OK for almost a day, then started shutting down per #3 above.

2. When I went back to Bar 2nd time, their testing program shutdown and they replaced Logic Board and I had them replace battery. No charge for Logic Board. Funny, with new LB, my Apple accounts recognized my computer as a new one. Same with some programs I was updating or even using.

So far, no shutdowns and everything working great.

I upgraded to Mavericks (fresh install) and it still crashes. Bad thing is gfxcardstatus 2.2.1 doesn't work properly when switching to integrated mode only. Screen becomes buggy automatically even after sleep unlike past OS like Lion and Mountain Lion. I don't like gfxcardstatus 2.3 because it doesn't allow power source based switching.

Oh well I guess it's time to bring it to a premium Apple reseller. I'm from the Philippines so I'm not sure about getting a free logic board replacement.

I've had the GPU-stress issue for what seems like forever, with kernel panics everytime I forgot to set my gfxGardStatus to "Integrated Only". As you suggested I installed the latest Cuda drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cuda-7.5.25-driver.html), rebooted, ran a few video stress tests and didn't get any kernel panic! It's to early to tell if the problem is completely resolved or if it's "only" reduced the symptoms. However - it's a great improvement!

I've just found this thread. My 2010 15" MCP has been getting worse and worse and today has just crashed 4 times in about an hour while I'm trying to edit a video. As it was out of warranty I just put up with it but today, frustrated with the crashes, I decided to google to see if there was a simple solution and came across this thread.

I've just booked a genius bar appointment for thursday where I was argue my case that I didn't realise there was a recall for this model. Has anyone recently had success with having this issue fixed?

gfxCardStatus is the only software solution, I personally think this is not a long term viable solution because you always have to check that you are working on the integrated GPU, sometimes you reboot and you are back to dynamic and then prone to crashes.

I've contacted Apple and just returned the computer to an Apple care center that will replace the graphics card

What I dont understand is, if they replace it with the same modell, why shouldnt the problem still exist?

Yes, they were a tad cagey but eventually, after consulting with a manager, they agreed to fix it. I have to say, it's a bit naughty of them on something this big to only advertise the recall via the webpage. A courtesy email to all customers affected should be the order of the day. I don't visit the Apple pages very often and I would normally always miss any such announcements, which I did this time, too.

After trying to be the lucky one at the local shop here in Shenzhen, China, I went to a third-party repair shop. I had the graphic chip changed, Optical drive removed, SSD installed. Now it works like a charm.

Resetting the ram's seems to alleviate the problem. Installing gfxcardselector also helps a lot.

Anything that will stress the nvidia gpu will trigger the crash.

Hopefully your problem is solved.

I am using Macbook pro 2010 when i upgraded to Lion OS X. The black Screen problem first appeared when i was playing Mass effect 3 on my Macbook in windows 7 and then it started happening on Mac Lion OS X too. Then i tried something called underclocking using software MSI Afterbunner I actually Reduced the Speed of Nvidia GPU By half and the problem disapeared in Windows 7 even when i was playing games like Mass Effect 3 or Crysis 2.

Conclusion: I think its more related to overheating of Nvidia GPU which in turn causes black screen of death.

Solution: I think apple should release a Updated which makes sure that Nvidia GPU doesnot go over certain temperature.

Please let me know if this works for any one.

Hi all

I also had this problem with my mid2010 MBP and had the logic board replaced by apple as described above.

Everything working well now except the sound quality of the internal speakers is now TERRIBLE compared to pre-replacement. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also had sporadic kernel panics under 10.6.8 caused by the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.

Updating to OSX 10.9 did not bring any improvments.

I went to to the Apple Flagship Store here in Berlin. Some tests did not work but hung up without error msg. The genius could not say why. The critical TS4088 passed multiple times. So no free MB replacment possible. 😟

I have no idea why this happens to my mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15".

I really don´t understand why the gfx card works for hours with steam games with heavy gfx load but crashes very often with iPhoto and sometimes Safari operations!? iPhoto always switches to GT 330M even if gfxcardstatus tries to stop it doing so.

Maybe the video RAM is faulty? I sometimes get effects like this:

It does not happen very often. Should I change the MB for approx. 450,- €?

Any help or hints are very much appreciated!

For me it was a faulty RAM slot (the slot closer to the keyboard) so only using the good slot prevented any crashes. I sometimes got 3 beeps on restart which was the sign for memory issues also. Haven't had many issues since.

I can confirm that it worked for my mbp, they changed the entire logic card invl graphic card for free and it's all sound and good now!
