MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously

My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

I upgraded to Mavericks (fresh install) and it still crashes. Bad thing is gfxcardstatus 2.2.1 doesn't work properly when switching to integrated mode only. Screen becomes buggy automatically even after sleep unlike past OS like Lion and Mountain Lion. I don't like gfxcardstatus 2.3 because it doesn't allow power source based switching.

Oh well I guess it's time to bring it to a premium Apple reseller. I'm from the Philippines so I'm not sure about getting a free logic board replacement.

Nov 11, 2013 3:25 PM in response to tim_ksa

I also had sporadic kernel panics under 10.6.8 caused by the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.

Updating to OSX 10.9 did not bring any improvments.

I went to to the Apple Flagship Store here in Berlin. Some tests did not work but hung up without error msg. The genius could not say why. The critical TS4088 passed multiple times. So no free MB replacment possible. 😟

I have no idea why this happens to my mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15".

I really don´t understand why the gfx card works for hours with steam games with heavy gfx load but crashes very often with iPhoto and sometimes Safari operations!? iPhoto always switches to GT 330M even if gfxcardstatus tries to stop it doing so.

Maybe the video RAM is faulty? I sometimes get effects like this:User uploaded file

It does not happen very often. Should I change the MB for approx. 450,- €?

Any help or hints are very much appreciated!

Does this thread aply to the 17" because I'm experiencing some of the same issiues.

And even worse, after 3,5years it destroyed the apple 500GB hdd. Noise, scratchy and tikking, the drive dissapears.

So I bought, without thinking or searching google, a Hitachi Travelstar 5K1500 the biggest 2,5" 9,5mm I could find. Works like a charm. New OS from dvd, all updates, updated for free to Mavericks again all updates.

..... it lasted a couple of days😠. A 100,- euro hdd gone bad.

Same noise, same problem.

The first screen distortion happend within a year. Never thougt that it would be a hardware thing but driver thing and waited for updates. Al lot of updates came, I never paid for updates so OS stopped at 10.6.8

Mean while I trried a lot of things, with 500GB on sata>usb cable on winXP and 1,5TB still mounted in 17"MBP 6,1.

Gparted did start with MBP 500GB, also the 500GB sata cable win7 combo booted Gparted, first partition broken and !-mark.

Gparted didn't start with MBP 1,5TB, error something with "no screen"?!

Trail Stellar Phoenix mac recovery on windows, mentioned first block unmounted or something like that. And freezes so no further info, rapport doesn't safe.

Hardware problem, change hdd😢. The drive is a RMA, hope to hear within 14 days.

Strange old os battery normal, in Mavericks attention required😕.

More hardware problems perhaps?

Running os X from a usb 128GB drive, slow but does the (websurfing) job.

I am with a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro

2.66 i7

4gb ram

Nvidia Geforce gt 330m&Intel HD Graphics

its been above 4 years my mb was working fine untill i decided to do a clean install of Mountain Lion and started facing this Crash Issues,

within this week i tryed to reinstall snow leopard and lion and tryed to overcome this crash issue but noting worked(couldnt reinstall snow bcaz it wouldnt boot for me)

Havent taken it to a showroom or repair centre since i already figured that this issue is due to the nvidia graphic card that came with this mb(but planing to once i save enuf money for a new repair)

for now i am on 10.7.2(lion) and my fix to this issue is gfxCardStatus 2.2.1

how to ;-

1 - install it

2 - switch energy saver in system prefs to battery saver and select Intergrated Mode in gfcardstatus from the menu bar

Note ;-

once you restart mb and try selecting Intergrated mode your screen with have white lines and garbled screen issue

so bfore restart i quit gfx and uninstall it(move it to trash)

after restart the gfx menu dosent come up on bar so i reinstall it from a extrnal usb or drive or redownload it from internet and install it back nrepeat set 2 from how to notes.

Hope this works for some one out there.

Dec 12, 2014 10:56 AM in response to tim_ksa

I have been fighting this for about a year now. I took mine into the Genius bar back in early 2014 and they told me nothing was wrong with my machine and there was nothing they could do. I and a huge Apple fan, but disappointed that they would not help me and now they have posted that they will not even look as of 12/1/2014. sad

Dec 26, 2014 5:46 AM in response to tim_ksa

I'm also having this problem and unfortunately it only started in the summer, meaning my laptop is no longer eligible for the free fix.

My laptop's got some other problems too and I've just invested in an iMac. My question is, if I wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of Snow Leopard, will this help? 'Cause I'd really like to keep my laptop for as long as possible for its portableness. I won't care about having the latest versions of everything, I'll mainly just be using it for word processing and the internet, with the iMac as my main computer whilst at home.

Jan 12, 2015 7:07 AM in response to Rezam88

So my issue at this point is not being able to run a second display. Going in and disabling automatic switching and then using the GFX card status seems to work find for me when just using my laptop. Problem is you can not plug in an external monitor when your gfx is set to "integrated only" which for me is Internal HD Graphics and not the Nvidia Geforce 330. Any ideas?

Now that we are outside the free repair window, what are people paying to have this repaired?
