HL-2270DW printer: Wireless setup problem

I recently bought a Brother HL-2270DW laser printer. After downloading the drivers I am able to print just fine via USB. The trouble is, I would much rather connect to this printer wirelessly. The manual says to utilize the CD that came with the printer to enter the appropriate settings... unfortunately, the CD says the operating system is too new and to refer to Brother's website. After doing this and downloading their BRAdmin Light (a little app designed to adjust basic printer setting), I found that BRAdmin Light will not recognize any devices, even though I am connected via USB and can even print.

So the basic issue is, how can I set up this printer for wireless operation given what I have mentioned above?

Much thanks!

Alex

Hi DanielArg,

I have a Time Capsule 2TB Model A1409 just like you. It took me 3 or 4 attempts to get my Brother printer to connect---it was my fault as I kept missing key points, particularly in STEP 3. Also, I needed to alter a few of my Network Settings in Systems Preferences. I have attached several screen shots so you can see what worked for me. Please let me know how things turn out and do not give up....You are your Brother's keeper...LOL

This is my addendum to the instructions from the Amazon review quoted by jld63 earlier in this thread.

Note: I'm on a MacBook Air running 10.9.2 (Mavericks).

Regarding Step 1: The driver I found on Brother's website appears to be more up-to-date than the one available from Apple -- If you're on Mavericks, you may want to take a look at the Brother site here: http://goo.gl/qCkdb0 (Be Advised: URLs often change; if this link isn't good anymore, you'll have to do a search).

Regarding Step 2: If you use the Brother website referred to above, you only need to download the "CUPS Printer Driver" and the "Wireless Setup Wizard".

One last tip.

If:

  1. The WLAN printout says "Connection: OK". (Get printout by pressing Go button five times).
  2. The printer status on your Mac displays "Offline" when you try to print something.

Then:

Your fix is probably as simple as going into Printers & Scanners, deleting the printer, and re-adding it. (Note: Make sure it says "CUPS" for your driver.)

Thanks for the extremely thorough directions (with screenshots--so helpful) in setting-up a HL-2270DW printer.

The Brother software did not work at all for me and was a nightmare to say the least. Not using a CD or Cable worked much better.

Amazing directions--two thumbs up! 😀

Please Note:

If your network requires a password, make sure you enter the password were you see the words:

Passphrase or Paraphase (Under WEP Key selections)

Also, make sure you to have the correct Encryption Mode and Authentication Mode otherwise it will not work correctly. My attempts failed the first 2 times, because I had the wrong information.

I'm using 10.7 and my wife is using 10.8. I found the following (different) instructions from a thoughtful amazon reviewer for a simple way to set up wifi connection with the 2270dw. These instructions worked on both of our laptops:

As with so many tech units, it's the setup that is the hassle. I am a Mac person. Sure, I've used PCs at work and when I have to but I much prefer the Mac OS. The first indication that there was trouble was when the included setup disk refused to install the printer drivers because they were outdated. There was no link to update, no advice, nothing. So I went to the Brother site and after digging around through their horrible UI, I found the necessary updated drivers, downloaded and installed them. But that was only the start of the hassle.

The user manual is horribly confusing, to say the least, when it comes to setting up the wireless networking (at least to me). I suggest you ignore everything in the manual regarding networking. Let me give you Mac users some hints so you can avoid the wasted time and frustration I experienced:

1. After you've unpacked the printer, installed the toner and paper and printed a test page, go to the Apple web site and search for Brother printer drivers. Apple has all the latest drivers for download free.

2. Download and install the drivers.

3. Insert the CD that came with the printer and open the 'Utilities' folder. Do NOT use the 'Start Here OSX' icon.

4. In the Utilities folder, click on 'Wireless Device Setup Wizard.'

5. In the next window, Setting Up Wireless, click 'NO' then 'Next.'

6. In the next window, click 'checked and confirmed' then 'Next' (you don't need to read the stuff in that box).

7. In the next window, make sure 'Temporarily use USB cable' is selected, then click 'Next.'

8. Connect a USB cable from your computer to the printer.

9. In the next window, you will see the setup software searching for wireless signals in your area. Make sure your network is visible, then select it.

10. In the next window, input your router's wireless access password twice as requested. (Note: if you have an Apple Airport, do not enter the Airport PW, but your wireless access PW. If they are the same, no worries.)

11. Unplug the USB cable to the printer.

12. Click through to 'finish' and you are done!

Your Brother is now set up to print wirelessly and you can put it anywhere you like.

I found the post by jld63 the most useful, particularly where it advises in step 5 to click "NO" when asked about "setting up wireless", which is totaly counterintuitive, because setting up the wireless is the whole intention. The next steps allow you to do it. But I had to do a few other steps to make it all work:

(1) I had to restart my machine and the printer for the printer to become visible in the setup wizard (2) I had to "add" the printer in the systems prefs box, and delete the older listing of the very same printer. I think it hangs onto its old settings, but when you add it again new, it comes in with new settings. I copy here jld63's steps:

For those having issues with the Brother HL-2270DW printer going "offline", the solution is to set the IP address to "static":

1) delete the printer

2) restart computer

2) reboot your router (as I learned the hard way, this is an important step)

3) reset printer (turn on holding Go, release, press go 6 times)

4) wait 1 minute

5) configure wireless using SETUP as outlined in this thread; BUT, before quitting the webpage based configuration, DO:

5a) click configure TCP/IP, and under boot method, select static.

6) add printer, selecting the CUPS driver

Hopefully this solves your offline issues.

There is a way to use Airport Utility to quickly get a Brother 2270DW (and most other newer Brother wireless printers that have WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) on your WiFi network. The Apple routers are all set up to use the PIN method. No CD, Setup Wizard, browser, USB cable, or ethernet cable needed:

1 Open the latest version of Airport Utility (in the Applications > Utilities folder) on your Mac. The one I used has a graphical representation of your network.

2 Click on the icon of the router nearest the printer and then select “Add WPS Printer” in Base Station menu. That menu choice will be grayed out until you click on the router. In my case, it was an Airport Express that I use to extend the range of my Airport Extreme base station.

3 Meanwhile, restart the printer by holding down the GO button while turning on the printer power switch.

4 Keep holding GO down until all the LED's light up. You can let go when the Ready LED turns off.

5 Now press GO six times. The LED should light up as it resets and restarts the printer.

6 Back in Airport Utility, select “PIN Method” from the Add WPS Printer dialogue box.

7 Back at the printer, poke something sharp into the network card trigger hole at the lower right of printer on the back side.

8 Hold it there for about 4 seconds. A light above it will flicker. After a bit the printer will print out a PIN code.

9 Quickly enter that in the Airport Utility's Add WPS Printer PIN field and submit. If Airport got bored waiting, just select the PIN method again.

After Airport Utility thinks for a while, you will be good to go. In the Printers and Scanners system preference pane, the printer will now show up as a nearby printer and it will be added to the printer dialogue box.

This is September 11, 2015. Had a brand new , BUT OLD, (2007???) Brother printer 2170-W ( never opened) to set up with my brand new MacBook Pro. Retina, 2015. It worried me, but thanks to you, and another poster whose name I'll look up, it got done. The most important thing that was missing, was using the PRINTER PIN code PLUS how to get the pin code from the printer. I had used an older 2170 for years and loved it. But wanted to keep it with my pre-Mavericks computer. Next goal is a Brother 3170 CW.

Apple care had no idea how to help with this project. They never got as far as the pin code or the other choice. I wasted a lot of time trying to do things their way. Youngsters ( are you one?) don't seem to try to see the whole picture!!!

THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂 THANK YOU!!!!🙂
