Really bizarre. Hearing some people suggest that it's a problem on Apple's end is discouraging, as it suggests anything else I try may automatically fail. Yet if I can use the App Store from another user account, that suggests there has to be something lurking in my main account's Library (probably) that's causing the problem...

After running around in circles trying to get this resolved for me I finally found a (fairly easy) solution - the key point here is that the AppStore works just fine form another user account on the same computer (using the same AppleID) so it has to be something in ~/Library rather than /Library (thus ruling out the NetworkInterfaces.plist fix - which I tried and which didn't work for me).

Here is a step-by-step of what worked for me:

  1. Create a new user account - let's name it "Test" - I did not make this an administrator account
  2. Log into that new user account (skipping the AppleID/iCloud screen)
  3. Select "Software Update…" from the Apple menu - you will be asked to enter an administrator name and password in or to check for system updates - just provide your normal (admin-enabled) user name and password
  4. If you have any updates available, click "Update All" and log into the AppStore with your normal AppleID/password (this should work since you are in a new user account)
(If you don't have any updates available, I assume that you can also log in using the menu item in the Store menu of the AppStore application though I have not tried that)
  5. As soon as the download starts, you can quite the AppStore application
  6. Log out of your test account and back into your normal account
  7. Open /Applications/Utilies/Terminal
  8. Type the following command:
    sudo cp /Users/test/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist Library/Cookies/
  9. Open the AppStore again and you should be able to log back in

What does this do? It seems that the com.apple.appstore.plist file in your normal user account has become corrupted - we use a new account and create a new one (which is interchangebale since we use the same AppleID) and move that one back to the main account with the corrupt file.

I tried everything here then found another site with information which worked.

I can not find where the post was with the instructions but I did this,

1. open system preferences.

2. go to network settings

3. delete the etehrnet by sleceting and hitting -

4. reboot in safe mode like this, it takes quite a whiel to start up as it performs checks.

A.Be sure your Mac is shut down.
B.Press the power button.
C.Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
D.Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.

5. go to system pereferences

6. network settings.

7. click the + and add ethernet

8. apply

9. Now reboot again. (NOT in safe mode)

10. you may be able to login at this point. I could not.

11. BUT when I went to the app store, "store" menu "sign out" was now showing.

12.. I signed out, logged back in and all was well.

As the post I read for these instructions said, I see no logic to why your Ethernet setup effacts the app store login, but it did. I had tried everything else mentioned

Hi Gus,

Had same problem on my Mac.

Here is what fixed my problem:

1. Changed to another country (I am in Israel, and I changed to the USA store).

2. Clicked "Get" on the app I wanted.

3. Got a message stating that my Apple ID cannot be used in the USA store, and that I would be redirected to my store.

4. After I got redirected, searched for the app again, and clicked "Get".

5. App installed fine. Later apps (I tried before and failed) are now installing fine!

Hope this helps!

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

I got the "Cannot connect to App Store" message and absolutely NOTHING worked. I couldn't sign out and in again or even create a new account. I had this happen a few years ago with whichever OS came before Mavericks (I can't remember), but it just happened to me again recently with El Capitan on my 2012 MacBook Pro. If none of the other solutions here have worked for you (i.e., getting rid of the .plist files, changing ethernet settings, etc.), I can offer these suggestions to fix it or at least get it working long enough for you to make your updates and purchases:

1) Back up your computer and reinstall your operating system from the emergency partition.

2) Back up your computer and reinstall your system from a Time Machine backup and reapply your updates. Or,

3) Restart the computer in Safe Mode (Shift-Restart) and run the App Store.

This one should work because it runs your computer from bare bones, with no extra goodies or utilities running in the background. It's configured the way it was when you bought the computer brand new, so the App Store should run like it did right out of the box. If you can't get the App Store to run any other way, Safe Mode almost always works, which should allow you to at the very least run it temporarily to install your updates and make purchases.

There are several steps:

• Open the App Store, go to the Store menu and sign out

• Restart the computer but hold down the Shift key until the Apple symbol comes up and computer starts booting. It may take a little longer to start up.

• Open the App Store. You should still see the "Cannot connect to App Store" error message.

• Go to the Store menu and select "Sign In". This time, instead of an error message, it should offer you the normal sign in dialog box

• Enter your Apple ID username and password

• It might take a few seconds, but your "Featured", "Categories", "Purchased" and "Updates" buttons should now be selectable, not greyed out.

• Click on whichever ones you want and do what you need to do (browse categories, update, make purchases, etc.).

• When you're done, restart the computer in normal mode (i.e., no Shift key)

• Start the App Store again. It should work just fine from now on. But if it doesn't, at least you now have a functioning workaround.

And by the way, NO THANKS TO APPLE FOR HELPING ME FIND THIS FIX!!! If it were possible, I'd sue you to get back all the hours of my life I wasted working this problem. If you're going to force us to use the App Store as our only means to update and make purchases, there's no excuse for allowing this kind of error to go unfixed, especially for this long. I have to say that this is pathetic. You're basically forcing your users to provide their own tech support. I have yet to come here and see an actual solution to this problem offered by Apple tech support. As far as I can see, these forums are where legitimate tech support questions come to die. There are too many people here having the same problem. If you can't give us an App Store that actually works and your tech support people can't solve the problem because of your buggy programming, at the very least, give us an alternative that can keep us working. How about a page where we can enter our Apple ID and password and get links to the OS and all of our purchased applications from the Apple site or from iCloud. Or maybe you could just fix your crappy App Store. This is just disgraceful.

I had this problem too, until today. I noticed that not only was I having trouble updating applications, facebook wouldn't load certain pictures and sometimes webpages wouldn't open because "safari couldn't find the server." Anyway, for me not being able to load the webpages was the most annoying since the ones that wouldn't load revolved around college. So, I googled the problem. Turns out, I needed to update my DNS. Here is what I did:

Click On:

System preferences > Network > Advanced

At the top, there is a tab for DNS.

I added 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

On top of this I also deleted my cookies. To do that, open safari.

Safari > Preferences

At the top there is a tab for Privacy.

Remove All Website Data...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it was the DNS change that fixed it, but it doesn't hurt to delete your cookies every once in awhile 🙂

Let me know if that helps

I don't know if anyone else posted this but after being on the phone with Apple support and going through a number of things already listed on this thread, this finally worked. Navigate to the "Go" menu in the Finder and hold down "option" key to bring up the hidden "Library". Go the cookies folder and delete the com.apple.appstore.plist file. Empty the trash. Try to login in to the Mac App Store. That worked for me.

Quit the Mac App Store.

Launch the program called "Activity Monitor". You'll find it in:

Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities

A quick way to find it is to click the "Go" menu in the Finder and choose "Utilities" - it's in that folder.

Once it's launched, look for a process called "storeagent". Click once on it to highlight it, then click the red "Quit Process" button at the top left of Activity Monitor's toolbar. When you're then asked "Are you sure you want to quit this process?", click "Force Quit".

Launch the Mac App Store again (a new "storeagent" process will be created). You should now be able to log in to the Mac App Store. This fix has worked for me and others.
