I rented a movie on my ipad, how can I watch on my pc?

That info buried in the FAQ is seemingly at odds with the info on the 'Learn more about rentals' page prominently linked right from the iTunes movie rental pages (on both the PC and iPad), which says in the very first section: "iTunes in the Cloud - Once you rent or purchase a movie, watch it on your computer, iPad, iPod...Each device remembers where you stopped watching and picks up where you left off. Also you can download your previously purchased movies through iCloud..."

This is very deceptive, first in mentioning rentals in the iCloud section if rentals are not included in iCloud services, and second, in not providing notice that rentals transfers are limite if made from particular devices.

I understand what you are saying, but this just means that each device is capable of remembering where you left off when you paused the movie. It doesn't state that you can pause the movie on the computer and pickup where you left off on the iPad. It is confusing, but I don't know that I would say that is deceptive.

And this is true - with purchase movies - not rentals. I think that is very clear.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine, but to me this is more confusing than it is deceptive. However, the title of the page is Learn More About Renting and Buying Movies which does include both options,

I admit that I find a lot of what Apple posts on their support sites and FAQ sites can be more confusing than helpful. I personally believe that they should take a long hard look at many of their kb support articles. One of the things that they sorely lack IMO - is clear step by step instructions. They get too caught up in the "look at the amazing things that you can do approach" rather than actually telling you how to do it and that drives me up a wall.

Anyway, if you want to let Apple know how you feel, state it here.

It certainly implies that. And Netflix has that capability.

In many iTunes contexts, 'rentals' are a type of 'purchase'. I rented a movie today and shows as a purchase in my account.

I completely agree with your assessment of Apple's support (or lack thereof) and I would extend it to the overall usability of Apple products, and really can't understand how they are as popular as they are.

However, NetFlix is a streaming service. It's not your iPad or your computer that's remembering your place, it's the NetFlix servers. So, it doesn't matter how you log into them. Movies resident on your device are not connected to copies of the movie on another device.

Well, the rented movies are certainly connected to a server that keeps track of time left on the rental. It wouldn't seem too much more difficult for that server to also keep a viewing bookmark.

P.s., I suppose help with formatting for these forums is similarly buried in a FAQ somewhere.

I believr the time clock in the rental is embedded in the file itself. You don't need to be connected to the internet for the movie to expire.

Nonetheless, you should submit that feedback to Apple:

This is weird, as it's also at odds with the 'help' directly from itunes help menu:

"Transfer a rental from your iTunes library to iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

1. Connect your device to your computer and select your device.
2. Click Movies.
3. Select the rented item.
4. Click Move.

To transfer a rental from your device to your computer, follow the same instructions."

Sounds simple enough doesn't it, yet doesn't seem possible at all!! : )

I just purchase a movie on my Macbook Pro. I plugged in my iPad, brought up iTunes and selected the iPad on the top right of the menubar. I then clicked on movies and the rented movie was there, along with an option to transfer it to the iPad.

I transfered it to my iPad and started watching it via Airplay on my Apple TV.

I then decided to see if I could transfer it back to the computer. Followed the same steps to the rented movie and transfered it bact to my Macbook Pro. I then proceded to watch it on my Apple TV via Airplay from my Macbook Pro.

The issue is (or was) that when you rent a movie on an iPad you cannot transfer it to or finish watching it on any other device.

Did you try plugging your iPad to your PC and then doing what I suggested above?

IIRC, that's exactly what I tried, but it doesn't work. Try renting on the iPad and then transferring to the computer. it doesn't work, and that is apparently by design.

Straight from the iTunes terms and conditions:

(a) Content rentals are viewable on only one device at a time. You must be connected to the iTunes Service when moving rentals, and you may do so only between your computer and other compatible devices. Content rented using your Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) may not be moved. If you move a rental to a compatible device and then use the iTunes Service to restore that device, or choose Settings > Reset > Erase all content and settings on that device, the rental will be permanently deleted.
