New Maps App on iOS 6 - poor resolution?

Is it just me, or is the Satellite image resolution unusably low in the new maps app?

In major UK cities its ok (but not great) but in a large town (pop 400k+) it's terrible.

What's your experience?

iPhone 4S, Other OS, iOS 6

It's quite rubbish in the UK.

Lots of it in black and white or very low-res.

My home town (pop. 25k) is labelled about a mile North of where it should be, and a sub-district of my home town is in the place of the center of my town!

Apple has ALOT of work to do before iOS 6 Maps is anything like the quality of Google Maps.

The 3D Maps in big cities are impressive though - shame I don't live in one.

First the good points:

Navigation does work

Traffic display is much clearer

Also includes icons for road works and reasons for hold ups

The bad points:

Did not know where a local village was, tried to locate a completely different place. There are real gaps in the mapping.

Navigation routes are laughable. Certainly no substitute for TomTom.

Satellite photos are all but useless, something which I often use when planning journies where I may be towing.

Streetview was used for the same reason above.

Apple need to really address the holes in the system. They should start with the satellite images. Forget city fly by, this is not useful. Streetview and satellites are way more important. At the moment the map application is a downgrade.

I've emailed apple via the feedback form, my basic point is that the amount of money they charge for their devices either direct or through channels such as Vodafone or O2 or any provider is very high, especially when putting out sub standard services.

Admittedly so far (on my iPad 3 anyway) I quite like iOS 6, though I'm annoyed by YouTube and google maps being removed for no other reason than cost cutting (as their contract with google had ended) along with their their pre-pubescent feud with google. I have ordered my new iPhone via contract upgrade, so the amount of hard earned cash I'm handing to Vodafone and apple is quite high, so I'm doubly annoyed at the ***** maps they just chuck out.

What happened to the maps that were taken with sophisticated imaging technology hat could pick up objects around 4 feet?? (Though this was "from a source")

Shame on you Apple, supposed to be innovative, not retro!

I'm not expecting any response from those feckers, despite how much we pay them, they are too highly perched on their ivory tower to care about paying customers.

Im in the Mids too just south of brum and my location is either blurred colour or very poor black and white - and cant figure out why sometimes one and sometimes the other - must say this is the first time I have been disappointed in an app from apple I just cant understand why they put out something so crap - maybe is ok in the us so should have only deployed it there!

I live in Swansea and you can't even see the city let alone my area :-(

I think apple have only aimed there products and iOS 6 at people who live and work in big cities! I have an iPhone 4S and a iPad 2 and had to wait a year just to get Siri to work in the uk and I didn't even get Siri on my iPad when the new iOS came out! Now with the problem with maps also! I'm not impressed!

As my wife and kids all have iPods iPhones iPads I think it's about time to look at Samsung and see what they have to offer!

Lol never thought I'd hear myself say that!

Am in the UK and I would agree that the maps app is totally hopeless to the point of being unuseable. I have left feedback with Apple referring to their old line of "It Just Works" and saying that with this app "It Just Doesn't!".

I have found numerous towns in wrong places, mispelling of place names and am totally bemused by the fact that all major roads and motorways are now yellow which conforms to no UK mapping standards. If you are zoomed out to check major routes between Birmingham & London for example there is no way of telling which are motorways. The satellite imagery is probably the worst I have ever seen.

It also, at zoomed out views, will label tiny towns but not major ones. For example if you zoom out to see the south of England you will see a Luton in Devon (which is a tiny place) but not the city of Luton as you would expect. God help a visitor hoping to fly from Luton Airport! And if you search for Luton it will take you to the tiny village and not the city. Maybe we should start a thread with the most amazing inaccuracies that everyone is finding?

There are so many mistakes that even using the 'Report a Problem' link within the app would just take forever.

I have a Samsung Galaxy ace and Google Maps works just fine on that - including street view.. My iPad, at 4 x the price has a map system with unbelievably poor quality imagery and functionality.

I too have left feedback for Apple regarding this 'upgrade'.

This was my first foray into Apple products and it may well be my last.

Seriously unimpressed :-(

You have to say, why would Google produce an App to add Google Maps back in to iOS6. Apple have done a great job here...... at moving some users towards Android. Personally I will just use the web app version of Google Maps on my New iPad. I'm not bothering to update my iPad 2 to iOS6. I tend not to use the maps on my iPhone 4S, so there is no real worries there. What I gained by being able to put my phone into Do Not Disturb on a schedule more than makes up for the pain involved.

What a complete disaster. I never thought i'd see the day that Apple launched such a bad product.

These are the problems i've been having and features i've lost from Google.

  1. Very low resolution satellite images that are no use at all at higher zoom levels.
  2. Some parts of the satellite images are black and white!
  3. Town names are missing or are in the wrong place, the name of my town has completely gone.
  4. Zoom out the map a little and sometimes small little town names are still displayed but large major cities are hidden.
  5. Transport routes are gone.
  6. No street view.
  7. Location data from Yelp has a larger database compared to Google but some of the data is out of date or incorrect. With Google it seemed more accurate for the most part.

When are Google going to save use and release Google Maps for iOS?

Some of the mistakes in Dublin are comical. There is a large farm in South Dublin called Airfield, which the new maps app has actually labelled as an airfield! With a little aircraft symbol and everything. They have also moved Dublin Zoo right to the heart of Temple Bar, very handy for all the stag and hen parties.

The resolution of the satellite photography is so bad it's not functional. I'll definitely be using the online google maps. Poor show Apple.

I really can't believe Apple have allowed this to go through. Surely someone has to take the rap for this. And it's not just maps. I live in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. I just asked Siri where the nearest Pizza Hut was. The first result was here in Letchworth. Unfortunately it closed a few months ago! The next nearest is showing 23 miles away at Borehamwood!!!
