wifi sync not working after ios6 update

this thread is so long now that it takes way too long to summarize or re-capitulate. i think that different people are experiencing different issues, but it all kind of comes under the heading of ios syncing over wifi. i am following this because i like to sync my ios devices from within itunes over wifi and somewhere along the line, that went from being perfectly reliable to being very hit or miss.

fwiw, and as i mentioned in prior posts many, many pages back, things have gotten better for me by specifying the hostname for my mac and then -- most significant -- messing around with whether the ios devices are plugged into power or not. apple says that wifi sync is only supposed to happen when the ios device is plugged into power. that is definitely not the case, and never has been as far as i can remember. but even more counter-intuitively, i can report that very consistently, if my ios devices are not plugged into power when i start itunes, they almost always show up available for wifi sync. and if they are plugged in and don't show up, i can almost always get them to show up by unplugging and plugging them into power (usually waiting 30 seconds or so after either plugging in or unplugging).

in my experience, there is definitely a connection between plugging into power and being available in itunes for wifi sync, and the inverse of what apple says is supposed to happen is what mostly happens for me.

Rob, sorry to **** on your party but I honestly think it will fail after a couple of days, after you've been out of the house and on other networks etc.

I tried the mac hostname "fix". The IP address "fix". The proxy "fix" and a hundred others.

They all work perfectly.....for a couple of days.

I have never expected a wifi sync without power connected since I discovered that to be necessary many many months ago - so that isn't a factor in my problems as I always connect my iPhone to power a supply.

re-read my post and try it sometime with your phone DISconnected from power.

Crap. I just walked my dog around the neighborhood, and after my iPhone flirted with a dozen other wifi sources and now I'm home, I cannot sync my iPhone. Sorry about the false 6.1 hope, when nothing else worked but suddenly my synce worked, I was very hopeful... Obviously, too hopeful. Sorry about that.

Note that my past wifi sync success has absolutely zero correlation to being connected to a power source. When having sync problems, I tried plugging it into power (based on recommendations in this thread), but it's never made a difference. Typically when I do successful syncs, I am not connected to a power source... Well, unless I'm plugged into my Mac with iTunes.

yeah, that's what i am saying.

i just started itunes. my iphone 4 which is sitting here UNPLUGGED from power immediately showed up.

my ipad 2, plugged into the charger did not. i UNPLUGGED the ipad from power and started counting. 24 seconds later it showed up in itunes.

just sayin...

Turning wi-fi off and then back on on my Mac still seems to correct the sync issue for me.

Hmmm... you are right! I had to launch iTunes and then turn WiFi off and back ona again and it worked; at least iTunes can see my iPhone - it doesn't sync but I can sync manually.

It seems like some 1s and 0s are messed up somewhere.

FIXED FOR ME.

I was having issues to. Starting a Wifi sync from iTunes worked but starting it from my iPhone 5 didn't.

What I did is

1. Change my Macbook hostname from "Macbook Air de Max" to a name with no space (MBA_Max) and rebooted the laptop

2. In my router, created DHCP reservations for my MAC and iPhone so they always get the same IP address

3. Rebooter each device and made sure they were getting the reserved IP address

4. Plusgged iPhone to the MAC and in iTunes, I disabled Wifi Sync for this device, Applied changed, Sync then enable Wifi Sync, Applied and Sync.

Did this yesterday and it always work since.

I'll post a reply if it stops working after a few days.

I did EXACTLY that a few weeks ago.

The fix lasts for a couple of days. Trust me :(

Also, doesn't this fix then create connection problems when you're out and about and trying to connect to other networks? That seems like the 'fixed IP' thing would be fine for devices that stay put, but not for mobile ones.?

It's fine with other networks.
