Disappointed with maps, will google maps be available in the App Store?

I was really looking forward to the new maps but am very disappointed. Don't get me wrong the 3D maps are great, but so far in the UK I can only find London with this function.

But this isn't my gripe. It's the view in standard mode, none of the road types have different colours so navigation is much more difficult. On google maps the motorways are blue, major A roads green and so on. All the roads are the same colour on apple maps so motorways look the same as a roads etc. Is this likely to change?

If not will google maps be available in the App Store any time soon? Or is there a free/cheap map app that is as good as google maps? I can use google maps in safari but its nowhere near as intuitive :-(

I know the OS is only new, but they've been making a song and dance about this maps and I find it a big disappointing. I don't even like the colour scheme, oceans and rivers etc are shocking blue.

Very dissappointed with new maps. If you click on the public transport icon, it just directs you to the App Store & finds nothing for Adelaide, Australia although there at least 2 apps available. The old app was excellent for finding local public transport. As usual, everything revolves around the US market. Apple should not dictate to customers what apps they can have on their phones & if Google Maps becomes available through the App Store, I for one will be dumping Apples offering providing it has all the features of the orginal.

Apple is not saying you can't have Google Maps app if they offer it.

They chose not to continue with their agreement with Google and redesigned their Map app accordingly.

Huh.... I guess if Apple put the Maps app that you were so used to using before also means they told you that's the only Map you could use...

Try looking for alternatives to first party apps in the App Store that solve your issue.

And start yelling at Google for not releasing an App yet!

Be thankful you can find where your country is.

I have just tried it and it wouldnt accept New Zealand, so now everything finishes with Nueva Zelanda instead.

Then the first time I typed in my home address my house was missing..... in fact my whole street was completely missing from the maps and search function!! In satellite view the area is mostly white cloud so that is a waste of time too. Also swaps to black and white as you zoom in and is really blurry compared to google maps for the same area.

I think i can safely assume I wont be replacing my car gps with a tomtom system anytime soon - and I suppose not using maps any longer on the iphone will do wonder for my broadband usage <g>.

After iOS 5, I'm glad I waited this one out to see how people like it. I've seen Apple Maps on my friend's iPhone 4S and it's terrible in comparison to the now 3 year old Maps app. If you want flyover, just use the Google Earth app. I bought the TomTom gps / sat nav for $50, so I have offline turn by turn and can use Google maps for traffic ahead of time. The only thing I see that's better with 6 is the Clock. Apple dumping Google Maps for its own is fair, but not having offline map caching, or street view is a big deal. It's like Siri all over again - not ready for prime time. As others have said, Google Maps is there in Safari, and Google Earth and Places will get you something, but I do expect a Google Maps app for iOS soon given they said it would be on all platforms. If not I'll stick with 5.1.1. until my contract is up next Feb and go to the Note 2 or something. Ps I saw my folks place in Wales on satellite view and it's grey there. Couldn't find the place via Siri or typing it in, so I had to find it myself..

Apple can't approve a Google Maps app unless and until Google submits it. So far, they haven't, and they've provided no indication of when they will.

Given that there's a strong feeling at Apple that Google abused Eric Schmidt's position on the board of directors to get inside information on the iPhone without bothering to share that they were working on a directly competing platform, it's not too surprising that Apple wants to get anything Google off the iPhone, at least as standard software.

I'd expect Apple's Maps app to rapidly improve, given the number of cartography outfits they've bought up over the past year or so.

I guess I will chime in here. I love everything about the iOS6 update EXCEPT the maps. Apple!! What were you thinking? This may very well turn out to be the biggest backfire in recent Apple history.

Yes, certain cities are in 3D, and it's pretty, but the closer you zoom, the worse it looks. Some of the treeline edges look like cutouts pasted on paper.

What I will miss most, is dropping a pin for 360º street view . You cannot do that in the google web version on iPad. Googles street views have spoiled me and have been a tremendous help to me in my travels.

So, am I contemplating restoring the iPad back to factory settings? I doubt it. But I am NOT upgrading my 4S to iOS6 anytime soon.

I live in Southern UK. In satellite mode, I cant get any clear image. All it shows good is at the satellite level :-(. Apple did a big mistake by removing Google Maps. It is surely a step backwards. I hope google launches Maps app for iPhone the way it did with you tube. Even the rendering of maps is very slow. Being vector graphics infact it should have been smooth and faster. All I could say is that the new maps S U C K S

I agree that this was so disappointing...

However, in the meantime, you can open google maps on safari, then click in the arrow button at the bottom and choose add to home screen. An icon will appear on the home page, resembling the google maps app, which is a direct shortcut to google maps - which is as close to the previous app as it gets so far.
