iPhoto Albums not seen in iTunes after iOS 6 update

I upgraded a 3rd gen iPad and an iPhone 4 to iOS 6, then updated my Macbook Pro (2.4 ghz quad core i7, 8GB RAM) to 10.8.2 with the requisite iPhoto update. Now, iTunes will not show my iPad even though wireless sync is enabled, unless the iPad is connected to the laptop via the docking cable. Both iPhone and iPad error out on synch with an error 1140 if synching photos is enabled. Under the photo tab, the button to have "selected albums, events and faces" is grayed out. So I can only select to sync ALL photos or none. I believe the error 1140 is stemming from my library being too large to sync to the i-device. In any case, I can no longer choose certain albums that were enabled under iOS 5. The area below these options in the Photos tab in iTunes also does not show any albums, where it used to do so in a grayed out fashion even if that option was not selected. Major issue here. Have tried all the rebuild and repair of iPhoto library. The kicker is that both the devices I upgraded have the exact same issue, so I'm thinking this is an update/Apple problem, not an issue with my devices or config.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), 8GB RAM, BootCamp with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

From the other discussion thread, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4315650

You don't need to edit the AlbumData.xml file, you just need to open it and find the Album name in your iPhoto Library that contains a music selection with an ampersand followed by a blank (& ) and then change that iPhoto album music to another song without an ampersand in its song title, artist, etc.

I Just followed Mr. Delaney's advice here, the only difference being I used the free TextWrangler App TextWrangler from the Mac App store to find the offending ampersand in my Slideshow music for my iPhoto Albums :

Here's how to fix it without editing the XML, in a way that should stick. It takes a bit longer, but it's safer than editing the files directly. You'll still have to look at the XML files to figure out what album to change.

  1. Right click on your iPhoto Library (in your "Pictures" folder) and choose "Show Package Contents"
  2. Find the "AlbumData.xml" file and open it in TextEdit or any other text editor
  3. Search (command-F) for "& " - don't include the quotation marks, but do include a single space after the ampersand. It should take you right to the name of the song that's the problem.
  4. Do not change anything! Just look in the lines immediately above the song name, for the name of the Photo Album that's using that song in it's slide show. It will look something like this, if the name of the album was "Vacation Pictures":
    <key>AlbumName</key> <string>Vacation Pictures</string>
  5. Close the "AlbumData.xml" file, and close the "iPhoto Library" folder.
  6. Now open up iPhoto.
  7. Look for the album with the same name as the one you found in the file, and click on it.
  8. Click the "Play" icon
  9. You should see some options for the slide show (if the slide show starts playing, just move your mouse and click the "music" icon to get there)
  10. On the music tab, cilck the "custom playlist" checkbox, and drag any song (make sure it doesn't have an "&" in the song name, album name, or artist name) into the custom playlist box.
  11. Click "Play"

That will safely and permanently remove the ampersand from the slideshow, so when you go back to iTunes you should be able to sync selected albums.

Finally I had to close and open iPhoto after changing the music for the offending album and then all was well with iTunes again and I was able to select albums, events etc again.

Apple still needs to fix this so we don't have to go through this but at least we have a working solution.

This fixed it for me as well. Thank you!

One piece of additional info...when I tried this, I deviated slightly, thinking I'd just disable music for the slideshow completely. I unchecked the box for "Play music during slideshow", played to confirm the change, then closed iPhoto. Strangely, the music choice with the "& " problem remained in the XML file and iTunes still choked on it. So, it's important to actually choose different music that doesn't have the "& " problem instead of just disabling it entirely.

Well, you could try downloading the free trial of "iPhoto Library Manager." If that shows an issue when you run it where it can't see your library, it will even tell you which line of your "albums.xml" file has the issue. You can then look and see specifically where your issues are. Bottom line though, this issue is so easy to correct now that we know what to look for that it really probably isn't worth worrying about to the extent that you pass up the upgrade.

W M R Yes, you can do a search in the .xml file. Look here for detailed instructions.
