iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

Hi Shanon.

I am currently residing in Singapore.

There are no official Apple Stores over here (other than online) so we just have resellers.

I got my phone from Singtel - one of the telecoms providers.

I took my faulty handset to the Singtel Apple and Blackberry service center yesterday.

They informed me that they were already out of stock on the 64gb black replacement models and that I would have to wait up to two weeks for a new shipment.

I received a text message at 1.30pm today to inform me that the new handsets had arrived (we are nice and close to China here I guess)

I went straight down and picked up my replacement handset in store (it came in a hard black plastic box which he then put the faulty handset into).

I checked for dead pixels and checked that the wifi was picking up singals.

I hope that helps.

See this photo from speedtest.

You can see that the connectivity suddenly dropped after about 2 seconds into the test. Then picked up for a brief second just before end of upload test.

EDIT:

This is another.

Showing no activity for the first second of test, suddenly normal activity, then stops about 2 seconds before end of test then drops off.

I exchanged mine in Austin, Texas at the Domain, 11410 Century Oaks. I walked in 30 minutes early, signed in and as soon as i explained the issue of no wifi reception I didnt even have to wait, they just exchanged it. BTW, It was a Iphone 5, 64g, white produced in week 36 (September)

On another note I am also having trouble syncing with itunes over wifi, the computer cant seem to find the phone in order to sync.

I am currently restoring the iPhone again just to see if it helps and then calling Apple. I am still within my 14 day return with Verizon.

I hate to give it up as the ONLY problem is the intermittent wifi as far as I can tell.

An interesting thing I saw was when I went into iTunes management from the store tab then "account", then where it says I have 4 devices, it listed my iPhone5 as an iPhone 4s and had these black diamond characters inserted in the name.

Yes, iTunes recognizes it as an iPhone 5 when syncing, etc, but it is strange that at the Apple Account Management it is listed as an iPhone 4S 😕😕

I'm just wondering if everyone who is having wifi issues also has this issue orif this issue is across the board with everyone???

thanks!

One thing to bear in mind is that there are added capabilities present in the unified communications chipset in the iPhone 5 that don't make debugging simple. The other thing is from the point of view of the user. Apple tries to make things as simple as possible and not really communicate what it does.

Sometimes these things are not simple. For example there are many example of "buffer bloat" that plague all Internet TCP-IP systems that come with common off the shelf equipment hooked up to really fat pipes. Stuff is stored in buffers and that causes a problem with the data because it does not back off properly. There are no consumer routers that really deal with this.

Having used Macs since the 128K Model, and up to current models, and at the same time PC's various versions of Windows, Linux, etc. In general when the software behaves the way it should, there is a net savings of time using a Mac or IOS based system, because it is well designed.

That's the advantage of a closed eco-system. On the other hand, once you have an open system, you tend to waste a significant amount of time messing around with it, and thus don't have any fear of going in and changing things. Compared to the rest of the time one wastes, it's trivial.

I did an entire Device Firmware Update (DFU) before I tried to load the new IOS on my iPhone. Then when I did load it, I loaded to my PC first, and transferred it using the USB. That seemed the safest way to do it. It took a while, but then worked flawlessly. With the added functionality of the new chip on the 5, it will react differently with all the routers out there. The routers may need some time to catch up, or perhaps operate in a simpler, slower mode, they are very cheap it's not a big upgrade.

My router is not that old, and I had already bumped up to a pure N environment at 5 which was an experiment.

Now I am getting 16 meg on my iPhone 4 on speed test.

OTOH my coverage at 5 is different in the house. That because the higher frequency tends to get blocked by walls.

A couple spots that worked fairly well with G do not, and if I'm a floor down from my router using my PC I get around 30 on the wireless.

The cool stuff that the iPhone 5 can do with WIFI, like WIFI Direct, is very cool, looking forward to it. I have already decided to get a WIFI AC router for faster throughput, or I might just drop a cat5e and put in a wall plug and plug in, because at the router itself I'm getting 80meg.

I would like to find one person who went through DFU on this list (not the basic restore, reset) and did not have it work. And really reset the router, (not just plug unplug, but nuked the DHCP lease, and did the other suggestions). For a bunch of people this worked.

This is hard for some people, because of the culture of "it just works" that is expected from Apple. If you had a Samsung G3, you would be faced with the situation of someone being able to entirely wipe your phone remotely (remote factory reset) by you hitting a bad web page. Unlikely to happen, (and they already pushed out a fix), but none the less, very scary for smartphones in general.

I have similar issues with wifi intermittently, but then there are times my wifi appears to work correctly. Except I discovered that even though I see the wifi indicator along the top, and everything appears to be working, the phone is actually using data over LTE. I did a speed test with wifi enabled and I made sure the wifi indicator was showing before and after the test. After the test I checked the data usage and I had used 10mb during the testing. I just thought I would warn everyone, if you think wifi is working it may not be wifi, it may be cell data usage. I did my testing on 2 different iPhone 5's both 32gb and on two different wifi networks, one at home and a public network with similar results.

Interesting. I may try the DFU on my 5. My iPhone 4 didn't need to do that. I just did update/Restore using iTunes and it is fine. I believe the main problems existwith 4S and 5 and the 5 is out of the box messed up.

But since RESTORE is always a thing to try, I am performing it. I may try DFU next, and then return. I cannot have intermittent wifi causing skyrocket data charges or continuously turning LTE off and on.

Another thing I would like to know is the fact tha the chip is "always on, always connected" on some of the iPhone 5 which means it has to go into a "sleep" mode to save battery. Is that triggering something else in the software? My guess that was the purpose of hitting the test web page that went down during the original activation phase for a few days.

Logically it would have to come out of sleep mode.

Is there some kind of trigger that get's it fully functional, and then does the tcp-ip (i.e. network connection) work but maybe other services like DNS not work?

Some people reported being able to get the google website, via the address, but they were not able to get there by name.
