iPhone 5 wifi issues
My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

Same issue here, wifi works but only when less then 5 feet from the router. Apple care told me this morning "oh - it's definitly software, hold tight." I'm pretty annoyed, wish I could re-activate my iPhone 4 until the fix is found as 4G data is weak here in Santa Cruz, CA. Arg.
Same problem here! Tried resetting etc but no joy. Going to go to apple shop in Glasgow to see what they say, no doubt I will be fobbed off with some lame answer. I also have an iPad 3 with same problem also running ios6 so I can only assume its yet another bug. Beginning to wish I had kept my iPhone 4 and not updated my iPad. No wifi and maps that don't work properly - what a joke!
Thanks but nope, that's not this problem. A lot of us have tried every trick in the book, over & over. It's worth it, because some have reported success.I wonder, however, how permanent their success has been. Any of these things might cause wifi to start working again for a few minutes, I have had many false successes myself. And I think some people get excited and immediately post that it's worked. But for a good many of us, none of them work permanently:
-Safari cache flush
-Manual DNS
-Restore phone as new
-Restore phone from backup
-Reset Network Settings
-Set HTTP Proxy to Auto
-Various router settings (in my case, it will only connect on a completely unsecured network, not acceptable) BTW I have several Aiport WAPs, and an Asus. Same story with all of them.
-Standing in a circle of chicken bones and chanting the Lord's Prayer backwards
I think there are some sites displaying these solutions as click bait.
There's a bug Apple needs to fix with these iPhone 5's. My iPad 3 & iPhone 4 are working fine with OS 6, so I can't speak for those devices. If you can't cajole the Apple store into giving you a replacement (which judging from a lot stories don't work either) you just have to wait with broken phone and broken heart until Apple produces a fix.
I hear what you're saying, but I have 2 iPhone 5's 32GB models and 1 works perfectly on wifi and one does not. So explain that one?
I can't believe that Apple would relase a POS phone or OS like this! I've had every iPhone relased except the 4S and this one by far has had the most issues out of all of them so far!
Does anyone else's iPhone 5 get really hot after only a few minutes of a phone call?
My iPhone 4 never got hot when making calls.
This is just unacceptable and I'm debating on returning the iPhone at this point. I can't even believe that I just typed that, but its so true I just want my iPhone 4 back.
As a recently converted Android user, my experience so far with Apple has been nothing short of horrendous.
Like many others, I am having painfully slow connection speeds over my wi-fi network. I have narrowed it down to a hardware issue, for the fact that someone else that lives in my dormatory has an iPhone 5, and their wi-fi is just as fast as should be expected.
I decided to go straight to the source and call Apple. THAT was a terrible experience in itself. It seems as if my only options here are to either send my phone in for repair (and be without a phone for 5 days), do an "express repair" or something along those lines, in which they will send me a loaner phone. During this time, there will be a hold placed on my debit card for the full retail price of the phone (I'm a broke college student - all my funds just went to purchasing my new iPhone. Don't exactly have $700 sitting in my bank account). My third option would be to head to an Apple store, in which they would repair or replace the device. Awesome news, except the closest Apple store is 5 hours away. After explaining my situation, the "senior advisor" basically had nothing to tell me besides I'm out of luck. Great.
My complaint is this: could they have not even offered the hope of a patch or software update to fix this issue that several other users are experiencing? Of course, the reps acted like they were completely new to the problem. I'm sure that's totally false. Even with my old Samsung Infuse, I experienced a hardware issue, and Samsung was happy to send me a replacement under warranty, free of charge. I figured Apple would surely have a stronger customer support system than Samsung, but I was mistaken.
And on top of the wi-fi issue, my keyboard is extremely sluggish. It cannot keep up with my keystrokes, and trust me, I am not a fast mobile typist.
Any tips? Is there a chance of a software update that may fix the issue? Or was my expensive investment in an Apple product a total and complete waste of money?
Sorry to hear that your first experience is this horrible iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Too bad you didn't get the 4S that seemed to be a pretty good iPhone. I'm sure Steve Jobs is probably turning over in his grave right now seeing whats happening at Apple with all the wifi issues, map problems, issues regarding the iPhone Foxcon plant and all the other issues that are currently plaguing Apple.
Great Job Mr. Cook, Great Job!
Also, does anyone else's iPhone 5 get really warm to the touch on the bottom in the back while on calls? Mine does and I'm going to use my temp gun to gauge how hot it actually gets. This is just ridiculous how crappy this iPhone 5 is. I'm so disappointed with apple right now.
I did find that using Google's DNS server at 8.8.8.8 sped mine up quite a bit, but still not what it should be. Also, before I did this, setting the phone right next to the router sped it up too. Strange stuff.
Oh I know Eric, Tim Cook is a good guy and I'm in Marketing as well. I also cringed when I heard Steve Jobs say that "You're holding it wrong" only he could get away with saying something like that.
I did file a bug report as I always do when I have problems and to be honest I haven't had any until this iPhone, so we'll see how this works out.
I'm also lucky to have a grandfathered unlimited AT&T data plan, but that doesn't help when you have your 5 year old son trying to FaceTime with you and it doesn't work when just the other day it did with the iPhone 4. So even though he says he understands it still made him sad since he just wanted to see his Daddy and show me what he did in school today while I'm away.
Now I could have faceTime over cellular, but I'd then have to give up my grandfathered unlimited account. So yeah, fun stuff!
I also wonder why this iPhone 5 keeps getting really hot when making calls. Does your iPhone 5 get hot when making calls?
I've had similar Wi-Fi issues with my new iPhone 5, but not to the same extent as some people. My iPhone's Wi-Fi speeds are fairly unreliable, but nothing like 1Mbps. It gets maybe half of the download speed of my iPhone 4S and iPad 3, all on iOS 6.
I'm still not entirely convinced that this is not a compatibility issue with the Speedtest.net app, though. I downloaded a few different speed test apps and, as long as they did not use Ookla, I found my speeds to be right where they should be (15-18Mbps). I also noticed that different servers made a HUGE difference. When trying the server in Irvine, CA, my speeds were incredibly slow (4-6Mbps). I switched to a few in Los Angeles, and they clocked in around 15Mbps despite being 30 miles farther from Irvine. Try Speedtest X or Xtreme Labs Speedtest and see what you get. Also try manually selecting different servers in Speedtest.net.
I did, however, swap out my iPhone 5 for a new one just to be sure. It's currently restoring and we'll see how it works after that.
If you do swap out your iPhone, please check the condition of the new one BEFORE accepting it. I had to reject one that had a big ding in it. It's black, and you could see bright shiny silver metal beneath the coating on the rim that was damaged. I thought I was going to cut my finger when I ran it over it. The one I settled on, while nearly unnoticeably marked, does have some imperfections that are visible if you look hard enough.
@Jeff - Yes, we're all family here :-)
Honestly, I haven't made that many calls with it, and the ones I have, have been on speakerphone with it sitting on my desk, so I can't speak to the heat issue. The voice quality BTW on speaker phone is greatly superior to my 4. But I think with increasingly speedy hardware in increasingly small enclosures, we're just going to have to find a way to live with it. I had an iPad 2, but was recently given an iPad3 by my employer (Adobe, just so you know where I stand about SJ, it was a shock to us - we were trying to make desktop software work on a brand new, underpowered mobile platform, a huge challenge, and we thought we were friends :-) And it does get a lot hotter by comparison, but **** that screen is practically lickable.
Truthfully, my bottom line was in my original post, Apple had to prepare a number of devices to be ready to ship on Sept. 21 unprecedented in human history. There's a bad batch in there, and historically, they eventually make good on it. I've also done manufacturing & distribution of consumer products. It happens. If they don't fix it within the return window, I'll return it, and re-buy when they get it worked out.
Glad you filed a bug report! It's like voting, we can express our opinions all day long but there's only one thing that matters.
Aww <<Hugs>> :-)
I do have to agree the speakerphone is AWESOME! Much better than the iPhone 4 speaker phone.
I'm already looking for an alternate iPhone 4S or a Samsung S3 on the used market myself for the day I return my iPhone 5, since the brainiac that I am just sold or iPhone 4's. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but I'm not the type to just sit quietly with a broken phone. So hopefully Apple will make good. Like they did with the original release by issuing a gift card ( remember that one ) or the free cases with the iPhone 4's, I wonder what this round of make goods are going to be. Hopefully its a shiny new iPhone 5 ding and scratch free that actually works as it's intended to.
I had exactly the same problem.
The only thing that worked for me was to enter the DNS server info manually for every Wifi you want to connect to. I use Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and they work like a charm.
I think it's the antenna.
I will return the unit unless I get a replacement.
I just confirmed that my replacement unit exhibits the same signs as my original launch day iPhone 5. It feels like a combination of an iOS 6 software issue and a lack of compatability for Speedtest.net with the new iPhone 5. Maybe it doesn't work well with the new antenna design?
i cant understand the bug coz when i see vids on youtube its speed is ok on wifi but when i surf or use speed test it shows dam slow speed but no words from apple the only solution is ios 6.0.1 but dont know when what a crapple
