Poor Battery Life iPhone5

I've had my iPhone less than 24 hours and have noticed the battery life is being depleted at a much higher rate than what I consider normal. This morning turned on my phone after turning it OFF last night and connected to the charger all night.

I adjusted some settings to match my iPhone 4 added PW's to some app's. After about 20 minutes of playing with my phone the power level dropped from 100% to 92%...no calls.

Anyone else notice poor battery life issues.........or do you thing that's normal?

Hi All,

I don't believe in turning off functionality on a beautiful phone as iPhone 5. Here is what I did, and it did make a difference to me (I was a victim of the battery issue).

1. Go to Settings --> Notifications

2. 'Not In Notification Center' - Ensure all the new applications installed by each one of you, have not only the notification Center turned off, but also ensure you turn off unwanted apps - (Good to have Alert Style as None)

a) Badge App Icon

b) Sounds

c) View in Lock Screen

I did all this and from earlier, my power was draining out anywhere between 2%-4% every hour. Now it has reduced drastically to 1% maybe in 2-3 hours 🙂.

And I can't take my hands off the phone, which is why even the 1% every 2-3 hours, else that also should increase with time. Plus, feel free to use 'Do Not Disturb' from Settings frequently when you really won't be using the phone (sleeping, driving, meetings).

Over the air (wifi backup to iclouds also consume a lot of power, turn it off and do it once when you are charging the phone)

I believe, the new OS is taking time for people to learn about, as it contains 100's of new functions, which we have to get used to in time, and causing all these confusions. It is a great phone people, trust me 🙂.

Cheers,

Vishnu

Ok....So as a conclusion based on my personal experience:

  • I upgraded to iPhone5 from an older iPhone.

I noticed that my battery usage was higher than an iPhone5 set up as new and had a heavier user.

  • I tried restoring the phone and pulling everything back from a backup.
    • This helped and I noticed a lower battery usage.
    • Still was far from how the other phones in the house behaved.
  • I let the phone go below 10% and do a full charge twice and I turned off some location services.

    I noticed small improvement.

  • I took the phone to the Apple store to make sure that it was not a hardware malfunction (only 1yr warranty).
    • The person at the Genius bar ran a diagnostic and everything was fine when it came to hardware.
    • He mentioned that overuse of battery sometime happens when upgrading from an older phone and suggested that I did a clean restore and set up the phone as new.
    • He also recommended not to restore from back up and not to worry since I would able to get most of the information back individually. The onlything missing will be old txt messages, call history and user preferences and app data.
  • Final solution: Restored and set up the phone as new.
    • Restored my contacts and photos from iCloud.
    • Restored my apps, notes, music ring tones from iTunes.

Finally my phone is behaving and using battery like the other phones in the house and closer to Apple's Battery usage specification.

Alright I'm getting a little worried here.

I charged my phone to 100% and took it off the charge just before going to bed. So I wake up in the morning 8 hours later only to be shocked, I had only 49% battery remaining! I checked the usage details and here's what I saw:

Usage: 3 hours 1 minute

Standby: 8 hours 0 Minutes.

So 3 hours of unexplained usage, because clearly I wasn't using the phone, I was sleeping, and 51% battery unaccounted for.

It's very peculiar because the last 4 or so days, the battery had been fine. I could leave it overnight and loose only about 1 or 2 %, but last night was just insane! I don't get it.

This is EXACTLY what I've found as well! Phone plugged in all night... go for an hour walk with the dog while streaming tunein radio. Reads 3 1/2 hours usage and 45% battery... after 1 HOUR!

I sure hope this is a software issue they can fix, because I bought mine online and have no apple store nearby!

Also notice the phone loses cellular and wifi signals while I'm standing still. Bars slowly drop and it cannot connect to cellular network.

It's sad, because my father in law is in need of a new phone and I couldn't recommend the iPhone to him. He's coming from a Blackberry, so I recommended the galaxy s3 to him.

This is frustraing!

My iPhone 5 is still draining the battery at a rapid pace, even after restarting the phone a few times today and even trying to kill a few background apps with no positive result. So I started poking around the settings and may have found something, though i'm unsure if this is actually a normal behaviour.

Under "Privacy --> Location Services" I toggled the "Show status bar Icon" to the ON position and noticed that there was indeed an arrow in the status bar, but it wasn't going away. I waited about 30 min of the phone just sitting idle to see if it would disappear but it didn't. So I checked further into the "Location Services" menu, but didn't see anything using the location currently. I went a bit deeper by heading into the "System Services" menu (also under location services) and found that the top-most item labeled "Cell Network Search" was currently using my location, and wasn't turning off.

So this may be the culprit in my case, but I'm not entirely sure if it's normal for that to be constantly using my location. Can anybody go into those settings on your phone and see if "Cell Network Search" is constantly using your location too? And also if anybody knows if it's supposed to be behaving that way.

For now, I've turned "Cell Network Search" to the OFF position just to see if the constant usage stops, along with the constant battery drain.

Me again haha.

Just another update. I'm nearly 100% positive I know what my issue is, low memory.

I tried everything (as I've posted above) and nothing worked, but like I mentioned, under Diagnostics and Usage I had a few LowMemory entries and decided to try manually force quitting all my apps (double clicking the home button, holding down on an app, then clicking the X) and let the phone be for about 35 minutes. The result is that there was 0% battery lost and the usage time didn't budge by even 1 minute.

So that's what's happening in my case, though I can't figure out if it's either:
A) Bad memory in the phone

B) Too many apps open (I assume that shouldn't be an issue since the phone should manage that automatically)

C) One or more apps I had open that were not properly updated for use on iOS6 and/or the iPhone 5

I just find it strange that restarting the phone doesn't seem to fix the problem but force quitting the apps does...

What do you guys think?

Tried everything on here to extend the battery life on my iPhone 5. Deleting my icloud account did the trick. It's not enough to just disable each individual app, you have to delete it from the phone. Everything still stays in the cloud, so you can still re-enable it after Apple updates the software to fix the glitch.

This also fixed the issue of my iPhone chewing up data constantly, while seeming to be in standby.

Good Luck all!
