When taking a picture, within about 18 inches from the iPhone 5, the flash will go on, but when the picture is taken it is either before the second flash or after. I this that way for any other iPhone 5 user? The pictures come out worse than if there is no flash, almost completely black, but when further away it seems to work just fine.

I was tempted to restore my iPhone in the event it was a software issue.
If you haven't seen my thread already, restart your iPhone by pressing both the home & power button, hold them till the apple logo shows then release.

I did not see your original. I did a hard reboot and I did not notice a real difference, I initially thought it may be iOS for iPhone 5. I have rebooted once again and it does seem better, I hope no more worries arise. Thanks.

Just by turning off and on (completely) it helps, it start taking normal flash pics.. though it comes back to taking those dark pics with flash eventually, and I have to turn it off and on. If you stumble upon the real solution, please let us know!
(though I hope we never encounter this problem again).
I just tested mine (under my duvet) and it seems to be ok (even though testing it under a duvet isn't ideal)
I wonder if anyone is having issues with their iPhone 4/4s that way we could blame the iOS 6 update and not the device.
I just tested my iPhone 4 and that seems fine?
In my case, the regular reset (holding both buttons down till the Apple icon comes back up) didn't do it for me,
but turning it off and back on did.
Hope that Apple is going to make this impossible to happen again in a new update of iOS 6.

Here we go again, i tried everything, soft, hard reset, restore ... it works a moment and then it starts again ... and I do it with 2 Iphones...
Here's how its been:
Went to the Apple Store, they did a reset with their computers and eveything, Since I didn't have my computer with me I kept it around 3 hours in a "like new" condition, but I took over 500 photos with flash and it worked. I couldn't replicate the problem. I thought eveything was finally going to work.
I got home, restored it from my past iphone (as every generation of iphone I've had) and within 30-40 minutes it started taking the dark photos again!!! I then thought: "ok, maybe it's the restore, that some files are corrupted or something". So I reset it to factory settings, and added my apps and music like a new phone, no restore.
It was working perfectly for almost a day. And suddenly half an hour ago, it started again. Oh my.... I'm on my way back to the Apple Store. Hopefully I get a replacement and the new one works fine, though I still think it may be something to do with something I get in the phone: maybe a corrupted song, or an app that creates conflict. Anything.

That's a bit rubbish.....! Besides Apple restoring the handset for you, did they say if they had seen the issue previously?
Do we know if apple are in fact aware of the issue?
I personally don't use the flash a great deal, I never did with my iPhone 4 either the images always seemed pale and washed out.

The manager did say " I have never seen this. Ever". I mention it's a problem already seen in the iPhone 4S when it first came out, btu still, he insisted in swaping my phone. In the end, 3 geniuses said the same thing: if this new phone starts doing the same thing, it may be your restore file. But since I didn't restore forma previous version the last time, they just changed my phone for a new one. I've had it for 4 hours now and i did resored it form an icloud backup and everything has been fine. Hopefully it was just a short circuit or something (since other problems appeared eventually.)
Yeah I didn't restore this iPhone 5 I installed all of the apps as if it were a new phone and let everything else sync with my iCloud.

Ok, this new phone has been working fine. But I'm still not convinced it was hardware, because my dad's phone (also bought the 21st) had been working fine and today it started taking DARK photos with flash. That's really discouraging. It kinda gave me the idea that its just software and that my phone might malfunction eventually.
I really hope not. But it would be TOO weird to have 2 phones with hardware problems in the same house.
If anyone gets an actual response that gives a clear answer about this problem please keep us informed.
