can't open or reinstall i tunes

What happens when you try to reinstall iTunes? Do you get an error message? If so, what does the error message say? (Precise text, please.)

OK, I may have a unique situation. I am on a work computer and we are using Windows XP (don't laugh). I don't have the 'Remove' option in the "Addor Remove Programs" screen for Apple components. I get a 'Click here for support' and the get an option to 'Repair', only it doesn't repair anything. I've tried downloading 3rd party software uninstallers but I get error messages that I must run them with Administrator privliges, which I don't have. Any suggestions? I have tried the iTunes intaller program several times, always 'removing' iTunes and then reinstalling it. It says it installed, but then I try to open it and get the same error message again. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Earlier iTunes (and supporting applications) need to be completely uninstalled before you can install the new version. Here's the complete Apple info on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

Mobile device application will most likely fail to uninstall, so you would need to visit its location(s) and manually delete the files then folder(s). The location of the folders is documented in this link from Apple.

I followed these steps exactly, installed QuickTime with no problem, and upon trying to install iTunes I got this message:

"Errors occurred during the installation before the requested operations for iTunes could be completed.

Your system has not been modified. To complete the installation, run the installer again."

This is driving me nuts!!!

Hi Ktrainhurricane.

I am not sure what steps you followed (you replied to someone other than me). The nuts and bolts of it is this: Control Panel uninstaller feature can't uninstall the Mobile Device Application. I'm guessing this is somehow the problem with the install. What you need to do is go to the path where it is (find it in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923) and manually delete FIRST the files in /common files/apple/mobile device application/ and THEN the folder (mobile device application) itself. If you try to delete the whole folder and files together it will give you errors. After everything is gone that is required to be gone in the apple support link, then restart your computer and install the latest version of iTunes. It worked for me, anyway. And others.

Thanks for this Flinneybee. I worked with Apple technicians for over two hours with no results. They had to go back to their engineers for more advice. I tried your method and it worked immediately. I shared it with the Apple technician in Orlando. She said if it works for other clients she will share it more widely. Great job!
