When I was buying it in an American Apple Store the salesperson said that it will work fine with European, Russian and any other sim-cards. But in practice I have problems with sending SMS (voice calls, 3G and receiving messages work perfectly). Perhaps I should change the number of SMS center? Is there any way to do it?

Agree with the "too Apple-ish" ... like nothing can go wrong in a perfect Apple world.
BTW, made some search on Sprint comunity forum about "iPhone unlocked", it's interresting to see how it's difficult to have a clear idea of their locked/unlocked policy, ridiculous, roaming data plan is big money ... maybe that's the reason ...
Anyway, selling the iPhone Sprint even to the people who can't use it was big money too for Apple stores US ! ... Our problem would take 5 mins to be fixed if we were in US retails ... "on spot, no question asked" like the Apple-ish are saying 🙂 ... Apple maybe use the fact that we are far and cannot return the device, what a shame

I agree that you probably were mis-sold your iPhone 5 by the Apple store employee telling you that the phone would work when it obviously won't because it is not unlocked. There are no officially unlocked iPhone 5's for sale in the US at present, so yes, you were given misleading information by Apple in the US for sure.
Well, Verizon representatives have proved that their iPhone 5 is sold unlocked and will never be relocked.

Apple sellers told us the same about Sprint models. So Apple has to fix the mistake.

No support from AppleCare...
It seems there a limitation from Sprint, but how contact them if we are not customer ???

he is a Sprint client with iPhone 5, asked Sprint to unlocked his phone for international use, they did it, he restored on itune but once outside USA he got the same SMS problem !
This problem concerns all Sprint iPhone users, include all Sprint clients ! ... due to Apple failure in the unlocking process !

Same issue. iPhone 5 by Sprint. All is good in Dubai except the SMS. Same answers fron apple " check with your carrier" untill yesterday when the upped their game. Extremely rude and same Appleish standard sentences about the locked unlocked crap. Pretty similar to mr. Diesel's words I saw in another discussion.
I guess apple perfection died last year.
